11 year old? Yeah, wouldn't surprise me one bit if he was cheating. Back at that age I used to cheat a lot, and I know other people that did the same. One guy even said it wouldn't download a demo of a game because he couldn't find a god mode cheat for it...

There going to take some flak for this so they better have good evidence. Putting indisputable evidence down of cheating still isn't going to help of the shit storm cause the kid is autistic but at least it will minimize the backlash.

I personlay hate achievements/trophies as they give nothing rewarding really
ok, wait,

first you state that the kid should have never bein taken from his "single player" achievements no matter what

and then you state that you hate achievements/trophies and they do more harm than good

then what do you think the people that DO care about such things would think?? that its "OK" to cheat for something they worked hard to get?

its an awfull double standard you are putting up there pal, does him being autistic puts him in a higher place where he doesnt have to follow the rules everyone else does?? i dont think so

MS wants his customers happy, if you dont care about achievements then good for you!!, but there are people who actually DO care about gamerscore, and they work really hard, for days on end to get them, then why does some kid, regardless of "illness" or whatever should be allowed to cheat his way up in the score the others worked so hard to get??

what would you think if you were playing... i dont know, BASEBALL for all your life, and a guy comes and beats you in every single way, and then you discover he was using steroids???

my guess?? you would be pissed, you would yell UNFAIR! and go to the autorities to sort things out

same concept

Sometimes you have to take a step back and ask: Why is this a story worthy of coverage from a news station? A game site, sure; but a broadcast affiliate in a major city? Really?
Thank you, I thought the same thing after reading this. My only thought is that it might have been a slow (maybe very slow) news day.

This isn't the first time MS has done this. They banned consoles for being modded when there was nothing modded about them when they had their little "modded console purge"

But here we don't know all the facts, still MS's track record isn't that great.

now it's easy to get all up in arms about how evil Microsoft is or how arbitrary Achievements are but really?

until we get the whole picture, we're just assuming. and when we assume, we're just making an ass out of u and me

The issue I have here is that there have been plenty of rare use cases where users would be randomly awarded achievements they haven't earned, across all three major systems (Steam, PSN, and XBL)
ok... you lost me at "Plenty of rare use cases"

i dont really see how "plenty" can be used with "rare", either there are "plenty" or it is "rare"

and i´m sure they didnt said "OOH, He made the KILLIONAIRE achievement at the same time of PASSED LEVEL 3 in eternal darkes!? THATS IMPOSIBLE!! LETS KILL ALL HIS GAMESCORE"

why do people asume that a company whose work is to "please" its customers is just trying to find a way to screw them over?? is our faith on this corporation so easily waved by just one kid??,i mean, after all we trust them with our money to keep a clean enviroment for us to play, and that includes "hackers/cheaters/pirates"... as i see it, i am sure they actually researched some more than just "meh, he´s probably cheating" because they know of the PR nigtmare they could get if they start to blame cheaters at random.

He did mod his achievs. so he did cheat, microsoft have the right to do what they did.

I confirmed that achievements were illegitimately modified on the account and contacted the customer directly w/ specifics.

from stephen toulouse's twitter.

It's sick that this boy's mom uses autism in an attempt to blow such a minuscule problem like game achievements way out of proportion. If she acts like this regularly he's probably going to grow up believing every problem he has in life is due to his autism and it will dominate his life. Sad.

Awww, he's autistic, is he? Ahw, that's swell....
My mate has a broken arm and lost both his legs in a car accident. If he cheats, I'm fairly certain he'd get the exact same treatment from Microsoft.

Jeez, he's autistic. No offense but he COULD be lying and might have been obsessed with achievements and actually did do something bad, or maybe he didn't. And it's not Microsofts fault he was an autistic kid, the system is what it is.

EDIT: To clarify I mean just because he's autistic doesn't make a difference and he might have done something wrong cause he is a child and he is autistic and a lot of autistic people have different behavior patterns.
Also parents tend to be verry protective of their kids, especially when they have something like autism. They are also fully capable of lying, imagine if some random other kid got banned for the exact same reason, and then he says he got banned for no reason, would you believe this person? Also no one would care if a random kid got banned.

If he was cheating, I don't particularly care if he's a child or autistic. It's unfortunate Microsoft hasn't been more forthcoming with information. Are they worried that revealing how they determine someone has cheated might facilitate other cheaters avoiding detection?
pretty much this yes. if they were to explain how he cheated there would be a shit ton of people doing it suddenly.. not that it's hard to find out how to do things like that on the internet anyways. : p they have only said he had moded his achievements.

The kid shouldn't have cheated. They wouldn't remove it without solid evidence that some sort of cheating happened.

If these kid did cheat than I don't care he has no limbs and can only say bleep bloop he deserves the cheater on his tag. But Microsoft should aways check twice just in case.
Exactly, if it was any other kid people would just be like 'You shouldn't have cheated than.' and 'You deserved it for cheating.'

Is it just me or does anyone else find this entire story really immature? The labelling of 'cheaters' by Microsoft, the mother's response, Q13 FOX News actually covering this as a story?
...

If Fox News Infotainment is on the story...

I really want to believe it's fake. But it's like, I don't know whether to be intrigued on this or to say "hey, he got what he deserved"
