I'm watching spaceballs, literally right now, on the Syfy (Fucking stupid name) channel and each time a character says shit it has been blanked out or the line removed entirely. I wouldn't think much of it but there is a scene where John Candy gives a pair of guards the finger (flips the bird or your phrase of choice) and it was right there plain as day. Maybe I'm weird but I would consider giving the finger to be higher on the offensiveness scale than saying shit anyday.

Anyone else seen weirdly censored media that removed small things and left the big stuff?

I'm not really sure about removing the little and leaving the big stuff...

But if you watch the DVDs of Futurama the cast say 'Bastard' quite a lot and it's removed from the TV version.

Like how sometimes when "asshole" gets blocked they bleep out the "hole" part?

Its even funnier when the characters say "ass" all the time and it never gets blocked.

Not much as censorship is it is regional differences, but look at the game boxes for the american and Japanese releases of Kirby games.

I had recorded Outlaw Star on Cartoon Network, then later bought it on DVD. There's a scene where they leave in the word "bastard" but in that same episode, they edit every scene where one of the characters licks his lips so that all you see is a static image while he delivers his lines. I was like "What the fuck?"

The most annoying kind of censorship (besides anything by 4kids) is when they change the word instead of bleeping it.

Some idiot UK politician banned every episode with Tom & Jerry seen smoking in them. They said it was "Free advertising for large cigarette companies." In itself, this is a pretty dumb thing, mostly because they smoke cigars the majority of the time, and secondly, I seriously doubt Tom & Jerry is influencing people to smoke. I also hate it when soaps can say ***** and bastard all the time, and even arse, whereas with something American like Two and a half men, ass is bleeped out all the time. Frustrates me.

The scariest thing about censorship is that its someone you don't know deciding whats good and whats bad for you. And that being said I find most censorship to be stupid especially in the MGMT video for Flash Delirium they censor the word tit when you can't even hear it in the first place because they sing the lines so fast.

I don't really remember them smoking more than two or three times and even then they were celebrating something. It's rare that a 5 year old finds themself with a box of cubans.

Know what's even better? Banning cigarette advertising has helped tobacco companies. Now smoking is even more taboo, ergo cool, so more teens are smoking earlier AND they aren't spending any money on advertising to do it. They are literally getting greater profit from doing less than they ever did.

I have never laughed harder than when I watched "Annalise This" on TV. They didn't blank out the words, they replaced them. I've never been so aware of just how much swearing there is in a movie and what they replaced it with just made me laugh. I can't think of any examples right now, but it was funny.

I remember sitting on a plane and watching "Death Race". It involves people shooting each other up, resulting in lots of blood, yet they seemed to think an innocent child stumbling across it would be shocked at the word '*****', which was changed to 'witch'. This really seemed to majorly miss the point.

I couldn't agree more. I didn't really htink 3-10 year olds would have been their target market, but hey, maybe we're just a little more intelligent than the average censorship executive. I agree on the banning advertising thing too.

That's rampant in music too. In Every Time I Die's We'rewolf video they changed "motherfuckers" to "lucky ladies". D:

Those Kirby ones ARE interesting and once again highlight America's bizarre fascination with anger and violence.
I hate how in the Ace Attorney series (Phoenix Wright, Miles Edgeworth et al) you get to hear gruesome details about how people are horribly blugeoned, stabbed and/or shot to death, but when a character (all over legal drinking age) enjoy a refreshing glass of wine, it's changed to grape juice. Like really? Even Harvest Moon, one of the tamest series ever made, stopped that ridiculous bit of censorship after the first game.
