They should seriously ditch the movie idea and pitch it as a short 12 minute cartoon to the likes of Adult Swim. That is not only the perfect place for a show like this, but the niche market of the nerdy late night cartoon watchers is about right for them as well. This would be about as perfect as possible.
Adult Swim wouldn't want it by any stretch of the imagination, they're too busy running "quality" comedy like Tim & Eric and Xavier: Renegade Angel. And I said all of that with sarcasm so heavy it could flatten a house.

It will never be released to cinemas. This is a straight to DvD thing garanteed.

Anyway, I could see a TF2 movie working. I mean, it'd be the first violent/adult CG animated movie I've ever heard of, which would certainly be interesting to see. I could see it being a huge action movie, maybe each character is an assassin or something, or they're told to teach up and take down another team. I don't know, I'm just throwing stuff around here.

Im really not sure about this, I like all of the meet the team things, But a movie, chances are its ganna suck and im actully embarresed to even think about it, how are you ganna introduce the charectars, it has no plot to it what so ever it is just a multiplayer game, dont get me wrong its one of my favorite multiplayer games but really, a movie?
It's got no plot. So they add one. Problem solved.

I don't think an actual movie would work. A collection of hilarious shorts, maybe. A movie, no.
There are a few pros and a few cons of making a movie. A big pro is the fact that it gives at least one of the TF scenarios an acutal storyline (I'd like Gravel Pit). Yet there are a number of cons. My big beef is seeing all my favorite characters get offed. Blu Spy got blown off in Meet the Spy, so who knows who gets the boot in the movie. It'd screw up the story a little, but all in all, I think I'd enjoy seeing TF2 in a movie theater.

I like what another person suggested. It could be like a typical Two Fort game, but then everything stops when nobody hears the announcer claim the intelligence was taken. Then everyone gets involved in an epic adventure to get the announcer back.

Maybe have a 3rd party make the story and animate it with the original voice actor. Like have the Rooster Teeth guys make the story and videos but anyone who is a fan of The Leet World knows that Valve doesn't support 3rd party machinima.

Isn't Xavier being written by the same guys behind Wonder Showzen?

Yes yes yes yes YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES.

This would be amazing. Even if it isn't based on TF2, any movie by Valve would be worth seeing.

I am suddenly reminded of the TF2 RPG fan art.
An idea this awesome just can't exist beyond the back of some asylum inhabiter's mind.

Yeah it has potential, but I'm thinking the mini series of shorts for adult swin or the like, would be a better place than trying to sell a movie to a world of...lets face it, non gamers.

I'm all for video game movies, and I'd love to see more good ones, and in the right hands..and Valve seem to have the right hands for everything, it could work.

On a side note, I was disappointed to read that the upcoming Warcraft Movie is going to be live action. Their CGI intros to WOW and WC3 are just amazing, and I for one would love to see 90 mins of well crafted story unleashed onto the big screen, when I look back on the power and emotion that they display with a 2 minute intro to each expansion pack.

Of course, there's part of me wanting it to be CGI so that the multitude of races can be recreated well.

I dunno... after watching the "Meet the Spy" video, I think they may just be able to pull it off. I mean, look at the Final Fantasy VII movie - is a TF2 movie that inconceivable?

To be honest, I could see the cast of Team Fortress 2 in full length, Pixar-esque, movie; but I just wouldn't know what it would be about.

Adding a plot to Team Fortress 2 would be like adding logic into Suda51, they just don't mix. So far, the plot of Team Fortress 2 has been as follows.

"There is a red team. There is a blue team. They hate each other."

With that said, don't make a Team Fortress 2 movie Valve, MAKE HALF-LIFE 2: EPISODE 3 DAMMIT!!!

If anyone is interested in reading the light board, he is a proper HD upload:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OR4N5OhcY9s

And as far as a feature length production being PROFITABLE, consider that a lot of the production value has already been invested in - most of the set design and character design and animation is done - up-rezzing the material to DVD or even film-level quality wouldn't be the most difficult thing they've ever tackled. The question is how do you make a compelling story out of class-driven combat?

Someone was complaining to me once that cp_egypt was bad because it didn't fit the 'story' of TF2, and I told him that exact same fact. :) Didn't seem to grasp the idea that "the builders union vs. the demolition crew" was just a macguffin for the art design.
