I'll posit that the wave of disproportionate ravings that came against the Mass Effect 2 box art, originated with an article right here on the Escapist. This, ridicolous as it sounds, got a trend going, providing one bandwagon to jump onto, for people looking for something, anything to hate, however irrelevant.

Now you're doing it again.

They should have used the front- and backcover of Game Informer, when they did that coverstory about Portal 2. One portal on the front, one portal on the back, with some great use of the contrast between the clinical Portal 1-style and the 'taken-back-by-nature'-style of Portal 2.

I'm not sure I like the idea of them focusing on the co-op...its a little disconcerting

I thought Valve would go for the Simplistic approach, when making Portal 2's cover.

Why not something simple like the portal gun just laying there.....with 2 written on it or something? You're not being unfair Andy, that does look a little ugly.

His legs. They seem so unnatural.

Underwhelminf is pretty accurate - this is a bland, cluttered cover, not really accurately portraying what the game has to offer.

Not a fan of the box art to be honest.

I can't imagine that grabbing my eye if I was in a shop.

Good job theres enough hype about to mean its not that much of an issue.

I'm a little concerned that focusing on the multiplayer aspect in the box art might be hinting at Valve focusing on multiplayer in the game as well. I loved the first one for the story of Chell and GlaDOS, well, just for GlaDOS really, and I'm looking forward to the sequel for the continuation of that story. I do not care at all about the multiplayer component and I just hope Valve aren't going to skimp on the single player part - the important part.

No Andy, I have to agree with you. With the exception of the first Left 4 Dead, I couldn't really care for any of Valve's box arts.

Having said that, it doesn't bother me so much considering Valve cranks out such good games that they could have this [http://www.vgboxart.com/boxes/PS3/29461_the_tourettes_guy_video_game.jpg] as the box are for their next game, and I wouldn't care.

Now posters, on the other hand, would be a much different story. I wouldn't have this hanging anywhere near my freaking wall.

Sorry, been listening to the remix all day :3

OT:
The first portal's box art was much, much better. I admit it would be difficult to pull off a second one that was similar, but for this they don't even seem to have been trying...

I love it, I think they chose to not show Chell because they really don't like showing her much, hell, they never even told us her name, people ripped it from the texture names.

Big deal, It's not like all of a sudden someone decides not to buy it because the box art sucks.

Here's a way to make box art:
Print off a set of boxes for the game (with all the different box art selections) and intersperse them with other games and with each other (separate tests). Ask a selection of off-the-street users to (A.), grab the Portal box (from the mixed-game set); (B.) grab the Portal box that looks the most interesting (from the Portal-only set) and (C.) grab the game that looks the most interesting (from the mixed-game set).

The first one tests recognisability. The second tests relative visual interest. The third tests off-the-shelf interest. Get a match between all three, and you have a winner!
