If they make it, it should be in first person, like the games!
Also, Hugh Laurie as Freeman would make me extremely happy.

You could always go with something like this
Damn, I was hoping to post that first.

If it turns out like that, but obviously with a bigger budget and therefore cooler stuff, then it'll be awesome.

I'm gonna let Gordon give his opinion on this one:

I think he's gonna-

It'll be tough to make a silent protaganist in a movie.

In reading this I suddenly got the image of Valve making the movie themselves involving them casting Gabe Newell himself as Gordan Freeman. :)

It was probably due to the Max Payne referance given that one of the developers was used for Max himself in the games (not the movie). ;)

( Envisions Gabe getting ready for the movie, swinging a crowbar at training dummies, and insisting that someone in Hong Kong must specialize in crowbar fight choreography )

Sure but why?
For who?
People who want to know the story but don't like games?
Hit the nail on the head my friend, If I want to enjoy the half life story i'll do something amazing, i'll play the game and BOOM problem solved!
The game was the perfect story telling platform for the idea and movies are the perfect story telling platform for their ideas, can't we just keep them separate (there is a reason they have all been pants)

But game development companies don't make movies for a reason. Just check out any of the Final Fantasy movies that Square Enix made.

A few good video game movies I can think of was the last Final Fantasy movie, the Hitman movie wasn't so bad either. I do hope the Bioshock movie and the Warhammer 40K movie will turn out well.

I'd imagine Valve doing a good job of it. I don't think a HL movie would be too involved with the game, but rather focusing on separate events while providing extra backstory for the in-game events.

I think this is a bad idea exactly how did the mortal combat or street fighter movies add to their respective franchises

Now a system shock movie might work, Ken levine is an ex-hollywood screen writer anyway

From what I understand the movie industry has little to no interest with producing a film with any real relation to the game in question. Simply going like: "Ah, here's a game that has turned a great profit! Lets make a low-budget movie and slap the game's title onto it to get the players' attention."

I wonder how a game that is very centralized upon a mute protagonist can be properly adapted to the cinema however. You could focus on a new character entirely, but that might risk going too far away from the core material. It would seem that Sam Raimi will establish a classic protagonist into the WoW movie which I believe is a necessary choice. Since the Warcraft story is rather... Messy to say the least. We need a character that can be informed on what is what so that we are aswell from time to time.

I'm sure Valve would do a great job should they decide to go through with such a project. Problem would be to avoid people claiming it to be a "1984" rip-off.
