I think a point has been missed here. the funny thing is I watched it and wondered "I don;t get it...why is he supposed to be so evil?" I honestly watched nearly the whole thing and didn't see him as all that bad except where he kind of neglects his son and of coarse his freak out at the end, I feel some of his actions can be interpreted different ways...or at least thats how I read it
What makes him "evil" is that he puts money and profit above all else, the neglect of his son is one of the focal points of this, because it's not even his son, it's just some guy's baby that was on the job with him. Why did he want a kid of his own? So he could travel around giving the whole "I'm a family man" shpeel so he could say "Heeeeyyy, I'm just your friendly neighborhood oil tycoon, here to make a profit off your land." He uses everyone and everything in order to make a profit. In short: it's his rampant, unapologetic greed that makes him "evil".
And what's the point? Rampant greed gets you everything you want, you'll just be an asshole for it. But you'll have a bowling alley in your house and all the milkshakes you can drink!
Even character studies should have some form of conflict for which the character does a little self reflection. In this one the guy just keeps winning, there is no true confrontation of his character to examine the flaws in his character.
It's rather clear at the end that Plainview is not a happy man. He may have bowling alleys and milkshakes, but the kind of bitterness he displays is not the kind of thing associated with happy human beings. He's really rather pathetic, and his last words ("I'm finished") suggest that he knows that the fun he just had is probably the last he'll ever have, and he's wondering if it was really that good of a trade.
As for journeys, I think a point was also missed: Plainview doesn't change, and remains a miserable, pathetic, self-destructive human being because of it. His adopted son H.W., on the other hand does change, and washes his hands of Plainview as Plainview attempts to wash his hands of H.W. The victor and closest thing to a hero in the movie is H.W.

Edgar Ross, Red Dead Redemption. A capricious thug who honestly believes his badge, tie, and job make him a good guy. Berates Marston every chance he gets for his past crimes, but is perfectly willing to throw away dozens of lives and destroy many others in the process of taking him out, after Marston has tried to leave that life behind.
Ambassador Udina, Mass Effect. I have not played ME3, but so far Udina has been diligently working against the interests of his own species. He could be forgiven for his first unwitting betrayal, but is completely unapologetic after it was proven that he could not have been more wrong, and learns nothing from his past mistakes.
General Randall, Prototype. He's been preparing for 40 years to do what he has to in order to protect his country... from a threat he helped create, and that he could have eliminated at any time during those 40 years. Its his smug patriotism against a danger that he has been not only responsible for but actively making worse, and his inability to recognize that he is the real problem, that is so infuriating.
Literature:
Edouard De Gex, the Baroque Cycle. An 18th Century Jesuit Priest who sees the fall of aristocracy and the success of the Enlightenment as moral degeneracy, yet is captured by the Inquisition in Mexico while undercover (as a Jew or Protestant, can't remember which) and later comments that his treatment at the hands of his torturers made him decide that the Mexican inquisition is a bit lax. He suggests that if he gets the opportunity he'd like to see to it that they do a "proper" job of things. Yikes.
Handsome Jack from Borderlands 2. I love him because I hate his guts, and if he was a real person, I'd probably be fighting off the urge to strangle him to death.
Kessler didn't really make a lot of sense though, he could have easily stopped almost if not all of those future events from happening, it was one of the dumbest plot twists I've seen in a game, and is only further ruined in its sequel.Professor Lupin Madblood said:

The whole rhaegar/lyanna thing comes from the Ned's flashback to the tower of joy, which involves three of the then kingsguard protecting a stronghold with no one other than lyanna supposedly inside, which would make sense if there was a royal son being born. And then ned mentions how she died in a bed full of blood, and he made some mysterious promise to her (that no one but howland reed knows of), then ned comes back to the north with a bastard son, completely out of character. It's really just a fan theory, but a lot of it seems to fit, and it's fairly popular.

After the nuke exploding in the CoD4 mission 'Shock and Awe' were 30,000 US troops were killed, it pretty much changed him and made him feel that the US was weak and he wanted to restore the USA's reputation as a global power and how does he plan to achieve this boys and girls, by allying himself with international terrorist, Vladimir Makarov and placing one of his own men with him to carrying out a terrorist attack at a Russian Airport killing hundreds of people and then making it look like the US carried it out which led to Russia invading America thereby kickstarting World War III and as a result, Sheppard was put in charge of America defense and given a blank cheque for any resources. So let me get this straight, you caused the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people just because you're butthurt that the America's ego trip has ended *puts down controller, walks outside and screams "I'm going to kill you, you fucking bastard"*
Of course that's only the tip of the iceberg on how much I hate Sheppard
He kills Roach and Ghost after finding information linking him to Makarov and orders that all Task Force 141 be killed so as to cement his position as a war hero and to also frame Price and Soap as war criminals
It just made it all the more satisfying when you kill him

Ramsay Snow, Bolton's bastard from "Game of Thrones". I literally wanted to do to him everything he ever did to anybody else.
The Elder God from 'Legacy of Kain' series, this patronizing, arrogant attitude done via magnificent voice of late Tony Jay. That creature fed on souls from the whole world, directly or indirectly stagnating said world, and when one of the nations refused to worship it, it instigated a war so that nation can be destroyed. The most entitled parasite I ever saw.
Speaking of entitled parasites, another one is Prince LaCroix from VtM Bloodlines game. While his deeds aren't that horrendous comparatively to other villains, I got an extreme satisfaction choosing option "F*ck you" at the end.
From literature: Ramona Norville, from Stephen King's "Full Night, No Stars" book. She is a mother of serial rapist and murderer and directly supplied her son with victims for years, with total disregard to human life and dignity.
Don Richardo from "The Shadow of the Wind" by Carlos Zafon and Inspector Fumero from the same book. First one actually let his daughter die from childbirth while listening to her pleas from behind a locked door, second one was a sick bastard that would (very probably, but still) make even Ramsay Snow cringe.

Nicol Bolas is like the only character I can think of who would sound like a jerk no matter what he does. Even if all he did was give you a back rub, feed you ice cream, and say have a nice day.

Since you're leaping over the usual targets, allow me to offer two of my own. One I am surprised hasn't been mentioned, and the other you might not have heard of.
First, the obvious one.
You son of a *****. I've noticed that you have fans for all the villains in Star Wars, except for Tarkin. You can sympathize with Piett or Needa, or enjoy the badass Vader or cackling Emperor, but I don't think anyone is a fan of Governor Wilhuff Tarkin. Nothing but pure malevolent intent that is masked by an aristocratic smirk that you just want to punch.
