Just remember, that if valve decides to do it themselves, it'll delay whatever agme they could've spend that time working on (ep3 perhaps?)

Everything is to be a film for the greedy corporations anything to get money I suppose. But of course it could mean you're just marketing hal-life to a broader audience, maybe to people who don't like games in general and maybe theynow want to play these games, so that valve can get more money maybe it's like so too.

Valve flew those 2 brothers to their hq and said that they were blown away by their efforts and such. Valve have always been amazing at supporting their fans and ensuring that the best things get done.

it would be brilliant to see it become reality, but unfortunately, as mentioned they just don't deliver the story as well as the game itself, uwe boll isn't fantastic and he's butchered many films but for what it's worth he did a fair job with resident evil. as much as i'm a huge fan of the game series prior to 5 of course the movies weren't horrible, not amazing, but not horrible.
and also with the postal movie he delivered on some of the fans favourite game references but all in all not a fantastic movie, but at this time we have michael bay, the cg mad explosion vomiting madman that created the transformers movie, which once again wasn't great but wasn't awful.
we have uwe boll as mentioned above, and a few more names like alexandre aja, who aren't fantastic but once again make watchable movies, i think something like half-life is so well made and the story is so rich that the best way to get it across is in game form, same with world of warcraft and other blizzard titles *stares lovingly at starcraft* there is a lot of lore and back story which was told through the medium of games and books working fantastically, but because of this its a fair enough guess that they just wouldn't deliver as a movie.
its not true with lets say the lord of the rings movies book to movie is sometimes workable.
but all in all it only worked because peter jackson was a fan of lord of the rings, if somehow a director who enjoyed half-life teamed up with valve to work on a film as team then we would probably have a fantastic film. But the chances are rather slim and the budget would have to be immense so its probably a long shot unless valve release their own set of cgi movies maybe 30mins in length to tell the story part by part, kinda like the games that would work.

i do apologize for the essay, just a subject i find interesting ;)
also other things that would make a fantastic movie/movie series....
Warhammer universe 40k and warhammer fantasy.
Elder scrolls series would be fantastic.
even fear could make a half decent movie.
just my opinion anyhow :D
Uwe boll doesn't make watchable movies, granted this is opinonbased, but still the boll sucks and he shouldn't ever been let onto do movies.

I can understand the initial gut reaction to wanting to see a HL movie, but once the wow factor wears off, I have to wonder why anyone really wants one? I'd rather they make more HL games. For the money they'd spend on doing a HL movie right, they could make several games, especially in the episode format. I thought those were brilliant, but they must not have sold well, or at least not as well as tired old zombie rehash.

What a shame Valve doesn't want the episodic content done right. I don't think the Star Wars Trilogy (aka 'episodes') too this fucking long to make.
I'd suggest you read the idea for the Sandman movie they pitched to Neil Gaiman first; it's in the book "Tales from Development Hell".

Oooh god, it's bad. Like astonishingly bad. Makes Legend of Chun Li look Oscar-worthy.

Valve Time [http://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Valve_Time] exists because Valve want to do it - not just right - but brilliantly; and if it takes Duke Nukem time, then it'll be worth it.

Edit: What they could do, very effectively, is tell Eli's story...
Well.... that's alarming.

Following this logic, it must have been a good thing that Square made the Final Fantasy movie...

hmm...

I'd prefer a TF2 movie, because I loved the "Meet the ___" filmlets VALVe makes. (filmlet is a term I just made up and it means "little movie thing")

I think Half-Life will never be a movie. It falls into the same pitfall that stopped the Halo Movie: Commenting on the main character, Blomkamp: "other characters around him [...] did most of the emotional heavy lifting"

Will the movie just end 2/3 of the way through the story?

You serious? They can't even make it into a game, apparently!

Methinks Mr. Newell has a good head on his shoulders.

I think Gabe's initial idea is this best: Just don't make one. The idea that properties can naturally and easily move between media has been proven false time and again. We don't need a Half-Life movie. (Sure wouldn't mind seeing Episode 3, though.)

You would think letting the developer make the movie is a good idea...

...until you remember.

...just saying.
