That's really disappointing. A top tier game just dropped a little for me.
:-| I'm sorry but that is a REALLY weak reason for thinking less of a game.

If they're going for the console market shouldn't the box cover be Chell, in a ripped 'battle-damaged' jumpsuit and high heeled heel springs, dual wielding portal guns on top of a heap of smashed sentry drones with something big exploding in the background?
Couldn't have put it better myself.

OT: It looks alright, but perhaps have GLaDOS involved somehow? Eh, I'm sure that Valve's designers are better than my armchair opinion. Besides, it's not like box art quality and game quality are at all related (See: box art for original Mega Man).

Maybe they figured box art doesn't matter much..since you know..most people should be buying it off STEAM.
My immediate reaction as well. I mean, I don't even know why they bother boxing it in the first place. You'll need to install steam anyway, right? Might as well DL it well in advance.

That kinda sucks, but I'm getting it from STEAM so it doesn't really matter.

At this point I don't think the box art has to do anything for the game, they might as well just print out the name of the game on a blank box. Everyone and their cat knows about the cake so the game won't need much advertising, and it's even more irrelevant with people buying it off steam.

Holy crap, people actually look at the box art? Here I thought it was just supposed to be the one thing standing between that game and my console.

It is certainly a well designed cover. It follows the rules of thirds very well, but i feel as though it is to linearly left to right, leading the eye away from the cover. I can see what they were going for, but I don't think it works.

I'm just excited for the game it self I could careless about the box art. That being said I don't think it's that bad.

I've read through this thread, and I can say without a doubt I like the official box art better than what almost anyone in here has suggested, lemme explain.

To those saying Chell needs to be on there: Chell is nobody. Chell is a model, never referred to, never speaks, never has any personality or background explained. This game is not about her, it's about Portal puzzles, and how you get through them, it's about YOU. I never found out her name until months after my first several playthroughs, and still didn't care. She is there for the sole purpose of when you look through a portal, she acts as a marker for where you're standing. There is no relationship between Chell and GLaDOS, it's just GLaDOS and you. Even the Valve guys have spoken on this.

To those saying GLaDOS needs to be on there: Think about why GLaDOS wasn't on the first game's boxart. If we showed her, it would give away a good deal of the story. We don't know what to expect going in the first time. All we know are a Portal gun is involved. A commentating computer voice was at first a nice goofy touch, then turned into a serious threat when we're almost moidahd later on. When we finally come face to face with this machine, we stand there staring at it for a good moment, reacting in shock, disgust, curiousity, whatever. "So, you finally found me." Whoa, that's what you look like? As for the sequel, what if she alters her appearance? Don't wanna give that away. Heck, finding her in her destroyed state should be kept to when you experience it, therefore drawing a far more emotional reaction.

To that one guy saying cake needs to be on the cover: Are you serious? Go to your room and think about what you said.

Now, why the bots? Easy, what did they gush about so much with all the reveals and showoffs in the past? The Portal Bots. They have dinstinctive personalities, they have quirks, they are new. It's a sequel, put something new on there, they'll work fine. The bot jumping through the portals is actually quite close to the simplified version that they would have used for the sequel, you can refer to Maraveno's post on page 3 for the first game's box art. Can't have one bot without the other, so in goes the second. Portal 2, two bots, nice, classy, yes. Kinda like L4D's boxart with the great amount of puns they had in there. There's a lot going on in the picture, some depth to it, maybe you'll have to think even more with portals, durhur I made a funny.

Final thoughts, look forward to the co-op, that is something to be shared with others, the single player should be kept more intimate and experience worthy is what the box art conveys to me. Sides, perhaps the back of the box will have Chell and GLaDOS for all you nitpickers. Yes the simplified idea could have worked, but that would have been too close to the original's. And yes, in the end, all it is is a boxcover art. You're not gonna pay it much mind when you're in the game.

First off, apologies to Valve: the Left 4 Dead cover was genius, really a great, great box. Not sure why it didn't click with me. I ticked off Blue Shift, OpFor, the Orange Box, the various individual OB games, but sailed right over L4D. So there has in fact been one Valve box that worked for me.

As for box art itself, sure, lots of people look at it. It's a topic that's come up before and while there are all kinds of people who think it's silly, especially with the popularity of digital distribution, for some of us the game box is a fundamental part of the experience and we appreciate (or not) the art on the front. From a sales perspective, the impact will probably vary depending on the game but I have no doubt that bad box art can have a negative impact on long-term sales once the initial rush has passed. I linked to Planescape in the original post because it's an utterly hideous package and I've always believed that one of the reasons it bombed so badly was that people were revolted by the blue ugly on the cover. A long-awaited Valve game isn't going to suffer very much from that phenomenon but lesser known titles definitely can.

Well I agree, it's underwhelming, but it's not a big deal. I think it's the prancing character between portals that makes it unappealing, personally. It takes too much focus away from the rest of the scene, which is otherwise quite good.

But eh, no point in complaining. Chances are most people won't even see it anyway.

Well, Valve were never known for giving away too much value if you bought it off in the retail shelves, like having a miserable sheet of paper instead of a humongous manual.

Valve's covers were never pretty to look at, but also were never too ugly, the last cover that I remember that made me gasp the first time I saw it was the Orange Box, but it was for it's content instead of looking at the mere cover.
This was my thoughts exactly.

The orange box's box art looked like something for an office program. Like...excel spreadsheets leap to mind.

But all my games go into a nifty CD case and the boxes get filed away, in case i want to ever trade in, so box art is "meh" to me.

Aww why not Glados? I would have bought a physical copy (opposed to Steam) if she/it was on it
