University Threatens Criminal Charges Over Firefly Poster

As much as I love Firefly and freedom of speech, he works at the University of Wisconsin and is paid by them and [I assume] is putting the picture on university property; therefore, he has to abide by their rules. It is unreasonable and stupid to threaten this guy with criminal action for his humorous posters, but the university administrators still have the right to decide what their employees do while on the job.

Police chief Lisa.... get a life?
Or at least stop putting your foot down to increase your sense of self worth, which you appearantly need to get from acting out fake authority.

What a pack of sad, pathetic fools with nothing better to do with their time than niggle at every single little thing.
Jesus, why not install an Independent Thought Alarm while they're at it!!

One of my lecturers used to have a Jolly Roger on his door with something along the lines of 'There comes a time when every man must hoist the black flag, don a cutlass and start cutting throats!'

We loved it, the staff thought it was funny and nobody had a case of the 'Concerned Mothers' Brigade' over it.
As far as I know, it's still there, grinning at all who pass by.

Another lecturer has a sign with Sinatra on it saying 'It's Frank's world, we just live in it'.
To my knowledge, the theoretical physics department has never lodged an informal challenge to his assertion.

EDIT:

Nor has the International Relations dept.

There was wasn't mentioning that University of Wisconsin was the site of the Army Math Research Center Bombing and they do take things a little more serious there.

And to think that I thought universities were for smart people...

Honestly, "People MIGHT interpret it as a threat!"
Some people interpret "Do you need anything?" as sexual assault. There's a fine line between Paranoia and being Cautious.

The next time I see one of these, I'll start my doomsday device that censors EVERYTHING for an entire day. Maybe then people will see that it's a stupid concept.

What would happen if the second poster was a picture of Hitler and/or a giant swastika with the caption "Don't let it happen here"?

My god, I hate the stupidity that police officers live by. Only a fucking moron would feel threatened by this. Maybe they should use their weapons...on themselves.

Well ofcourse the posters had to be taken down. We need to do anything in our power to shelter our poor innocent UNIVERSITY students. I mean, they're so fragile at that age!

The second poster being what it was made me laugh.

I don't care too much about the outcome of this, its a fairly stupid situation on the whole. Guess I hope it gets resolved without too many issues.

But that part just really amused me.

Okay, maybe I could see where they were coming from if this was at, say, a middle school. I'd still think it was overreacting, but they'd be within their rights.

But this is a goddamned university! We are adults! We can deal with something that "mentions violence and death."

Ridiculous.

Now I can somewhat understand the first one. I, personally, would have found it funny but I can see it being offensive or threatening to people who have no knowledge of Firefly/no sense of humor.

The second one is just the University QQing about being insulted.

I think somebody in that university is feeling very sensitive. At what junction did all this seem like a good idea?

Why did everyone at the university pussy-foot around the real issue? They couldn't just say that the poster made them feel uncomfortable? That it might have others think about the various campus incidents that have occurred in the US over the past few years? I'm not sure this threat assessment team understands what it's actual job is. I was under the impression it was to assess actual potential threats, like, I don't know, making sure we don't have weapons, or harmful illicit materials in our schools, colleges, universities?

Everyone involved seems so childish trying to cover their asses so they can't be blamed if someone misinterprets the firefly poster and decides the professor wants a shoot out at the OK Corral.

Also, I can't say the professor was in the right either, pretty much flaunting his disapproval at the establishment with a second poster. He's a professor at a university, he should at the very least have been more professional and voiced his concerns to FIRE prior to antagonizing the place that pays him money.

You can insult me. You can insult my country. Hell, you can insult my family. But, when you insult the Captain... you've just stepped over the line, buddy.

On a lighter note, what in the hell is a "threat assessment team" and why would any university need one?
Kind of like, why would a university need a "rights and responsibilities" office? Shouldn't those 2 be kept separate? Or a "free speech" area (that can only be used with University leadership approval)?

That'd be the University of North Tejas, for anyone who wonders :p

Edit: Kept separate, not secret. My fingers are betraying me today.

If that's a threat then I'm Mary Queen of Scotts...

Anyway, it's just a tv show...an awesome and amazing tv show that had roots in steampunk (Sweet) but still a tv show...that's a character quote...

How much would you all bet they ignored several bomb threats just to screw with that one teacher?

"Colleges and universities are supposed to foster brave and bold environments of freewheeling intellectual inquiry and expression."
They do! As long as it's the freewheeling intellectual inquiry and expression that the university WANTS to hear.

Like a lot of places, universities allow complete freedom* (* within rigidly defined boundaries).
