While I don't herald it as a symbol of perfect gaming, I think everyone misunderstood Far Cry 2. When you are given a mission, most people groan at the massive distance they have to cover, knowing they will be attacked numerous times along the way.
If GTA3 had never existed, then this exact game would be MORE FUN.
The idea is the same as any other linear shooter, for that amount of time. You don't "GROAN" about how you have to go all the way through Ravenholm and City 17 to reach the Citadel and the end of the game in Half-Life 2. You don't GROAN about having to carve through a bunch of enemies in Halo. It's a part of the challenge, and pretty much the main idea of the game. You're not time-limited, and you can even tackle it however you want.
If the combat ITSELF is not fun in FC2, then that's its own problem; one I mainly agree with, and is usually remedied if you outfit yourself with unusual weapons like the RPG, flare gun, and dart rifle.
