The kid did cheat.

The kid DID cheat.

Did I mention that the kid did, in fact, cheat? Because he did.

You can all stop with your "Well, if he did cheat, then" statements now. Please?
Yeah, and people will stop saying "This is news? My God, if this is news then blahblahblah [not so clever pun here] blahalh."

Not happening buddy. : /
What does Microsoft have to gain from picking on an Autistic kid? He obviously cheated, it's the only explanation that makes any sense.
Well, he cheated...and consequences come along with that, whether or not hes autistic. Just because your autistic doesn't mean you get a free card for stuff like this. Microsoft doesn't gain anything out of it, but nor should they take some "special consideration" into this just because he is autistic. Thats just silly.
Are you quoting to agree with me or debate with me? Because I agree with everything you said.
You agree? Oh, cool. haha I just took the "What does MS have to gain" question as a "Why are they picking on him?"

I'm glad we're on the same page though. =)
Oh, alright, yeah I was just saying they have nothing to gain from it, as a way of saying there is no way he didn't cheat.
Makes more sense now! haha Although it would've been more entertaining to debate this...
I could say something crazy for us to argue over if you want?

I think that's wrong to stick cheater by their name. I don't think he cheated. Autistic children/adults are unbelievably smart & talented. Sure they have difficulty talking & making eye contact with others, but that's why his one release was his Xbox Live. He didn't have to converse with people directly. His mom wouldn't have anything to do with it, and neither would him. Just because Microsoft says he cheated doesn't mean he did. They just want to complain about how someone who can beat their games without cheat codes is bad for business.

I am sticking up for the little guy because SOMEONE has to!! I know what it's like to have a medical disability & be treated like dirt.
Not all of them are, just some.

Trying to use autism as a shield against criticisms is a despicable thing. It shows that their disabilities leads to soft-hearted reactions and leads to them being weak. Treat them the same as any other child and you show them they can get past it.

Also, I have to say I am proud of the Escapist community, at least most of the posters on the first page. You have shown that you all are turning into logical cynics like me, and I am so proud.

Wonder how many 'OMG M$ are evil' there are pre-'confirmation of cheating'.

If the kids a true autistic hed simply restart under a different name ( because social inclusion would be irrelevant) and redo the acheivements.

why do people care so much for achievements?
Why does the developmentally disabled, mentally deficient child have a predilection for irrational thought?

Is that seriously your question here?

Why does the person who doesn't have a normal mind act like you think someone with a normal mind should act?

They ban players for cheating but it's not possible to ban people for swearing at others with headsets over Live/PSN -which actually has a tangible effect on human feelings? Seems like the easy option for MicroSoft to me.

Unfortunately, he also said that "the only person who gets the proof is the mom," so we won't be able to figure out exactly why the kid was banned unless the mother shares the information with us.
Good on them. Sounds like they've done more than due diligence and have neatly put the ball in the mom's court without violating anyone's privacy. Now she can either divulge what they found or stay silent and effectively admit the kid's guilt.

Why is this even a news story?

Someone got banned for cheating, it makes them sad but it might be a mistake. Oh no!
It's a news story because this made national [or local, I'm not sure] news, and it's to do with video-games.

which means your opinion is biased. : p also how is people beating games without cheats bad for their company? also just banning random people would not serve the company anything.. xD autism does not hinder your ability to cheat and lie in any way. would you stick up for a 11 year old without an disability that got banned after moding his achievements? kinda doubt that..

Are achievements really such a big thing for microsoft? I can understand that there are a bunch of losers out there who devote their life to playing every crappy game to get 50 more points, but microsoft? what should they care if their imaginary trophies get awarded to players who cheat?

Great way to find out if he was cheating or not.
1. Get him a decent PC and a copy of Minecraft.
2. Set the goal to be "Normal Survival, 1 month, build a working processor with red stone without editing one's inventory.
3. ???
4. Profit.

I doubt he was cheating. Having a type of autism myself, I know that autistics kids find it hard to make a convincing lie.
Him being autistic doesn't mean he couldn't do it. I knew an autistic kid who was a total asshole. He always bragged about his hacking "skills". People always seem to under-estimate autistics, and let their pity blind them to the fact that they're people too, and just as likely to be jerks and saints like the rest of us.

Good for Microsoft for not caving to potential bad PR. Everyone needs to earn their gamerscore.
Thank God people like you know how it is. My Aunt is autistic and a fat ass ***** of one too.Im tired of people who don't understand and let the lieing sneeky ones do what they want. My aunt alone has gotten 5 people fired and understands how to manipulate the law to get what she wants. What a *****

an autistic child can't lie
I don't know where you heard or read that, but you may want to look at a few sources for more information. While it is true that autists generally have a less developed imagination and therefore have a harder time thinking up lies, they also tend to be egocentric to an extreme (which also has to do with their difficulty grasping emotions in others, but I digress). This means, that especially if confronted with a large change on one of their focuses (foci? seriously, what's the plural there?), they may get emotionally stressed, depressed or angry, and can respond with untruth just as much as anyone else.

As for my own thoughts and opinions on this. The kid cheated. He rightfully got punished -exactly- the same as anyone else would. His mother in my eyes only makes the case worse by throwing this to the media. We've got nothing but her word for the fact that he actually is autistic (which, from the video Fox has at their site, I'm not convinced of. Although there are many degrees of autism, most autistic kids would balk at having a stranger point a camera at them. Also, the filth on his xbox controller and around the house makes me think this is just another case of Bad Parenting(TM)). Microsoft had no way to determine whether the kid was autistic or underage or not, and did what they should. The mother has the evidence, as Microsoft said, and the fact that she's claiming innocence or ignorance pushes me towards believing that she's just enabling her kid's wrong-doings, rather than trying to be a good parent.

For one, gamerscore doesn't define how well a player you are since it only takes a wee bit of effort to earn an achievement. They are just fun to grab, but if one cheats to obtain it than I wonder just why.

On the other hand, I have gone into class with people of Autism, Aspergers and other mental challenging syndromes. For 3 years time in middle-school.
And know this; Do NOT pity them. Ban him if he violated the terms of agreement to show your power if you must. I myself couldn't care less.

the only reason this is being reported is cause the kid is autistic. im sure there is someone out there who has been cheated out of more than that for less. and again theyre only achievements, they should post more about how exactly this affected him. is he suicidal now or something? then i might feel for him, but if its just because his achievements that hes worked so hard for are gone...
