A great series was given unrealistic goals, even changed dramatically all just to make more profit. And now that the game hasn't met those goals the developer is being made to pay for it - they're firing parts of the dev team less than a month after the damn game came out. This is not going to end well and it actually may be the first time in history that EA has directly pissed me off.

You guys don't want me as your enemy.
It's KoA Reckoning all over again.
This isn't really true, 38 only partnered with EA to publish the game and they really went down the toilet when they took a risk and unfortunately released a lacklustre game which effectively bankrupt the company. So not EAs fault (that time anyway).
Not really pointing this to EA, was just referring to the unrealistic expectations that brought that game down.

I figured this might happen, given that EA said Dead Space 3 would have to sell 5 million in order for them to keep the franchise alive. An unrealistic goal, considering that Dead Space 3 had NONE of the marketing Dead Space 2 had.

Oops....But I guess that's what happens when you turn a sci-fi horror game into Halo all in the name of "Broadening the audience." The audience doesn't need broadened. If a player doesn't want to piss his pants because the monsters in the game have a tendency to jump out of the walls and go 'Boo' every ten seconds, then he won't get it.

With the way it was going, good. I would prefer Dead Space as a fun game that completely fails at horror than an action game pretending to be scary so if they go with the latter than I invite them to politely die along with all the other ruined IPs.

did everyone here not get the update?

its not confirmed
Trust me, nobody is reading the post. It's probably safe to assume a lot of them read the title and went straight to outrage mode.

Ya know, sometimes I think it was merciful that EA shelved Mirror's Edge -- both Mirror's Edge and Dead Space came out in the same period where EA seemed willing to throw development/marketing dollars and new ip. Mirror's Edge developed a loving niche audience but no big sales while Dead Space earned a spot on the A list of the EA conveyor belt with its big sales.. earning it safer and safer sequels until it had been worn out. At least I never saw faith need to stick it to the man by wearing micro-transaction shoes.

Well that's what happens when you mismanage a franchise and have unrealistic expectations.

I mean holy fuck, did they actually believe they would be raking in the dough with this?

I don't believe EA's response to this either, would they actually admit to inadvertently killing one of their own franchises out of sheer stupidity?

Shame really as Dead Space was one of the few new IPs of this generation that was successful, seemed quite different from the other games knocking about. I wonder how EA will react to this, look at the positives of a new IP generating them money and learn from what made it stumble when creating more or keep with the sure bets of long established franchises knowing theirs less chance of financial failure.

This had made me wonder how many 'big' new IPs have actually been made this generation and who's made them.
