Question: Where do you stand on Jon's mother? I lean towards the whole rhaegar/lyanna thing, but seeing as that's the most popular theory, martin will probably go with something else for the lolz
I don't really know to be honest. I thought that she was just some random noble woman- I hadn't realised it might be important to the plot. How would it be anything to do with Rhaegar or Lyanna though? You mean Jon might be their son? I guess that makes some kind of sense... such as why Ned is so reluctant to talk about it, as if anyone knew they'd try and kill him.

Handsome Jack, surprisingly. Yeah, he starts as a gloriously over the top asshole, mocking and laughing at you in a way that is too enjoyable to hate, but as the game goes on you start to really hate his ass. For me, I think the turning point from having fun with his asshole persona to just not waiting to blow a hole through the back of his skull was probably the end of the Animal Enclosure map. It only got progressively stronger from then. Pity the boss fight was so unsatisfying though.

] And that's why There Will Be Blood is the worst, most boring movie I have ever seen. :p
thats...kind of the point, it was a charachter study

the funny thing is I watched it and wondered "I don;t get it...why is he supposed to be so evil?" I honestly watched nearly the whole thing and didn't see him as all that bad except where he kind of neglects his son and of coarse his freak out at the end, I feel some of his actions can be interpreted different ways...or at least thats how I read it
I understand that it's a character study, but there should be a point to it. Why should I care about this jackass? What are you trying to say about the character?

What makes him "evil" is that he puts money and profit above all else, the neglect of his son is one of the focal points of this, because it's not even his son, it's just some guy's baby that was on the job with him. Why did he want a kid of his own? So he could travel around giving the whole "I'm a family man" shpeel so he could say "Heeeeyyy, I'm just your friendly neighborhood oil tycoon, here to make a profit off your land." He uses everyone and everything in order to make a profit. In short: it's his rampant, unapologetic greed that makes him "evil".

And what's the point? Rampant greed gets you everything you want, you'll just be an asshole for it. But you'll have a bowling alley in your house and all the milkshakes you can drink!

Even character studies should have some form of conflict for which the character does a little self reflection. In this one the guy just keeps winning, there is no true confrontation of his character to examine the flaws in his character.

OH YES! Definitely him. I just finished watching Gundam SEED the other day and yes that guy is completely unlikeable. Everything from his personality, his demeanor, to his attitude towards Coordinators (genetically engineered/modified humans), made you want to strangle him.
For the preservation of our blue and pure world!!!

Funny that the same VA who plays him in the dubbed version also does a character in MLP.

OT: I'd say Lucien from Fable II, Kessler from Infamous, Illusive Man was pretty bad too. Minister Prozen from Zoids:Chaotic Century.

I see a lot of hate for Chaotic Villains in this thread. I find that interesting.
Ugh, I wanted to smack everyone who uttered that phrase, except Azrael, I wanted to strangle him as previously mentioned.

Also Raww Le Kleuze could be filed under this as well once he abandoned all pretense of respectability and started raving like a lunatic. Not nearly to the degree of Azrael though.

Easily Saren from Mass Effect 1. First time I played through ME1 I didn't understand why he was doing what he was doing but by the time I was at Virmire I really believed he had to stop BY ANY MEANS necessary and even more so once Kaidan died. Also I was more than happy to bring both Wrex and Garrus along on the final mission, DAT scene where Shepard is like,
"Make sure he's dead!"
Then seeing Wrex walk up and shoot him right in the head with Garrus standing right beside him was like... MERICA' FUCK YEAH!!!

For everyone saying Joffery, I agree. Him, as well as Ramsay Bolton (Roose doesn't bother me so much for some reason), The Frey's in general, The Mountain that Rides, Cercei, and a few others I can't remember off the top of my head. Martin has a real talent to make us hate characters and still want to keep reading about them

Another vote for Joffrey Baratheon and the Governor from Walking Dead (comics). Joffrey for obvious reasons and the Governor because he's all kinds of terrifyingly crazy. What makes it worse is that his love and protectiveness over his community makes you wish he wasn't crazy because otherwise he'd be a stand up guy.

