Now he has been sentenced by a military court in Russia to 5 1/2 years in prison. But... not for murder or theft. For spreading "fake news" when he said he did it.
Well, I guess, kind of justice of a sort? He committed a crime and will see time behind bars for it, even if through a somewhat indirect route.

Although maybe they can just pack him straight into Wagner.

And the Pentagon has released the footage of the collision itself from the drone. The Russian jet makes two passes extremely close, sprays it with fuel and then collides.

Russia, of course, just blindly insisted it never happened.
Yet Russia continues to cry about NATO "escalating" by sending tanks. Every accusation is a confession, it seems.

You want NATO escorting their spy drones with armed escorts? Because that's how you get NATO escorting their drones with armed escorts.

Don't pull that thread, Russia.

God damn, but another accidental fire in a military/security building Russia.

I swear that Russia is full of fucking death traps, it would seem. People randomly fall out of 2nd story windows, buildings and airplanes just exploding for no apparent reason.

Maybe the land is cursed? Has anyone laid eyes on Baba Yaga recently? Maybe god decided to go all OT on them for.....reasons?

Eh, best case, health and safety is run by the same people that run, well, everything else in Russia and get the same results. Plus, there's a war on and people have other things to worry about and stuff happens. Lot of work goes in to keeping things uneventful.

I didn't think it would be a Russian pilot who made Maverick from Top Gun look cautious in comparison....

Impossible. God loves Russia because Russia hates gays and trans people. Just ask Tucker Carlson.

Wow, the Russian denial really didn't last long at all this time. Sergei Shoigu is giving the pilots medals for downing the drone.

So... they went from denial to state endorsement in... under 1 day? Is there any messaging discipline at all? Did the release of the footage just make denial completely untenable?

They've always been at war with Oceania.

If the state of thier internal politics is anything like the state of thier military, then this makes total sense.

Not only does the left hand not know what the right hand is doing, they're actively trying to stab each other.

On the subject of the drone, I've read that the Russian fighter sprayed it with fuel to cause it to crash as it would be cheaper to do so than firing a missile. Make of that what you will.

Also, does that count as a confirmed kill, or do only enemy fighters add to your potential ace status?

I don't think so.

Pulling the trigger on a missile to down the drone would be an immensely provocative act of outright aggression. Dumping fuel on it is a significant step down on the severity scale as it's not immediately and obviously likely to cause destruction. More like harassment, perhaps. Similar to the way that warships might chase away, board or seize and impound vessels in contested seas, but not actually fire on and destroy them.

...

Okay, look, the book is set IN Oceania so I dunno how that quote got so fucken mangled.
Hmm, sort of makes sense. In the book, Eurasia encompasses Russia. And Goldstein's book alleges that Eastasia and Eurasia both operate ideologies that are functionally identical to that in Oceania.

So it's quite likely that the government of Eurasia engages in much the same kind of "we were always at war with X" nonsense.

...of course, it's also possible that Goldstein's book is either wrong or just another propaganda piece, and that Eurasia and Eastasia aren't anything like Oceania. We know bugger all for sure about anything outside of a small area of Britain, because information is so tightly controlled and grossly misleading.

I've just realised I could have said something clever (or at least pretentious) about how the quote being rewritten was a deliberate stylistic choice, that underplays the message.

But no, it was cause Russia is in East Asia.

This all started because I fucked up in what I was trying to say.

What I wanted to say was I have no idea how or why so many people seem to think that the Oceania mangling is what's in the book itself.
