I actually had to reread the article twice because I find it impossible to believe that a mere mention of death is enough to get a poster taken down in a university. If this were a preschool or elementary school, the professor would be in the wrong, but it is utterly laughable that university students would be so utterly shocked at a quote that contains the mention of death that it they couldn't focus on their work for fear that the scary man from the poster might jump out and shoot them.
Bambi and the Lion King aren't appropriate for children under 12 anymore? Because last I checked, they both had violence and death in them.

For once I don't think the American authorities are being too unreasonable. That poster could be conceived as a threat, and with the US' idiotic gun laws, quite a real one.
Interesting.. what is it about our "idiotic" gun laws that makes this ok?
The fact that virtually any citizen over the age of 21 can easily access a fire arm, and by extension anyone who can't easily own one can easily steal one, especially from say student housing. Why do you think America has such a ridiculously high gun crime rate? (It's 5th highest in the world in terms of death by fire arm, that's not including any armed robberies or assaults).
Just because an abnormal number of people OWN firearms doesn't mean they carry them. It's generally illegal to carry a concealed weapon, and you generally get put in jail anyways for carrying it openly. If anyone actually read the damn quote they'd notice the part where they would also be armed, which no one is on campus these days.

This is quite simple.

1) Police "Chief" presses charges on Prof.
2) Prof goes to court.
3) Judge says GTFO because First Amendment.
4) Police "Chief" charged with wasting the court's time with frivolous, unfounded cases.

5) Profit?

6) Some psycho shoots up the school while the threat assessment team is busy assessing the threat of, I dunno, some bees or something.

You can insult me. You can insult my country. Hell, you can insult my family. But, when you insult the Captain... you've just stepped over the line, buddy.

On a lighter note, what in the hell is a "threat assessment team" and why would any university need one?
Sounds like something the Bush administration cooked up, doesn't it?

On a completely sarcastic note, I'm so glad to see that our constitutional freedom of speech is being censored again.

That is nice "AH HA" statistic you state there. But that is not an indicator of anything. We do have the third largest population on the planet. And law abiding legally armed citizens don't go around shooting people. We actually have some very strict gun laws preventing illegal ownership of firearms. But, as you said, people can still get them if they are inclined to look hard enough. If you look at statistics from your own country (whichever one it is), you will find that people who illegally own firearms are the culprit to gun crimes in your country as well. So, it doesn't make sense to punish law abiding citizens by taking away their right to defend their homes and families. If you look at the city of Chicago, where they completely banned gun ownership, violent gun crimes increased. Why? Because the law abiding citizens were no longer allowed to defend themselves, and the criminal element could do as they pleased. In New Orleans, the police disarmed law abiding citizens, leaving them at the mercy of the criminal elements during the aftermath of Katrina.

Gun ownership is not and of itself a bad thing like people like to believe it is. And it's not really common for people in America to be shot, contrary to popular belief. That is why it makes the news when it happens, just like that fella in Oslo. Rare enough that it's big news. You don't here about ethnic cleansing on Africa so much, lots more people get shot and killed any of it's 61 territories.

Also, America is nowhere near the top of the list when it comes to overall intentional homicides per 100k people. Guns aren't the culprit of violence, violent people are.

...This is just absurd. Seriously; you can get away with that easily in a fucking secondary school here. Let alone College or Uni. Christ, it's a silly thing when posters must be taken down for fear of inciting murder or fear.

I'm a huge fan of Firefly, but this teacher is so shǎ guā.

Put it on your 'my face space book', not on your office door.
He's a drama professor, right? It's an odd choice of quote, sure, but I feel like it's at least as justifiable as the things the physics, math, and CS professors put on their doors when I where I went to school. Usually, they were cartoons of one sort or another related to the field, but sometimes they also included things like a fake movie poster for "Gulf War II".

With this thread, I finally watched the first episode of Firefly because I keep HEARING ABOUT IT!

Okay, so I'm glad I did and I'll watch the rest of the season finale throughout the next two weeks.

Way to promote thinking in young people, university pissants. Stifle any and all sources of creativity or interest you find even the slightest bit offensive, woo-hoo!

Assbags... *groans* It's a frigging poster in the Theatre Class, for fuck's sake. What is this the university of, cowardice? Backwards Mentality Tech? Oo- I know, Pussy-U, right? Damn, but that is just pathetic.

Honestly, I'm not surprised. As unfortunate as the situation is, many universities have speech codes (ostensibly to preserve a 'welcoming' and 'tolerant' atmosphere) that are occasionally used to supress viewpoints that are unpopular or politically incorrect. As orwellian as that sounds, these attempts are usually clumsy and seldom survive legal challenge.

Most schools prohibit possession of firearms on campus, either in dorms or in vehicles. America has a high gun crime rate than other places because we have higher crime rate in general. Additional gun restrictions won't solve that; several states and municipalities have tried. Most of them subsequently exhibited worse crime rates than the country in general.
