If you want to avoid chavs, you might want to forget about anything in London... unless it's part of UoL [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_London], I guess, their standards should probably keep out all but the best students.

Newcastle and Cardiff seemed really nice when I visited, and I've heard from friends that Portsmouth and Chester are great.
UoL includes Royal Holloway, also known at University of Stains lol. Everywhere has chavs, Newcastle and Cardiff are probably worse than London for chavs because London has much more diversity. Just a thought.

So, to any and all of you who have studied, or are studying, at a university in the UK I ask you: can you recommend any good unis? Or warn me of any bad ones? The towns or cities they're situated in are also a massive factor. Little or no chavs if possible!
What type of uni do you want? a rural one? one with a good night life? Also an idea of the grades your looking at would help.
Also about the chavs: If they are chavs attending university, don't expect them to be similar to the garden variety chavs you see drinking cider in the park. they are atleast making an effort, they cant be that bad.

Im going De Montford Leicester to study psychology this year, starting in september, and im really looking forward to it.
I was thinking one in a town or city. Nightlife has never been much of a bother for me, I'm not the clubbing type. I didn't mean chavs at the actual uni, because I know the chavs who aren't complete de-evolutions of people are nice people.

I'm going to Kent at the end of September, shouldn't run into too many chavs in Canterbury.
Just a note:

If you decide to slip past the inadequate gate in the tower to have sex on the roof of that old castle ruin there, bear in mind that someone comes round and locks the main gate at ground level around sunset, and it's not easy to get past even if you're skinny, strong and flexible.

82,000 results.

Only 4 results for York.

None for Stirling.

40,000 for Bristol.

3 for Exeter.

If you do go there, be sure to get sorting out your second-year housing early, like before Christmas. You want to be out of town and not in a mass-produced concrete box with rotted window frames and malfunctioning appliances.

I just finished my first year of university and I loved it, you should be looking forward to it. I'm not in the UK (University College Cork in Ireland) so I can't offer you much help choosing one (it is a fine university if you do fancy a trip across the water though). I guess we're lucky in a way in Ireland, we only have seven universities so it's not that hard to pick one.

I can give some advice that is probably universal. The big thing I would say is keep on top of everything you're meant to be doing, you're probably meant to be signing up for tutorials and doing projects and so on and nobody will make you, you're lucky if you even get told you're meant to do it. It sounds obvious but it is a culture shock coming from school to find that you have to motivate yourself to do everything instead of putting it on the long finger because now nobody gives a shit whether you actually do it or not.

The other thing that comes to mind is forget everything you learned at school. Ok, don't forget everything you learned, but forget how you learned it. At school it's all about rote learning and training you for exams. In college you're going to need to actually learn and understand things for their own sake without reference to how it's going to appear on your exam. Again, sounds obvious but it is different from school and it's something that catches a lot of people out.

Huh, I don't want to go to Uni, but school seem to be forcing me.
I don't really see point in spending another 2/3 years of getting just passes to end up having a shit boring job.
I was thinking about doing performing arts, or doing a double hons and do English too.

Thanks, I'm not quite adventurous enough to try that myself, but I'll warn anyone I see thinking about it. Or more likely, tell them it's a great idea...

I know exactly what you mean. Seems to be drummed into students as the best choice possible.

I've just graduated from Liverpool University (not John Moores!) and I did Communications, Media & Popular music. If you wanted to do something involving journalism, it may not be a good idea to actually do a whole university course on it because then you've boxed yourself into doing one thing and you'll have no other options should you discover that you don't want to be a journalist.

Great atmosphere at the uni though, I probably should have taken advantage of it more than I did :-(

Howdy y'all. I'm doing a bit of late night research into universities, for I'm hoping to study Journalism at university in the next couple of years. It's only just occured to me I have a whole community to call upon for their experiences.

So, to any and all of you who have studied, or are studying, at a university in the UK I ask you: can you recommend any good unis? Or warn me of any bad ones? The towns or cities they're situated in are also a massive factor. Little or no chavs if possible!
COME TO STAFFORD :)

That is all.

Well in that case i suggest that you don't go to places like Manchester, Birmingham, Newcastle, liverpool. Might be a bit of a stereotype that they are mainly in the north, but they do have a lot of chavs. as does a lot of areas of London.
Easiest way to do it, is find the best uni's you can get into with your (predicted)grades, then do some research. plus i deffinitely advise going to open days, if you can.

I did History at Lancaster, top stuff. Some very well-respected profs in the department, and I hear that it's also very good for Physics. Oh, and the nine bars on campus had no bearing on my decision to go there, whatsoever.

I'm going to go to Stafford. Join me, I want a fellow Escapist there.
Great uni, nice people, free megafast broadband, slightly dull town though, but whatever. Only complaint I've heard is from absolute nerds who say there's "No girls". Ha, priorities.

I've been told (by the owner of a newspaper, who I saw for advise) that a journalist degree is not worth that much if your really looking into a career as a journalist as they value experience above qualifications, so your time could be better spent getting work experience with a newspaper or news broadcasting station. That's why I'm going to be taking an English Literature degree as it's flexible and means I could pursue any number of jobs.

Though thats just what I've been told and its your choice but just something to factor in. As for universities, Kent Christ uni and Canterbury both look like very nice places from what I've seen.
