I guess a more underrated band is Beach House I rarely hear anyone talk about them even on music forums and when they do the topic only gets a few responses. They just make some achingly beautiful dream-pop that I believe everyone should check out.
No doubt. Teen Dream is easily one of the best albums of the year so far. Most people I know still don't listen to them even after several shout-outs on Pitchfork's best new music list (the only part of that site worth checking out). I've heard they're popular in some places though.

Death - Ok, some metalheads may know Death, but it's shocking how many people don't. They literally invented Death Metal, and there's so many Death-Metallers who have never heard of them.

There's a lot more I can list, but I'll leave there.
Thats probably the melodic *death* metallers.
...What?
Well, by melodic death metallars, i mean people who only know stuff like in flames/dark tranquillity.

Those same people often do not know the roots of the genre, and therefore have never heard of Death, but otherwise i think everyone who is into death metal, should have heard of Death.
Oh. I'm mostly MeloDeath-based though. Although I don't really like In Flames or Dark Tranquility.

It seems you've attracted one of the 'anti-mainstream, obscure music loving' fans as alluded to by Onyx Oblivion.
A majority of my musical library consists of the obscure and criminally underrated, but I'll do my best to single out the MOST underrated of these:

Morphine - http://www.last.fm/music/Morphine
A blend of jazz/blues/rock with charismatic, witty vocals. It's just plain cool music. (They're no longer making music anymore, unfortunately)

Psapp - http://www.last.fm/music/Psapp
A very innovative band straying from conventional instruments and using electronic equipment and toys to produce their sound.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - http://www.last.fm/music/Nick+Cave+and+the+Bad+Seeds
In my opinion, Australia's best lyricist! No more need be said!

Rest assured there are many more I could say...but I won't plague this thread with any more :)

ALSO, I have to mention quickly the greatest, most innovative beautiful, clever, odd and absolutely unreal artist in the world: BJORK! She is well know, yes, but is not given the respect she deserves. Seriously, she is a genius. have a listen to the album 'Medulla,' that's some convention breaking there! I hold her musical expertise up there among the likes of Frank Zappa etc.

Second, Reel Big Fish. They are probably one of the most fun and talented ska bands there is, but most people don't even know what ska is. In my opinion, the entire ska genre itself is underrated.
Winner. They're pretty diverse too. Listen to Sell Out, Cheer Up, then Average Man. All pretty different styles.

I'd say Queens of the Stone Age. Songs for the Deaf is one of the greatest albums of all time, but for some reason the only praise I ever see them get is from critics. Outside of critics, I never see them on any "Top 10" lists or anything.

Ludo. They are an absolutely amazing band filled with catchy tunes and lyrical genius, and yet they're so under the radar. They deserve way more attention.
Tokyo Jihen has to be my favorite foreign band ever, but they too are extremely little-known. Their music is out of this world.
The Dresden Dolls are very under-rated, but have somewhat of a cult following. There is rarely any news regarding them, I think the only tidbit I heard was in regards to the lead singer, Amanda Palmer.

Sevendust. They've been around forever, and they put on a brilliant live show. They produce solid songs and albums, but no one seems to be a fan of them.

Green Day.
Whaaaaat!? What did you think I'd say? I mean, honestly, a lot of people really hate them, and think they sold out with the American Idiot album.
They didn't sell out. I've had this argument with so many people. They're a punk/pop-punk band and they made a punk album about the government. How is that selling out?!
Btw I'm supporting you, in case it sounds like I'm arguming with you
Their new album is awful though

My vote goes to Blacklist Royals. If anyone has listened to The Gaslight Anthem, Blacklist are similar but more punky
And if nobodys heard of The Gaslight Anthem then my vote goes to them instead

i don't know exactly how popular he is (I've never met someone that listens to him), but i say Ben Folds. he is an amazing piano player that plays some amazing songs. it isn't like classical piano, it is the awesome variety of piano. his band, Ben folds five, broke up quite a while ago, so he has been solo since. both pre-breakup and post-breakup, his music has been amazing

caution, some naughty words
no more naughty words (as far as i know)

That's not really a good thing, you know? you should hope that bands that you like get exposure, not disband unheard of.

EXTREME.

best guitarist in the world (Nuno Bettencourt) and i think there better than Van Halen...however, people only know them for one soppy ballad that only consisted of 2/4 members. it's wrong that no-one knows of them.

Blue Stalhi. They're somewhat akin to Celldweller. They don't seem very well known to me, but I adore them. Here, have a listen, maybe I can convert you.

I don't think I've posted in one of these list threads for underated bands before... I've skipped over them, but since they keep cropping up I'll throw in my potentially obscure underated band who I think not many people know but who in fact have probably been heard of by loads of people otherwise they wouldn't have found a label and made several albums.

The group is called Failure, they're not around anymore, it's a mid 90's grunge band loosely related to A Perfect Circle and Queen's of the Stoneage... in fact, A Perfect Circle used one of their songs.

Poets of The Fall at least I think they're under rated. They did most of the music in Alan Wake, The Poet and the Muse etc.

"the blood brothers."

In the metalcore genre it's hard to stand out and "the blood brothers" did.

"Cake"

it's a band well known. But i think they should be legendary. Like rolling stones big

"AFI"

everybody thinks they suck but their earlier mid stuff is tottaly awsome. Especially "
sing the sorrow"

"boys night out"

the only reason i have them in this list is because of their concept album masterpiece "Trainwreck" You owe it to yourself to listen to that album

NOOOOOOOOOO! You've attracted the annoying anti-mainstream people who are only going to list extremely obscure bands! Instead of bands you've heard of, that are still under-rated.

OT: Stone Temple Pilots is always over-shadowed by Pearl Jam (my favorite band) and Nirvana.
Haha, agreed.

Been listening to STP a bit lately, they're awesome.

Aside from that I reckon Deftones.
