Well we just got 2 feet in the span of 24 hours here in Edmonton, Ab, Canada and I'm going to school tomorrow so it looks like we don't shut down for much.
BROTHER!

And it's a shame, because my bus comes in a twenty minute window. Meaning I stand outside with no shelter for up to twenty minutes.

Note: Calling in the army may be an exageration for a few inches, but some places do do it. However, places that close down over a few inches is just as funny.
Not really. In most cases it is because neither the people nor the government have the resources (experience, plows, salt trucks, etc) necessary to properly manage the situation. In my old hometown, snow was common enough that it takes a pretty bad storm to shut anything down. In Austin however, snow of any sort would virtually paralyze the city as it doesn't have significant resources necessary to sort out the situation since getting snow in the city is so very, very rare (years pass between snowstorms).

i live in canada, snow's pretty much normal everywhere i think, my school doesn't close, sometimes the roads are so bad that the busses won't run, the students are expected to walk... across a buisy highway... because it's safer.

Never heard of a school closing due to snow in the entire country (Sweden). In general our system for keeping the roads clear are good and quick to respond so it's usually not much of a problem.

Pittsburgh, and our administration is so dam stingy with our snow days. 4 inches and 10 degrees and we just barley got a 2 hour delay.

Well, currently I live in Virgina. We got out of school an hour early due to snowfall, even though it was only about and inch. So far it looks like we'll be getting a delay tomorrow as well. However, our superintendent is odd. He cares more about ice as opposed to snow.

I lived in Alaska a few years back, so it's just laughable to see everyone freak out over an inch of snow.
Hey, cool! (No pun intended) Prince William got snowed out, too.
The county site is acting up, so there's no way to tell about school tomorrow.
Good to know there's other Virginian escapists out here, too.
Wait, you're in Prince William? So am I! Don't suppose you go to Stonewall Jackson?
No, Bull Run, but that's all I'm gonna say, this being the internet and all.
Have a nice snow day tomorrow! :)

I live in Texas if we get a foot of snow no one will show up for work or to school. Why you might ask because we will all be playing in the snow.

I live in Vermont. In the hilly/mountainous parts, and we get lots of snow. If its below 4 feet, there's school.
I'm in Vermont too, and they were always so schizo about cancelling school. One day, we'd get like a dusting and close the schools and the next, we'd have a blizzard and schools would stay open.

Here in Maine, our schools laugh in the face of snow and press on through almost anything (although there was one time when school got cancelled due to a forecasted blizzard that never actually happened... we ended up getting a beautiful and sunny day off from school.

When I was a little kid, I lived in Virginia, where a single inch of snow was enough to stall the whole city for at least a day.

I live on the northen tip of the main island of japan, its snowed a little bit here, but nobody's canceled anything.
Though, when winter REALLY gets going, there's going to be problems. 12 annual (at least) feet a year of snow, and no official japanese road clearing services? yeah, thats gonna suck. Gonna need to buy snowshoes to get to work.

I'll be honest, I have never experienced that the schools have had to close because of snow where I live, Norway, even though we do get lots of snow.

Appearantly there is a rule though if the school can't heat the classroom up to atleast 18 degrees celsius, 64.4 ºF, the students are allowed to leave.

And usually outside where I live it's -4 ºF to -13 ºF

But at my grandparents who live 2 hours away, they had -29.2 ºF and tons of snow xD
Dang, where do they live? I rarely get to see anything below -13F where I live. Is Kirkenes a far off guess?

OT: As he said, Norway doesn't close schools based on weather, and well, I don't really think any of those who get a lot of snow do, it's natural so we don't think of it as a crisis. Of course if you go to Oslo they'll usually flip out if there's snow even though it's December...

Awesome, you get a year where you spend the time in tents?

Well, the last time there was enough snow for any sort of accumulation on the ground in Florida was 1977, so I've never had a snow day. I think if we ever had so much as a centimeter on the ground, no matter what the school board said, everyone would stay home to play in the snow. We do, however, have storm days.

Storm days absolutely suck, because we only get them if a hurricane or a pretty solid tropical storm is coming through, and we have to make them up by taking days out of Thanksgiving break. When students are home for a storm day, they don't get to play. Instead, they either help prepare the house for the storm, picking easily blown objects up out of the yard and so on, or they evacuate the area. Nine times out of ten, the storm isn't bad enough to do much more than blow down some tree branches and bring some much needed rain, but that one in ten chance is horrible when it hits. I remember 2004, when we had four major hurricanes in one year, and we were without power at my house for over a week, twice. We got off lucky; a lot of people lost their home entirely, and you couldn't drive through a single neighborhood without seeing at least one blue tarp that had temporarily replaced a roof. Some areas were more like a sea of tarps. I envy you people who get snow days instead of storm days.

I live in Michigan, and we get heavy snow and ice all of the time, and our city is facing financial problems, so they aren't salting the roads anymore, resulting in more accidents.

My school is absolutely terrible with snow days. Just this Monday, there was snow, ice and coldness to the point where 90% of the schools in our area closed. Ours, being the "better" school that "doesn't let some snow get in the way of education," remained open. Almost 25% of the school was absent because the horrible weather conditions made it too unsafe for people who had to walk or drive long a distance. There were even many teachers that weren't there, and many of them that were there said we should have had a snow day.

So, most of my classes either involved sitting around and doing nothing, reviewing stuff, or doing substitute teacher busy work. Such a productive, educational day, right?

I live in the middle of canada. -30 is normal. THE ONLY TIME i ever remember the school closing was because the storm was so bad you could not see a foot infront of you.
