Update: Mega Man Creator Kickstarts Mighty No. 9

"Mighty No. 9 is an all-new Japanese side-scrolling action game that takes the best aspects of the 8- and 16-bit era classics you know and love, and transforms them with modern tech, fresh mechanics, and fan input into something fresh and amazing!"
The project is being spearheaded by Inafune himself, who is bringing on an all-star team to help him out, including the level designer from the original Mega Man: Naoya Tomita, Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Darkstalkers 3 character designer Kimo Kimo, original Mega Man composer Manami Matsumae, and Mega Man Legends art director Shinsuke Komaki.

It's an impressive lineup of developers, and the Kickstarter page's [http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/mightyno9/mighty-no-9?ref=recently_launched] description of the game promises a true Mega Man-style experience for fans of the blue bomber. "Run, jump, blast, and transform your way through six stages (or more, via stretch goals) you can tackle in any order you choose, using weapons and abilities stolen from your enemies."
Mighty No. 9 is being developed for the PC with gamepad support, and will be made available through Steam and DRM-free digital distribution methods. Other platforms are a possibility, but only if certain stretch goals are hit.

Update: Mighty No. 9 has hit its funding goal of $900,000 in just under four days. Its first stretch goal is at $1,200,000, which promises to add two extra stages to the game if reached. As of writing, the Kickstarter is sitting at $1,073,510.
Update #2: The first stretch goal: 2 extra stages at $1.2 million, has been reached! The Kickstarter shows no signs of slowing down so stay tuned for more updates.
Update #3: The second stretch goal, at $1.35 million, has been reached, promising Mac and Linux versions of the game when it's released through Steam.
Update #4: Mighty No. 9 has smashed through stretch goals three and four, adding new game plus, turbo mode, and a making-of documentary. The next stretch goal, at $2.2 million, is the one everyone is waiting for: PS3, 360 and Wii U versions of the game. As of writing we're sitting at $1,837,378, meaning there's just $400,000 to go!