Also some unmentioned ones:

Trixie from Madness Combat. Seriously that stupid clown would keep resurrecting and killing Hank in the cheapest possible way, at one point he turns into a giant demon clown when dropped off a cliff. So cheap, but yet so satisfying when he's killed for good.

King Leod VII from Lost Kingdoms 2. That pansy jerk was so full of himself.

Rhulad Sengar from Tales of the Malazan Book of the Fallen series. A crazy king that wields a sword that makes him stronger every time he dies. The worst kind of jerk.

Yeah dude Le Kleuze really went off the deep end toward the end of the show. When he blew up that shuttle with the red head on it I was quite truthfully stunned. I didn't see that coming when it did. Muruta and Le Kleuze had excellent voice actors tho. The guy voicing Le Kleuze was also the enemy in the PC strategy game Homeworld 2. Gundam seed might be the best gundam out there...Gundam Seed: Destiny was pretty good too tho. If you haven't see that one yet I'd advise you check it out.

Azrael From Gundam SEED,the governer from walking dead,the illusive man,Joffrey Lannister,Cersei Lannister,Ramsey Bolton and,although not a direct villain,Daenerys Targarynen.
What I like about the Song Of Ice and fire series is that you can paint villains as anti heroes, well, except Joffrey, the snobby litle **** along with his powermad ***** of a mother.
Now,where was I? yes, you can pai t heroes as villains.Daenerys,Instead of Marching on Westeros just when here strength of her army was full, and when chaos in Westeros was high decided to try and bring order to a city with diseases, religous cults, crime and other nasty thing.
Ramsey Just sickens me,but I do like what does to Theon, hated the bastard from the minute he was introduced.
Illusive man is like a republican politician. He tries to do good, but ends up using everything to spread his agenda and power.Killing him in ME3 was really underplayed and not satisfying.
George RR martin does a great job of portraying characters and making us hate them without blatant exposition. He sets up their personalities to be hated, not just saying OMG HE KILLS PUPPIES AND KILLS KIDS AND STUFF HATE HIM HATE HIM AAAAAAAAAAAAAA.

Kai Friggin leng deserves mention. He seemed so arrogant, acting like theperfect killer, but seeing him lose against thane in hand to hand combat before he killed him cheaply made me think of him as acting like the perfect assasin, but being the brutal and skill less soldier he really was.
Seeing the bastard drown in his own blood after countless sniper shots was satisfying.

Last person to really get at me is without a doubt...

Light Yagami from Death Note.

I usually don't care much about villains. They can be exceptionally creepy and genuinely disconcerting but I never actually get myself to hate them. Yet this little fucker managed that like no-one before or after: he's an insane megalomaniac who is so utterly devoid of all empathy and so caught up in his own egocentrism that he routinely deceives, lies and murders everyone that stands in the way of this insane game of his. He doesn't even stop when it comes to family members or innocents, despite his claims to only rid the world of "evil people". He's by all means a true sociopath. And when a series does it's utmost to present a world that gives such a person real power...damn...that makes me angry.
You think Light was bad? Wait until they introduce Kiyomi Takada...

EDIT: Buck from Far Cry 3. As a rule, I despise sex slavers, but what I hate more is the people who buy sex slaves, knowing full well what a dreadful thing it is but not giving a shit. That's Buck in a nutshell.

Yeah, I still didn't really like Flay at that point but I didn't want to see her killed and it was still heartbreaking, esp. for Kira.
I have seen Destiny, but when I watched it I hadn't seen all of SEED yet so I was in the dark for part of it so I might watch it again.

The Frey family. Especially Lord Walder.

Ser Alliser Thorne and his little posse for what they did to Jon Snow.

All Lannisters except Tyrion, but especially Cersei. Jaime's not so bad really.

The Thalmor of Skyrim.

And not a villain, but: Batman. Because fuck someone who thinks that dead parents and money means they can take the law into their own hands. Self-righteous arse that he is, spending billions on a bat-style car to chase down some worthless villains. News flash Batman, kid's parents die every day, everywhere, how about donating those billions to kids and saving more lives than all your nemesis combined ever hoped to threaten. Selfish prick.

