I don't live in Canada. All I see is a news story about a couple of over turned cars and a fire and it being called a riot. Thanks for some clarification on how it has escalated since, and yes you are being quite over defensive about it, because the post was first of all a joke. I don't really want to go up there and show Canada how to riot. That would be absurd.
Downtown Vancouver has been sealed off. Police in full riot gear and mounted police officers have been deployed. Looting and fighting everywhere. People are throwing things at police and burning police cars. Even a couple hours ago the smoke from downtown could be seen quite far away. There is reports of stabbings and the hospitals are on maximum alert.

I imagine international news organizations will have more accurate reports tomorrow, if they choose to report on the riot.

I mean come on, I know hockey is a big thing (I do live in Canada) but when the Flames lost everyone just went home sad. Why the riots?
Vancouver would have rioted weather they won or lost. That city is wound up like a spring.
Funny, I have heard that they are the mellowest place in Canada do to all the weed.

Was it not the most empty feeling though seeing the cup go to the other team.

Ya but the Flames didn't even make the playoffs lol

But in all seriousness, as a Canucks fan I was heavily disappointed when we lost 4-0. Still, despite the loss, I was very happy for Tim Thomas for getting what he earned and I was crushed when our stadium booed the Bruins. Can't people just be happy for others? Seriously?

Pretty much everything surrounding Van is like that, downtown not so much.

I'm in the same situation as some commenter.

I'm from Vancouver Island and am ashamed by these idiots. Be disappointed your team lost, sure, go home a cry even, if that's how much you care, whatever. But don't go looting banks and burning police cars...

Guys.... just be thankful that this isn't Montreal. They'd burn the whole city there if they lost the cup.
Probably not, as though Montreal is known to be a city where Police Cars all but spontaneously combust every now and again, Habs fans seem to reserve their enthusiasm for when the team wins series and cups. Oh, I'm sure there have been isolated incidents here and there, but the major newsworthy ones were definitely wins.

... except for the Richard Riots. Those ... those were just destined to happen.

Still, I'm not particularly surprised (though I wasn't previously aware of the '94 incident), as Vancouver is definitely a Hockey town. Basically take a large group of hardcore sports fans, add a liberal dose of alcohol, and a series like that and you really just need one guy to break a window or start something for the entire thing to spread like wildfire. The joys of mob-mentality, ain't it just grand?

Latest update from a friend: banks and major department stores are being looted. Cripes.
Yeah the downtown looked like a warzone on tv. I left the area with 4 minutes left in the game and pretty much as soon as the buzzer rang ppl near the jumbotron/gigatron/megatron threw on masks and started tipping cars and lighting them on fire.

Really is sad to see, since while alot of ppl weren't directly involved in the incident, alot of ppl acted like douchebags and hung around, took video, took photos and thought it would be amusing to get chased by the riot squad a few times.

Overall I think that it really just gives the world more ammunition with which to hate canucks fans (I'm originally from alberta and have to put up with EVERYONE on fb just hating, and I never knew why they were hating...)

of course all canucks fans aren't like this but at the same time, as said above calgary flames lost to the lightning in 2004 in 7 games, pretty much the same scenario but they managed to keep their cars unflipped and un on fire and their stores unlooted so I guess I just don't know

Holy shit, wow.

And I thought Bronco fans reacted bad after a loss at home...

Hopefully that Bruins fan is alright.
actually...alot of them won't be, considering several were intentionally STARTING fights, or hitting people at random.

Whew, got worried there for a second, thought that Bioware was based in Vancouver, then remembered it was Edmonton.

I've been hearing that this was started by that same Anarchist group that started trouble at the last Winter Olympics that were held there. Wouldn't surprise me.

A fire? Just a fire, a few smashed windows, and a flipped car or two? I feel like I should head on up there and help my northern neighbors figure out what a real riot is like.
I live near Vancouver (Maple Ridge) and I have friends and family living downtown. I'm watching what's happening on the news right now and I'm sorry but what constitutes a riot for you? People are injured, people've been stabbed, and I can assure you it's more than "just a fire" as there are molotov cocktails being thrown around. It's absolute chaos!

I know I'm being extremely defensive but come on... there's no need to say that.
Wow. Hope your loved ones are ok, man.

I was caught in the middle of the whole thing. Saw several cars get tipped and one get torched. My friend also got pegged in the face with a beer bottle.

We got out of there before the tear gas or the looting though.

If I lived in Vancouver I'd riot as well. Two shutout games in the playoffs? Plus the Canucks almost doubled the number of shots taken in game 7, and still lose 4-0? That's just some poor playing right there. Oh yeah, add to that Vancouver has yet to win a cup, and don't forget the alcohol! Yay alcohol!

Ugh. I live in Vancouver, and I'd just like to say I am truly disgusted with some of the people in my city.

I didn't go downtown today, I went to see it at the Surrey Central screen, and it wasn't that bad. We lost, OK. But, there ... Do you people know how bad it was? At least 10 people died. They pushed one Boston fan over an overpass and he died. I don't know if I'm just young or not because this is my first city riot ... but this is sickening. Killing human beings? I understand, I'm a fan of the Canucks too. But when you get down to it ... IT'S A GAME! A bloody game. No one deserves to die over it. The original HBC, the National Post, the Chapters, London Drugs, everything was on fire. People were looting TVs from the Best Buy. Why. I don't understand why some people would do this.

If my parents would allow me, I would be downtown tomorrow cleaning up this terrible mess.

Jeez are they all drunk? Look at them, posing in front of burning cars, with their faces clearly visible - they're none too bright that's for sure.

They look and act like barbarians. Or 5 year old kids with adult bodies. Seriously, they're acting like animals, unable to control their emotions. I have only pity for these people. Pity and disgust.
