If we're talking just bad main characters the the girl from X-Blades is surely one of them.
As for characters that don't stand up well when comparing them to the rest of the cast, Chrono from Chrono Trigger would be on that list. I liked every other character on Chrono's team more than Chrono himself. He's not a bad character, he's just not much of one being all silent and what not.

Not a game, but Shinji Ikari from Neon Genesis Evangelion is such a whiny bastard. But then again, Eva is pretty much just Mental Instability; The Anime, so it's inevitable that a lot of the characters are dicks.
Kratos: The guy has absolutely no redeeming traits and isn't even tragic from GOW2 onwards. Both he and his games dove head long into boring, monotonous, hyperviolence for the sake of hyperviolence and I could not care less about the plight of a guy willing to literally end the world because he got a raw deal. Also, the fuck is up with the ending of GOW3? Kratos has the power of hope? What is he, a lost planeteer? Ma-ti's cousin? Fuck off.
Every main character in Dead Island, except the Asian lady: Oh god, I sure do love choosing between a *****, a douche bag and a non-character. Purna is nothing but whiny, annoying and patronizing, The football player is just a cocknozzle through and through, and the rapper guy has no personality, other then a southern accent and comparing everything to Hurricane Katrina. N'ORLENS! Least the asian lady, though pretty lacking in character, seems to be genuinely trying to help.
Geralt from The witcher: EMOTE, GOD DAMN IT, EMOTE! Did this guy just have a very specific kind of stroke that stops him from displaying any sort of interest in anything? The entire game, regardless of situation, he maintains an even, disinterested tone and a flat, unfeeling face. Why the hell should I care about this guy when he doesn't even seem to care. You just killed a dragon and slept with a lady, smile you son of a *****.
Shepard from mass effect: Ironic, I know, considering the player decides his actions, but it's the choices he gives us that bugs me. Why the hell does Shepard only have two real settings: Violent, immoral bad cop, and whinging, useless good cop. And why can't I chose to take a "good" option if I haven't been being good for a long time before hand? Does he have to charge his morals before using them? You'd think he'd have some flexibility what with the fact that they had to replace his spine with a rubber hose during ME2; the universe saving cyborg fuck.

Alex Mercer is a villain protagonist, so he's partially forgiven. At least he was written pretty well, for what he is.

I found the Arbiter from Halo 2 actually interesting as a character, especially compared to the robot-like Master Chief who doesn't really have anything to like character-wise.

I honestly really liked Marcus Fenix; I think saying he's emotionless is a really unfair criticism after Gears 3. Well, as you can recall, Shepard DIES at the beginning of the game. Cerberus spends a fortune to bring him back. Shepard kind of owes Cerberus now, even if he wanted to leave, the Illusive Man is the only reason he's alive at that point. And if Shepard tried to just walk away, the Illusive Man would probably try to have him killed
The Collectors are blowing through human colonies, and the Alliance and the Council are doing nothing about it. The Illusive Man gives Shepard a new ship, options for a new crew, and the information he needs to stop the Collectors, well, Shepard has to make the best out of a bad situation.

Lightning from Final Fantasy 13. The funny thing is she would be likable, if Squeenix would just acknoledge she'd be better as a supporting character. They announced they would be giving her a happy ending in 13-2. Whilst Vanille and Fang, two characters who are actually likable, are trapped in Hell for eternity. Also, Noelle Kriess from 13-2. Not even out yet, and I already want to strangle him.

Eddie Rigg from Brutal Legend. Driving your girlfriend to suicide and making your roadie cry isn't funny, it's just cruel.
Kane & Lynch. Despite how much I like the game, I will say that I hated them. Lynch is a sadistic unfeeling bastard (And can't even do it right. Rubi from WET is a good example of a sadistic unfeeling character.) And Kane is just bland.

I guess I just don't see it that way. Lara Croft isn't exactly a soldier, but even letting that go for a moment Nathan Drake is a guy who looks for treasure, gets shot at, and then shoots back at the people trying to kill him. I don't see this as an amoral act on his part, whether he's a soldier or no. Certainly no less moral than the actions of Number 47 who, despite actually BEING a mass murderer, doesn't seem to bother anybody.MrDeckard said:
