I think they'd be better off remaking it based on the books, far less cloying then the movie.
I agree. Although I think it might be hard for modern audiences to relate to a satire of late 19th century American monetary policy.

If Warner Bros treats the movie with respect and hires people who will direct/produce/act it with respect to how much of an icon the original movie is, I could see this remake as a possible good movie for what the studios probably consider the CGI generation. which is too say most people under 30. Given the history of remakes however I dont expect that there will be much chance of this being any good. The whole Wicked and OZ:Great and Powerfull movies, sound like they have much more promise to be good.

Director: M. Night Shamalyan.
Starring:
Megan Fox as Dorothy
Shia LeBouf as the Scarecrow
Liam Neeson as the Cowardly Lion
Christian Bale as the Tin Man

Changes made to the script: Dorothy is no longer in Kansas but instead she's a hooker in in the year 2100 Angeles, a world where robotics and cyborgs exist and are widely used. After a nuclear missile launched by the Russians hits its target the subsequent blast coupled with the explosion of an alien craft creates a portal to another dimension that drags Dorothy, the LA Hooker, into it. There, she accidentally kills a super powered half human half robot hybrid that ruled over that part of the world and ends up meeting with the Tin Man, a Cyborg in need of a new power source that lost his wife due to his own greed, the "Lion", a mafia kingpin that had body parts attached to him that belonged to a lion in need of a new heart due to the last one having been damaged after an experiment went wrong and blasted him with radiation and the Scarecrow, a mentally ill person from an asylum scheduled for execution. They all learn that they can return home if they go to the Emerald City, the last bastion of mutated human civilization after the robot uprising. The big twist is that the new world they're in is in fact Earth a thousand years after a nuclear holocaust that destroyed much of the civilized world leaving only robots and mutated humans to survive. The second twist is that the wizard of Oz is in fact a machine who harvests and eats people for survival. The third twist will be Dorothy waking up as a child in her bed, realizing it was just a terrible, terrible nightmare. OR WAS IT?

It's how it's going to be people. Don't deny the inevitable.

I'm in a performing Arts course at college and we're doing a one-hour rendition of "The Wizard of Oz, with loads of modifications to involve everyone and make it crappy. I thought nobody could butcher the original like I'm being forced to do, I guess we'll just see about that

INteresting...re-making a movie from the original script... A.K.A not butchering the movie with bullshit and idiotic linesthat make no sense... Then again I'd love to see the corny dialogue you'd expect from a 1939 movie in a modern film...
Me too, I'd love to see this if it is good

I knew it was only a matter of time before Hollywood began to rape the real classics. What's next masterpiece they're lining up to ruin, Casablanca? Gone with the Wind maybe?

Also yes I am aware that there were more than one Wizard of Oz movies. This however is the one most people know and love.
It's kind of amusing, considering how much the movie diverges from the book. suddenly, one interpretation is sacrosanct, even stranger when you consider that they're going back to the source material for that specific version.

I actually think it's a shame we'll probably never see a big budget adaptation faithful to the novel, because it's so much better as a storytelling piece. The '39 Oz is an astonishing film marvel, but does not do justice to the book.

But oh no, they're going to butcher the movie. Sigh.

I can't help but call to mind the horrible shot-for-shot Psycho remake from 1999. That's possibly the textbook example of a bad remake for being so utterly and completely pointless and inferior to the original, but this might just take the cake. I refuse to watch any remake on principle at this point. I don't care if everyone thinks it's the greatest thing since sliced fucking bread. Fuck Hollywood.

Bad Warner Bros.! BAD! The Wizard of Oz is one of the sacred movies you're not allowed to make. Even the biggest of dipshit ass-hat directors know better than to remake it. It's sacred! SACRED!
So true. How dare they! If they decide to remake Singin' In The Rain after that, or White Christmas... Consequences will never be the same. D:<
They done goofed!
lol

I don't know, Zemericks is a pretty compitent director, and an adaptation might not be that bad. I recently started reading the Oz graphic novels based directly upon L. Frank Baum's books and they have turned out to be spectacular! Then again, comic books and movies are two different things.

SON OF A *****! How many Wizards of Ozzes do we need? Also, which script? There were a million versions of The Wizards of Oz made back in the day.
The one used in the movie?

OT: I can't say I'm bothered. Sure, it might be a classic, but if it's done well it could be pretty good.

No... Just No... It's a classic that still holds up today and is loved and admired by millions. Why on earth would you ruin it...

Remake Wing Commander and give us the Sci-Fi epic we should of had...

This may be a good thing - the original is so old (and kind of lame, imho) that I think a reboot would be fine.

Although, I would like to see some movie versions of some of the other books in the series. There are a ton of them, so there should be some good stuff in there. Anyone remember Return to Oz (I think that's the title) from the 80's? That movie was awesome.

You know what would be great? If they f**ckin' BACKED OFF. This is the ONE f**kin' movie they are not allowed to touch, and those stupid corporate assholes just couldn't keep their filthy fingers off of it?

This is not cool, bro.
