Fencedude on Gamefaqs and myself, because we came from playing Super Robot Wars (An SRPG in which you save EVERY GOD DAMN TURN THE FRIGGING RNG) to Valkyria Chronicles, we were allready at the pre-requisit crazy.
Fine, fine, you win, that game has too awesome a title to argue against XD
Which? Valkyria Chronicles

or Super Robot Wars?

The japanese really know how to sell you on a game don't they?
The 2nd, and you dont have to post a link to Valkyria Chronicles, i've posted half a dozen times in this thread sharing my experiences and thoughts on it - i know what it is! XD

And yes, yes they really, really do
I know, I just really love both PVs, I mean THAT is how you sell a game to your audience. Love the SRW games, Take Mecha Anime put the story in a blender sprinkle some original element make it all fit and make SENSE and then serve.

In western terms, imagine if The Avengers, the Justice League, Spider Man, the Scoobies, the Fantastic Four, the X Men, the Doctor, and The Incredible Hulk teamed up with GI Joe and SG-1. Now imagine the threat it would take to bring them all together, and imagine them pounding it flat.

In the year 179 of the New Western Calendar, the One Year War broke out between the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon, but was halted when an object crashed to Earth, landing on South Atalia Island. An investigative team from the Extra-Over Technological Investigative Institute discovered that the object was an alien battleship with highly-advanced technology. Despite the warnings of Dr. Bian Zoldark, the Federation hides the evidence of intelligent alien life, and uses the time to increase their military power. Bian founds the Divine Crusaders to utilize the Extra-Over Technology found on the ship to devise weapons capable of protecting the Earth from alien forces, should the planet become embroiled in the conflict.

During this time, the economic troubles caused by the Federation's buildup saw the rise of many anti-Federation movements, such as the Neo-Zeon, who had retreated to the asteroid Axis. In response, The federation establishes special forces units, such as the Titans and OZ. Other forces, such as the Demon Empire and Dr. Hell also threaten the earth, but are pushed back by the teams of Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, and Raideen.

In the year 187, the Excelion battleship battle a force of STM Cs (Space Terrible Monster Crowd), when they are suddenly attacked by another alien fleet, known as the Aerogaters...

Thus begun the four-part saga of Super Robot Wars Alpha, perhaps the best-known and most popular of all the SRW games. It also holds to this distinction of bringing in the awesome music of the Jam Project.

And to keep this related to VC. They want to make a VC 2, we want them to make a VC 2.

Also what was everyones first reaction to mission 7? mine was " Ohgod Ohgod Ohgod GIANT INVINCIBLE TANK, WHY IS THIS MISSION NOT OVER YET? WHO WAS THE SICK FUCK WHO DESIGNED THIS LEVEL ANYWAY?!?... HOLY SHIT THEY HAVE LASER BEAMS!"
I probably would have bought a copy of super robot wars from the moment i heard i could be using Gundams aganst EVAs, well if anywhere near me stocked a copy anyway. Oh, and i absolutely love that in japan plot, realism, immersion, sence and all those prized western gaming stables can be ignored completely for the sake of shoehorning more awesome in there XD.

My reaction to level 7 was only a tad different - I was feeling pretty cocky up to that point because i hadnt lost a battle yet and no-one bar the generic troopers from the 2nd or 3rd battle had died. I saw how frigging enormous it was and thought WOAH... Bring it on, but when Selvaria came and wiped out 3 of my best soldier in one go i was basically screaming BULLSHIT at my tv.. and then running as far away as possible in pure fear XD

Most underrated game of 2008.
It's not exactly underrated. Underrated implies that people say it's not very good but it is. Whereas everyone who's actually played Valkyria Chronicles says it's really good, but since Sega decided that they didn't want to sell more than six copies they didn't bother advertising it (seriously, the only decent ad copy I saw for it, a mockup of the famous Kitchener poster with Alicia instead, appeared some months after release).

Still, there's an anime series now, which is reasonably good and might attract a few new people to the party (it need moar Marina though).
Sorry,
Underhyped then.

Played it, loved it.

However, the fanbase is getting annoying as hell. Mostly due to crediting it for having a five star story, which it really, really didn't have.
The gameplay and art style were great, but let's be honest, the plot is horrid mess of anime.

Jeez you really stumbled into the wrong genre XD. Well to us fans the answer is no, and besides facing Selvaria in real time would be a complete death wish.
Christ, no kidding! I'm on the Trench Warfare mission (13, 14? chapter), and I lost the Edelweiss as soon as she showed up. It SUCKED. Only tried it once, but I think I've figured out how to capture their stuff easier, so hooray.

Haha sorry to hear yougot your ass kicked, she did that to me during the desert mission with the MASSIVE TANK so now i stay as far away from her as i possibly can at every opportunity now XD. Btw you listened to all the advice your team gave you right? - ie get you tanks into the ditches immediately and pop out and back to shoot at her, just purchase all the accuracy tank equipment from R&D and its actually pretty easy.
Yeah, I guess armor's not as useful there. =p Thanks, I'll try that. Does the Shamrock's alternate weapons have any effect on her?

And no I didn't get my tanks to cover, I was trying to get the shamrock into the trenches to use it offensively, didn't realize I couldn't get into the trenches before it was too late.
Yeah, armor's nice and all but she has a freaking lazer XD

I dunno about the shamrock's flamethrower but i wouldnt want to try and find out XD. I did however find out the hard way that the gatling gun did bugger all, but to be honest its accuracyis waaaay lower than the edelweiss so just put it into the ditch and ignore it for the rest of the battle :)
*cough cough*, It wasn't that hard, you just hide the tanks in the trenches, they even tell you to do that, then every time you hit her, she lose movement points, I think 2 hits made her unable to move the next turn.

People say this game is hard, I beg to differ, I think the difficulty was okay, I only saw the game over screen a few times, and yeah, it is one of my most beloved games ever.
Pst, we know, i found it easy and he made a simple mistake, dont be a douche.

Anyway, to the other point, yeah the difficalty was fine, the only thing that annoyed me was how swiftly a defeat can come out of nowhere the first time through a level - random reinforcements you didnt know about and the like - and how there's no checkpoint system, so failing a hour+ long battle is beyond frustrating. Moreover as i refused to let ANY soldier die, so i saw the game over screen twice as much via suicides than anyhing else.
Uhhh....

You can save during a battle.
I wish I knew that before I beat it.

Just wanted to add this little bit in because it wasn't added into the topic yet.

http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2009/04/20/valkyria-chronicles-sales-jump-in-the-us-tops-charts-in-japan/

Apparently VC's making a comeback... on Amazon it sold the 5th highest for PS3 games last week, and in Japan it topped the charts.

This may be a sleeper hit yet.

My reaction wasn't the correct one, seein' as how I'd already heard about the fight from brothers who played that fight before me, and lost. A lot.

I've put over 40 hour into it and I'm up to chaper 15. It's my game of this generation so far. The characters are believable the story itself isn't amazing, but the characters make it have a lot of weight and emotional impact.
I also love the soundtrack. The intro is just breathtaking. Watch it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zx8Mc8xZFC0&feature=related
