I'm watching spaceballs, literally right now, on the Syfy (Fucking stupid name) channel and each time a character says shit it has been blanked out or the line removed entirely.
Didn't southpark have an entire episode dedicated to the word 'shit?'
I don't understand why Spaceballs has it censored then have Southpark say shit 142 (or however many times) times without a single bleep?
It's not so much censoring the word shit (they also censored *****) since it started a 6:10 I can accept watershed rules, it's the fact that they censored shit and left in the part where he gives the finger.

in monsterhunter tri they censor the word behind, I think it is the german equivalent of saying ass but for some reason its censored in the na version which means you cant says "after can we do so and so" always comes out like "****** can we do so and so"

but cigars?

Is that level of censorship in 4kids only or just an example of US censoring in general?
I knew somebody would say 4kids as soon as I saw this topic, the blood, cigarettes, wine e.c.t is remove because the dubbing was intended to make the show FOR KIDS not for teenagers, so i dont think you really should have a right to complain, if you were 5-10 and complaining then your point should be accepted.

I was watching an episode of funniest home videos the other day and in one of the clips some guy was smoking so they just blurred out his hand. Odd considering the fact that they show grievous bodily harm, dangerous stunts, vomit, poo, wee and animals humping.

And I remember a few years ago they were censoring the word sex.

But I've grown use to it, I live in Australia for crying out loud, where it seems like no politician wants to take a joke, people viciously savage our own celebrities then act shocked and defensive when others do it in jest and think any amount of blood will turn (even zombie blood...I'M STILL MAD ABOUT THAT!) our children into mass murderers but then try to justify all this with censorship, oddly holier-than-thou considering the fact that we were built upon cut-throats, convicts and corpses of natives.

Umm, but the show was -already- made 'for kids', or at least, younger teens. It's more a case of different value systems. Not that mind you I agree on the western take on it, as, I believe within reason, even shows aimed at kids shouldn't remove blood, fear, or alcohol/cigarettes, and should make use of these things where appropriate.

Anyway, as for weird cases of censorship, comics aimed at adults take an odd slant on it, where, you'll end up with a comic book that clearly states that it has explicit content on the cover, like the awesome Empowered, and is stuffed to the gills with innuendo and just -barely- sex scenes, and yet, any and all instances of the word f**k or s**t (though I think it's just f**k with Emp) are blurped out. Now, this is fair enough when it's for comedic value, and yeah, swearing isn't something that's going to make or break a comic, but it's just strange.

As for censorship in general, isn't it funny that books are rarely banned any more? (Not that that was ever a good thing), but they don't even have any kind of code or ratings system, not like games are forced under. I'm wondering, given that that's almost exactly the same crap the music industry had to deal with, that whole 'Parental Advisory' stuff, though, they still have to slap that sticker on them, will games be able to get past all that someday?

censorship WITHIN porn, a little redundant dontcha think?
And also hampers enjoyment. Very counter-productive.
No, alot of the time with censorship within porn is because they want you to pay to see the entire thing. This ends up being productive for the website because in order to fully enjoy it you have to pay.
Or because of the culture (i.e. Japan)

Awwwe, that sucks about Spaceballs because they take out one of my favorite lines. The part where they are "combing" the desert and they are asking if they have found anything yet. "Nope. Nothing here." Then they get to the guys with the hair pick and he says, "We ain't found SHIT!" They way he says it cracks me up every time. And you won't get to see it :(
Oh hey, you can see it here

As for the OT question, I guess this:

All censorship is weird censorship.
I had a teacher back in high school that would say "vomit" as an expletive instead of shit. Because shit was a "bad" word and vomit wasn't. So it would be less offensive. But I and some friends thought that this had the opposite effect. We thought that saying vomit all the time rather than shit was more bothersome (if at all). Because nobody else used the phrase "Oh vomit," and "oh shit" is a very common phrase they convey a different message and impact. Shit is so commonly used as an expletive that when I hear it I more often think "something bad happened, someone made a mistake, got hurt, etc." (which is the relevant meaning and intended information to be conveyed), and less often I think "someone is talking about a steaming pile of feces" (which is the original meaning of the word). So when my teacher would say "oh vomit" it would evoke thoughts of gross immagery in my mind, because that's what the word vomit refers to, a foul smelling soupy puddle of chunks of halfdigested food mixed in with bile, or the action of puking and spewing out such contents, splashing it on the floor. So ironically by the very usage of "shit" as a "bad" word, it actually becomes less offensive than the attempts at censorship that use "not bad" words to replace it.
A bottom burp is infinitely worse than a fart.

If they put age regulations on literature then your school would have nothing to teach you.

Well, considering that one of the characters shown smoking a cigar(or two) is named Smoker and has eaten a Devil Fruit that allows him to become smoke, it works either way for him.

Comedy Central adverts for "Austin Powers 2, the spy that £$%&ed me"

CC is the worst at censoring on UK channels, I mean, censoring Shagged, seriously? Why??

And scrubs on channel 4 cuts out the occational swear word, but on CC they cut out people saying the word ass? I mean, how can ass need to be censored, even after watershed?

Also, constantly find German censorship a bit funny, they don't care if you see hardcore porn at a young age, but heavens forbid you see a gun, blood or comical violence!!

Yeah, though, they did change his name in the english Dub to 'Chaser', for all the sense that makes.

Look at this comic I found about 4kids:

I see truth in this. I watched one episode of Magical DoReMi, and found the voices to not fit, didn't understand why the music had to be changed, and liked the japanese names better.
FUNimation seems at least a little better.