The antagonists from Assassin's Creed Brotherhood but for really terrible reasons. The Borgia kids were such massively annoying assholes that my entire motivation for finishing the game was to shut them the fuck up. Which, for the record, is not in any way a good thing.
Also! Dewey from Eureka Seven, especially with the..... creepier implications of his... Recruitment choices. Dude was really creepy, brilliantly charismatic to the public and hugely capable, a great villain.

Such a smug bastard, manipulating everyone as he sees fit, was so satisfying to watch Kain dish out a beat down on him.
Awww... I admit I have thought of Moebius too, but then in the end he's just another pawn to EG, who keeps ruining Nosgoth for reasons unknown. And EG is voiced by Tony Jay, thus impossible to hate.

My picks:

Burke from Aliens - takes a real asshole to trap a child with a face raping monster just so that he can start his own weapon industry.

Funboy and the gang in The Crow.

Jigsaw.

This one villain is from a movie I saw when I was twelve and still haven't found the name of. Just as well, 'cause it's beyond creepy. Basically this guy kidnaps a girl and stashes her in the basement 'cause he thinks they're soulmates. She somehow makes a bargain that if she stays with him for 28 days (I think) and then still wants to leave, he'll let her go. So she starts crossing off days on the brick wall while being nice to him and him being a creepy fucker that tries to Stockholm syndrome her. She starts pretending to like her towards the end and on the last evening they have dinner and it looks as if he's going to keep his word. Then the psycho pulls out and engagement ring. She tries to politely decline and asks for some time to "think about it and to discuss it with her family", but he sees through it and stuffs her back in the cellar. She catches pneumonia and dies. The movie ends with him driving his van behind another girl with similiar looks, thinking out loud that this time he found his true love. Honestly I'd have dinner with Hannibal Lector any day before sharing a continent with that disturbed ass.

Count Veger from Jak 3. Made all the worse when Jak didn't tear him at least three new assholes for what he did to Damos.

Robin hobb is really good at making you hate people you're supposed to hate... Holy shit prince Regal is a ****, god damn. I want to throttle him.

And ofcourse that emperorry dude of whom I have completely lost the name and proper title now, in The Liveship Traders trilogy. This line took the cake for me: "Rape is just something women invented to put a price on something they have an unlimited supply of."
This said to a woman who was locked up and raped daily for weeks on end, on his orders.

Him I wish to stab in the eye with pixiestix.

Well there was Queen Brahne from Final Fantasy IX.

Not only does she level entire cities with the Eidolons and black mages, she also attempted to have her own daughter executed after extracting the eidolons from her.

By the time I revisited Lindblum after she attacked it and saw how the survivors were treating Vivi for something he didn't even do, I found myself absolutely loathing Queen Brahne.

But then, when she got mortally wounded by Kuja and Bahamut at the end of Disc 2, I actually felt sad for her and Garnet. In the end, despite all the things the Queen had done, Garnet still saw her as her mother, and the queen ultimately realized all the horrible things she had done and apologized to her before dying.

Yeah, Team Joffrey here. I haven't been so righteously incensed against a fictitious character since my teenage years. Guy makes me want to reach out through the pages and/or TV screen and strangle him to death in front of his own damn court's constituents. It's absolutely brilliant. Awesome characterization.

As a kid, I really hated Simon Rawnson from the Song of Albion cycle. That was basically the last great set of books Stephen Lawhead wrote before going all Christian. Rawnson figures poisoning a Neolithic society with Monarchic ideals will allow him to go on some sort of self-styled kingly power trip, even as Albion's chieftains value passing the right of succession based on the individual tribe members' worth.

Handsome Jack Handsome Jack Handsome Jack. He was brilliant! Best villain since Heath's Joker. The contrast between being funny and being a horrible person was amazingly well done. And after one of his most hideous acts he still managed to make me laugh with all the Eridium Blight quests like checking on his grandma and killing myself.
