I, love it how fans these days are never happy, Bioshock was great, Fallout 3 (though different from the first 2 games) was great. If you get the same experience over and over it will eventually become dull.

That's not entirely fair, and most of the review staff of magazines around the world would disagree with you. You can raise the "It's not Fallout" argument, and that would have more credence, but saying it out-and-out sucked would be hard to support.
Reviewers jump onto anything nowadays. No game is perfect (unlike what these reviewers believe) and giving fallout 3 anythning over an 8 or 80% is near criminal.
See up until a month ago you could get away with saying this, however there's now a minor snag. And by "minor snag" I mean "even other developers think it's awesome". See at GDC 2009 they did their yearly Game Developers Choice Awards. Game of the Year and (in what I'm sure would make most people's eyes pop out of their skulls) Best Writing were both snagged by Fallout 3. What this means is that the closest thing to a peer review determined, impartially mind you, that Fallout 3 was the best game put out in 2008. So you can personally not like the game, but at this point repeatedly slamming the press for giving it high marks is a bit redundant. Of course now I guess you could just hate the whole industry (or at the very least the people at gamasutra.com and Game Developer Magazine)

Having said that I find this a very good move by Bethesda, showing that they have always cared about being as faithful as possible to the franchise, by giving some of the original creators the opportunity to work on it again. And I loved Fallout 3's East Coast setting being bleaker and even more hopeless than the West Coast. In fact I had a theory that the Enclave put so many Vaults that were doomed to failure around the DC area for a reason, but that's a story for another time. Still I'll be glad to see a next-gen Fallout game that returns to its Western origins. And as to wanting to see other world locations in the Fallout Universe, I've come to the conclusion that really, not many of them matter. Mostly because by the 2050s everywhere but the US and China seemed to be devastated by endless war, but also because keeping it in the United States reflects the 1950s ideals of isolationism and The Red Scare and all that wonderful stuff.

Also I don't think Vegas is played out just yet, we've only really had one game that has Vegas as a central setting a year since San Andreas, whereas in any given year we'll get what seems like 2 or 3 WWII games.

I agree that its a minor snag but I personally feel that game development has become a lot duller and has begun to fizzle out slightly. The games industry has really lost its way especially in terms of creativity (hence Fallut 3) and I believe the rise of Console gamers (of which I am a part of sadly) has made games... well dumber... so saying nowadays that a game is really good is basically saying its better than the other crap everyone else put out this year.

Fallout 1 & 2 are games I will always come back to, having finished Fallout 3, I can easily say never again.

Well maybe my memory is a little hazy, but didnt people already have problems when Fallout 2 came out with it not being faithful enough to the first Fallout? I certainly felt there were differences that could have been left out. Its a shame Bethesda feels so shamed by diehard Fallout fans criticism of Fallout 3, because even when "ORIGINAL DEVS!!!!" have been working on Fallout titles, if my memory serves, there have always been voices of discontent.

I thought Fallout 3 was MASSIVELY overrated, but still a very good game in its own rights. Personally this seems like a waste of time to me, because I believe Fallout games have long ago proven their inability to please their entire fan base with each subsequent game.

Harold is a tree that observes you using other trees? What the fuck is that? Anime?) and the complete lack of humour make it hard for me to even call it "Fallout". The only thing that redeems this game a bit is that it was HUGE and had nice graphics.[/quote]

Interesting, although Vegas is slowly becoming the World War II setting for cityscapes. Come on videogame developers there are plenty of other interesting locals in the world. Fallout New Dubai anyone?
Fallout London sounds more appealing. They never mentioned many other countries in the original Fallouts, but England popped up once or twice.

I'd love to see my street Fallout-ed.

Oh christ no obsidian bollocks up every series they get involved with in my opinion! Lets judge the evidence shall we neverwinter nights... brilliant. Neverwinter nights 2... bug ridden piece of shit. KoTOR... amazing. KoTOR 2... total crap.
KOTOR 2's story was entirely superior to the original- which already had an amazing story. It was darker, more original, contained more customization options. Your character actually felt like a real person throughout the entire story. The only thing place where it failed was the ending, which can't be blamed on Obsidian.

The Vegas thing is dumb. I never played Fallouts 1 or 2, and 3 didn't impress me much. I doubt I'll be giving this any time. Maybe if it wasn't set in Vegas I would try it.

I agree with you that fans of the originals shouldn't judge it on its differences, but... I still don't think Fallout 3 was "teh best game evar!1" I didn't think Bioshock was great either. Then again, I'm a Halo fan, so my opinion on The Escapist holds as much water as a drunkard elf with Downs syndrome.

OMFG YES!
Please let it be a HD top down, expanded version of Fallout 2.
Im going to be watching this VERY closely, Im hoping that all those hints about returning to its roots will suggest reverting to Fallouts old style.

Ahhh well, any new Fallout that comes to the PS3 is probably gonna persuade me to part with my cash.
Im excited now :)

Hey Obsidian, you know how you guys made the original fallouts? Yeah, remember how there wasn't just one city, there was nearly a whole state? Can we go back to that please instead of you're single game are? We can't because you're using the oblivion engine? Oh, sorry I came here then....

(Please?)

Uh.. what? Just b/c it didn't use the 1990s top down PC technology (which was groundbreaking for the time), you think the game sucks? Are you out of your damned mind?Fallout 3 was probably in the top 20 best games ever. A large environment to explore, a pretty good story and conversation mechanic (although Mass Effect 2 just surpassed it), fun weapons, interesting characters and setting, and good combat that wasn't turn based shit. What more could you want!

You need to explain yourself... if it was just the "top down" thing, then your incredibly dense and should be "sectioned". Do you think we should do all games in 8bit NES graphics?

However, I personally wouldn't have an issue if they developed a game FOR top down fans (like Capcom and Sega are doing old style games for Mega Man and Sonic) if they have enough of a fan base. Just don't dump on a really good game b/c they changed up the style

I think you're missing the point. The guy you responded to was saying that you have every right to dislike the game, but it's not fair to bash it and make up excuses for it's acclaim and financial success. I fucking HATE stealth games with a passion but I don't go around saying that Ghost Recon and Splinter Cell are bad games.. they just aren't my cup of tea. You need to respect the fact that other people may enjoy what you dislike.

Also, I've never been a PC gamer (my parents couldn't afford a high end gaming PC, but could afford consoles), but I also don't think its right to say games are worse now. Again, its a question of taste, not fact. Another example, I'd rather read a book or stick bamboo shoots in my fingernails then play a "point and click" adventure game, which is one of PC's mainstays, but if you like them, play and enjoy. I do see you're point about lack of creativity in games, and somewhat agree. I though Fallout 3 was a great game with an interesting theme (never played the top downs, so I don't know if they were so much better, even though top down format sucks, in my opinion.)

I didn't play games in the 1990s, Fallout 3 is the only fallout I have played.

I don't care for NES graphics, i have never owned an NES. Pokemon Blue is as retro as I go. I don't play many games, but I tried Fallout 3 and it sucked dick. Thats my opinion, get over it.

Haha.
Strange.

Anywaay...
I have seen FO1 and 2 fanboys before, and to be honest, this should seriously get them off.
They bitched soooo long and soooo hard about FO3 that it wasn't funny.

Sorry to be pedantic, but argh you made a few consistent spelling errors there.
The two that really drew my attention were your renditions of "England", and "Facist".
Ok, that being said, I concur.
