Half Life to date is the only sequel I can describe as not "holding the gamer up in a wedgie while stealing his/her lunch money". None of today's games can even think of touching the bar Valve set with Half Life and the cast in iron sequel Half Life 2. If you seriously think Halo (number or title here) or any other popular (and generic, oh so generic) shooter these days is better in combat intensity, character development, immersion, story progression, game mechanics you probably did NOT play the game.

Or you also like fat ugly chick without having a drink.

For the people who think it's overrated, of course you are entitled to your own opinion, but please remember Half Life set the standard for modern shooters. Saying it's "not that great" is basically taking a shit on the entire genre.

In regards to all the people saying "Half-Life 2 wasn't all that great/is overrated."

That is your OPINION, not a fact. At the time, it was exceptionally well designed, stunningly beautiful, atmospheric as hell, smart, and the characters were the best ever seen in a videogame. There's a reason the game got the scores it did, even if you personally didn't enjoy it.

I know what I just said comes across as Valve-fanboyism but I get annoyed whenever anyone states their opinion as though it were the only one worth listening to.
Even at the time it was released, I found it awful. And what's funny about the valve fanboyism is that if someone didn't like it, they are labeled as a troll.
You missed my point. I'm perfectly okay with you not liking it, but for some people to act like the game was overrated because they personally didn't enjoy it is nothing short of egotistical and disrespectful.
I see. And the fans that says its the best thing since sliced bread(for example) is a bit annoying. So you hate it when people who didn't enjoy it call it crap/overrated and I hate it when the fans says its the greatest thing ever(for example) and I didn't like it and they think I have no taste.

Well it's Valve's fault for making a very good and much loved game that will probably stand the test of time. Bunch of no-good do-gooders!

To be frank, I think of every other game they make (L4D, Portal, etc) as just Half-Life 2 mods. All their other games being measured against it makes perfect sense in that context.

You say that, but modern FPS' are closer to Halo than Half-Life. Regenerating health, 2 firearm limit, melee separate from weapons, grenades separate from weapons. About all Half-Life added was some form of grav-gun/physics mechanic, maybe vehicle sections (Tho Halo had them too).

For general gameplay tho, Half-Life feels positively old school. Health packs and hyperspace pockets for all your weapons galore! In fact the only other game I can think of that stuck with that was Resistance(PS3), even they changed to the 2 weapon/health regen system for Resistance 2.

Story and writing are solid tho, no argument there.

I don't know why they're holding Half Life 2 up as an model for their games, it's just going to make them worse, and worse, and worse until finally they reach the level of horrible gameplay that is Half Life 2.

Seriously, this game is even more over-hyped than FFVII and Halo combined, and it's getting ridiculous. I spent a total of two hours playing Half Life 2 before I had to put it down for being completely boring. A first person shooter is not supposed to be boring. The characters weren't even all that great. Amazing, considering I've heard Half Life 2 is known to be memorable for it's characters. Maybe because I never played the first one, but I found myself gritting my teeth as I toughed it through part of the game, finally giving up when I'd lost all interest and started plugging in my PS2 again...

It's garbage.

Hey, I think the fans who think it's the greatest game ever can be overzealous as well. Regardless of whether or not you liked the game though, all I'm saying is that stating your opinion as fact is egotistical; that's all I'm trying to get across here.

I don't mind people disliking a game, but there seems to be a rather strange itching/buring hatred for Half-life 2 here...Oh well.

Yes, Half-life 2 was an amazing game, Valve. Try to keep that in mind and focus on that one thing you keep forgetting to make. You know what I mean, right? It starts with an "E" and ends with a "3".

Half-Life 2 was decent, although I prefer the Battlefield-style or the run-and-gun DOOM style FPS's more. And while Portal 2 may have a good shot, I'm fairly positive that I won't be helping it along.

I think the whole "FPS games went Halo" thing is caused by the fact that many of today's FPS games are multiplatform (or in some cases, primarily made for consoles). It's tedious to cycle through 10 different weapons (especially if you urgently need a melee attack or grenades) using a console gamepad. Halo, which was primarily released for consoles, solved this issue by limiting your weapons and separating melee/grenades from the main weapons. Halo finally proved that FPS games were possible on a console by changing some of the core rules for previous FPS games that were mainly made for PCs. Half Life 2 didn't follow this path, as Valve is, and has mostly been primarily a PC FPS developer. With today's market being mostly multi-platform, it's simpler to just stick with the proven (by Halo) method of 2 weapons and regenerating health with separate melee/grenades.

Although I miss the good old "carry as many weapons as you want, health is replenished by finding a medkit"

This. And it wouldn't have sold so well if they didn't package it together with games like Team Fortress 2 and Portal... I know that I personally didn't care much for HL2 in that package, nor was I a big fan of it at any point.
Except that it did extremely well pre-Orange Box.

...get...out...

OT: It is fairly reasonable that every game Valve releases will be compared to one of it's first and best games. However Valve has yet to release a game I haven't enjoyed.
