Well, I guess Sony proved Gabe wrong.

It's pretty impressive (assuming it all works) that Sony are willing to work with Valve to that level. I can't see Microsoft allowing cross platform content anytime soon.
Microsoft tried that years ago with Shadowrun and they quickly discovered that a mediocre player with a mouse and keyboard could run circles around an elite player with a joystick.
Part of the issue I always had with that 'study' was how limited it was. One game, guys? Really? That's the extent of your scientific method? Furthermore, they denied the gamers the option to try it for themselves, which irked me to no end. They simply 'decided' to segregate the two groups. I may mainly play console, and that might have meant I'd be getting my butt whupped... erm, worse than already happens in multiplayer games... but I'd rather the option was mine to do it or not.

Sony just realised how stupid Microsoft was for hitching up its daddy pants and trying to put limits on what Valve could do with the 360. Microsoft threw Steam out on its ass, and Sony welcomed it in with a warm blanket, a cup of cocoa, and the freedom to implement Steam on the PS3 however it wanted.
Microsoft made the same exact mistake with Steam as Nintendo did with Sony (which led to the Playstation). This is awesome. I love my PS3, I love Steam, and now they are one.
why did that remind of the simpsons movie
any way this is going to be awesome

yeah, because sony and nintendo merging would have been fantastic.

I don't get what the issue is here. Microsoft sounds like it wants to compete. Let them. That means more services for us to choose from. (even if its shit like windows live)
at the time, yeah, it WOULD have been fantastic for both companies. imagine if Nintendo had made the FIRST CD based home console for that generation. think the N64, but with better graphics, sound, and third party support.
basically, Ninty and Sony were going to get together and make a CD based console. Nintendo imposed too much over Sony, so Sony pulled out and made the Playstation.

And sure, let Microsoft compete. they'll lose and the rest of us get to enjoy Steam-y goodness on our PS3s (and vice-versa)

I really wish I had waited until they mentioned the PS3 bonus stuff before pre-ordering from Steam. This was one game I really wanted a hard copy of, but I couldn't be bothered to wait until I could get into town to pick up a copy.

Damn you Valve and your totally dependable awesomeness. I should have known better :(

I just unplugged my PS3 and psychically hugged it.

Fuck yeah, Sony. Looks like poor Mr. Xbox gets to continue sitting on the shelf, gathering dust while Mr. PS3 gets all the action.

Hell, even Mr. PS2 and Mrs. Gamecube get tons more action.

Don't worry Mr. XBox, Gears of War 3 will come out soon...

This is cool news. I look forward to more games having cross-functionality between the PS3 and PC in the future. Like Borderlands. I can see RPG's having more legitimacy in that, tho FPS's should work fine. What I can do with a mouse and keyboard I've seen plenty of players do just as well with a control pad.

Kinda sucks that Valve doesn't let you cancel preorders. If they had confirmed buying a PS3 version would net you the Steam version, too, I'd have done that instead.
They told that when they announced Steam for PS3. Long before pre-orders for the PC began. It wasn't a secret.

Microsoft has stated many times they don't support cross-platform play because, and this is from an actual quote: console players are worse at FPS than PC players are.
That and MS would see Steam as a threat to XBLA and GFWL.
For good reason, as GFWL stinks and gets in the way of the game more than aids it.
Their loss, really. The PS3 still has plenty of potential to it. XBox reached its threshold long before Kinect came out. As it stands, Kinect is proving to be better with PC than giving that crappy console new life.

I don't put much credence in what they used for a test. As I stated in my previous post I have watched console players do just as awesomely on console as I do with mouse and keyboard on PC. More than likely the person they put on console was more a PC player and not as tested on console. It is just as well that they don't put cross-platform play into LIVE, as that will only give them an excuse to try to charge GFWL users for online play.
Or maybe that would be a good thing as publishers would drop GFWL from their games faster than a tap dance.

You're telling me that if I buy the PS3 version, I'm getting the PC version for free as well?
Yes

Oh. Cross-platform, you say?

This will be...interesting.
I really don't understand why we can't have cross platform between PC, PS3 AND 360. It would solve so many problems and stop my friends going on at me to buy a 360!

The question I need an answer to is; Does Portal 2 require a Steam ID to play on the PS3 if you're not going to play online?

If yes, consider my pre-order canceled. I'll never make a Steam account. Ever.

So, am I going to have to get a Steam account in order to play Portal 2? What if I don't want one? Am I stuck?

And this is why the PS3 is infinitley superior to the 360. Micro$oft can gargle my anal fluids.

Well considering the number of times microsoft basically told Valve to fuck off when they wanted to update their games, it would definitely make them the better of the two.

It says very clearly in the article that you have to make a Steam account in order to play.

Why don't people open the Steam knowledge base link from the topic? 100% of the answers people are asking are answered there.

As for PS3 buyers getting the PC version, that was confirmed by valve months ago...

Windows live is massive failure to my eyes. Windows live is not supported in my country so games that use it will be pirated. I got a great games library on my Steam though.

wait, can you buy the PC version, or does it only work with PS3 discs?
No
aw man,
but can you do co-op w/the same disc on console and PC?
Do you mean split-screen? Because if so the PS3 version will most likely have it. But the PC version won't.

Also, the PS3 and PC versions use 2 separate formats of disks, so you can't use one with the other.
What would be the use for split-screen on PC? It's not like you can plug in two keyboards and mice.
Left 4 Dead actually had code for splitscreen, if you plugged in an extra controller and typed some stuff in the console you could play co-cop with a friend on one computer. I guess there will be some kind of similar (unofficial) solution to Portal 2.

Valve, I love you guys, but you could add a real-life working Portal gun to the PS3 version, and I'd still just buy the game for PC. Fuck Sony.
Really? Because if they did offer a real life Portal gun you'd have to be an absolute idiot for not purchasing the game. What £40 for a good game and a real life portal gun. That would be insane, and anyone that denies they wouldn't go for it either is an idiot or chock full of so much pride that the pure stuck up nature of their being has blinded them. I understand Sony hasn't endeared themselves to your heart, but is it any reason to fuck em. Plus you can actually hook a mouse and keyboard to your ps3, Steam might also allow the same offer to happen for PS3, cross platforming is what we have been waiting for, and stop being so elitist.

You see Microsoft?

That's what you get when you flip Valve off by not allowing them to release DLC for free and limit what they can do with your console.

I'm buying this game on the PC anyway and was never not going to but I interpret this as a slight act of revenge for making pre-switch me pay for my L4D DLC.
