Well some people predict the BlackMesaProject (proper remake of HL1 on HL2 engine) will be done by the end of the year.
Not going to happen. If it did it would have been over three years ago, and if it did it would probably have been and definitely now be a jumbled mess of different quality, different looking and different feeling components. I mean jesus, the mod was started seven years ago.

No, it's just that it's never going to be released and if it ever would then it would be a jumbled up mess. I mean seriously think about when it was being released? 06? 08?
It may eventually be released but then I think it's highly likely to be a "jumbled mess" indeed. The last time they said they would release it was in 2009, from then on there were scarcely any news.

And no, having a finished soundtrack doesn't mean much. Software is not music.

What the hell happened to Black Mesa: Source?

Did the people making it just stop?
They announced a release date in 2009. It was not released. Since then the team apparently decided to keep it quiet and not build any more hype. So someday they may jump out of the darkness with the mod all ready. Or they may never release anything.

A huge project like this, done by volunteers, is no small feat.

Edit: let's hear it for ninjas!
Shame there has been exactly zero news about it in over a year.

It's pretty much safe to assume the mod is dead, but hey a Valve-made remake would be welcomed.

I doubt it, keep in mind alien swarm started out as a mod and no one heard anything from it for years then suddenly, BOOOM, valve makes it, its own game and gives it to everyone for free

Anyone saying Black Mesa is dead or that no news has been released haven't been keeping up with the wiki

If any of you actually read some of the info on the Black Mesa site there's plenty of explaination for why they haven't been updating or offering a release date. People get their hopes up, get nitpicky, whatever, but the modders there have their reasons for keeping quiet.

As for the fact it's taken them 6-7 years so far, have you actually considered just how much work the BM team has to do? Completely remodelling EVERYTHING in the game, doing new sounds, textures from scratch, voice acting, environments, scripting, interactions.... I'll loosely quote someone from their forums when he said "look at how long it takes well known developers to release a game, 2-3 years is pretty standard. Black Mesa is a group of people working for free, in their spare time." Honestly, it's not unreasonable to think it would take this long given how much effort is required.

So no, the mod isn't dead. It's very much still alive... dun dun dun dun nuh.

But yeah, a Valve remake with new/different stuff would be quite interesting indeed.

I don't think it'd ever happen. Fun to think about or at least entertain the question.

Plus let's not forget about Black Mesa Source, as I'm glad others have mentioned as well. Still hoping that's on track.

I never said it was dead, only that it's been quiet. I even said it may just appear someday, out of the blue.

But let's face it, as noted above, it's a huge amount of work. They have to keep working, people leave the team, sometimes they have to scrap things that were done before and redo them, and so on. And it's all done voluntarily, in the people's free time. People who have the skills to do stuff like this could be using (and often are using) such skills to earn money. It's not easy to work with this and then do it for free on your free time. This is not like contributing to Wikipedia, it demands a concerted, focused effort from a number of people for an extended period time. It's not easy.

So I think it's reasonable to believe that it may never see the light of day. Or maybe it'll be released, and then we'll see. If it's good, it will be a huge achievement.

Very true.

I think the fact they have worked so long and hard on it sort of ensures it's release at some point. The thought of doing all this work, (and it looks amazing so far) and never releasing it seems like an awful end to such a mod.

That would indeed cause a fanboy tear or two to roll down my jaded face. I was so young, so vulnerable... And I fell in love with that crowbar... To see it restored would be like a homecoming.
