Listen, there is nothing more fun than a lone genestealer taking down land raider.

Great, yet simple, to paint, and always a hoot in battle, you have such a rage of choice it becomes almost a billion armies in one. Conversion is limitless in possibility, fun factor is sky high....

And there's nothing like filling the board when your opposition has 4 squads and going... "Let me grab my other box..."

Oh, the hilarity.
Well I will keep it in mind at least, as a possibility, and have another chat with the nice folks down at Sydney GW about it.

Personally, the best way to choose an army if you're just starting out in the game, is to simply pick the one you think looks/is cool.
That way you are having fun starting your collection and building your army.
It may not be the "best" choice, but it's one you'll be happy with.

i like the Black Templar... BURN THE UNCLEAN!

they hate pretty much anything not human... hell they even hate human psychers...

i like to think of them as british peasants, "we've found a witch, may we burn her?"

JUST AS A WARNING
Warhammer is very very very very very expensive and you'll find yourself losing money fast as your force expands.
e.g. 30 pounds for this:

The average Warhammer 40K army (assuming about 1700 points) is going to set you back ?200 or so (170 pounds give or take). That is, if you use mainly plastic models, because the metal ones are considerably more expensive on a per model basis. Luckily more and more is available in plastic these days.

That is not counting hobby materials ofcourse. (paints and such can add up quite fast too)

It seems you already pretty much made up your mind about what you're going to buy.
Good choice with black templars, i'm not a space marine fan but they do kick some ass against
all other races.

Also a good choice on tau, i play them myself and they can blast everything away if used properly.

I know, there's a reason I'm sitting on 2 armies, more army books and codices than I care to count and a very full paint tray.

*Appears in a blaze of artillery fire*

Good day. I am Fondant, Imperial Guard commander extraordinary and general killer of nasty things (tyranids, space marines.... actually, pretty much anything.)

Now, before Joe continues to try and convince you that somehow his meagre swarm of bugs can somehow defeat the Imperium of Man.... presumably by boring them all to death, because they haven't a hope in hells chance in combat.

Take for example: The Imperial Guard. I can field approximately.... six special weapons (4 flamers, 2 grenade launchers) and two heavy weapons (missiles prefered) in a single troops choice. A minium troops choice (the equivalent of a five-man squad.

I can drop ordanance templates from the sky.

I can field a flamer with a 24" range, S6, AP4 and the ability to cover an entire squad.

I can sit a Griffon behind terrain and pieplate over it S6 AP4 shells. For 75 points in total.

Carnifexes? A veteran squad with three meltaguns, a plasma pistol and some heavy weapons fire will see those buggers off.

Gaunts: Two words: Heavy Bolter.

Raveners: Well, if you want to get in to rapid fire range faster....

Lictors: Are you going after my heavy weapons? If not, then kiss goodbye to them bugs.

I don't need tanks. I can fight and kill any enemy faction purely with infantry.

Sure, they're nearly as hard to learn with as DE. But they've got guts, and they've got guns.

So bring your swarms Joe. I shall bring the might of the Imperial Guard.

Yeah, the Imperial Guard definetly has the most soul of all factions. Space Marines have big armour to hide behind but all a guardsman has is his trusty Lasgun.

Why play it at all? Why not just spend the night with your companion cube by the fireside...
With cake.

Yes there is. I witnessed a Guard player take out a Terminator-filled Land Raider with one shot from a Basilisk... and got the Ordnance uber-kill. That was something like 700 points wiped out with a single shot.

Y'can't leave all your trust in armour when facing Guard.

Ach, much as I hate to admit it, I've been going over the GW site, and have to say I'm slowly starting to fall for the Nids. The cool models, the stunning conversions (I have fallen in love with the Death Beatle), the focus on absolute destruction... I'm not saying I'm going to get back into the hobby...

...But if I were to...
*slap*
Snap out of it j-e-f-f-e-r-s! Look away from the light! That way lies madness and ruin.
