Just got back from the GW.

Ended up picking up the following;

Paint/Glue/Bla/Essentials

Rulebook.

Necron/Tau/Black Templar/Daemon Hunter/IG Codexes

A 1000 Point Black Templar/Grey Knight army. With Dreads and Terminators

A 1000 Point Tau Army - Primarily Mechanized

3000 Points worth of Necrons

And another 1500 of IG.
Including (but not limited to) a Baneblade, 2 Basilisks, a Leman-Russ, and 1 Chimera

Along with the 'sets' of armies I have several extra units that I can exchange here and there.

Total cost to me: $700 USD

Just wanted to say thank you again to everyone who helped my decisions. I'm actually painting the Necrons right now, and I must say; I'm loving their turnout.

I've been painting for most of the day so far. But I was wondering - are there any Necron players out there that can share some wisdom with me?

I feel that since they'll be the first army I complete, I'll probably play with them first. But I would like to hear some insight as to 'How they roll' so to speak.

Is it true that GW have made the baneblade PLASTIC now? And less than £400?

EDIT: Shit, $700!!
Is that IT?
Man, to buy that here you'd need almost £700.

If you read back far enough, you'd see that I went in with a buddy of mine who works at GW. So I got a (very) nice deal.

And yes..it's plastic. But I'm glad - because it was cheaper that way.

To Shatner: No sir. I just happened to have a large chunk of reserve in my "Hobby" account. That was merely a small dent in the account.

I've been putting away the equivalent of $100/month every month since I was 14. And that was 6 years ago.

I mostly played Fantasy Battles, but when i did play 40k i had 2 armies, 1 Imperial Guards and 1 Tyranids, and of those i'd have to say the Tyranids are the easiest one, not alot of special rules, pretty straight forward tactics, its basicly slaughter the opponent before you die, so you can play them without any major tactics and just have a laugh, Imperial Guards arent hard them either, but seeing as they consist of Alot of Tanks and Artillery, you need to know the Shooting phase rules very well, and you also need more tactics when it comes to what to pwn and such, so my tip is:

Start with Tyranids, they are straight forward, and can become really powerful once you've learned some tactics and tips.

I think Necrons are too easy to break. Daemonhunters will have no trouble bringing down your tough units because this is what they were built for. Chaos too, if they have the presence of mind to field some Berzerkers or an uber Daemon Prince. Space Marines can just bait them, Imperial Guard will just shell them (Basilisks and their 128" range). Some of their units can Deep Strike but usually its laughable.

Can't give much advice on playing them. I think they need to be fixed soon; they're a bit underpowered now with all the changes in other codices. Takes a very tactical mind to play Necrons well.

Agreed. I usually go with one army and stick to it, but you have enough for 3. That's pretty cool.

As some very wise person said near the top of this thread, the Tyrannids a lot of time and knowledge, don't get me wrong, once you know what you're doing you can really start shredding your opponents into tiny pieces. The thing is that it does take time and patience to get the hang of using them well. I'd go with the Space Marines for first use, they don't have too many special rules and make a decent force for beginners, and also for some more experienced players as well.

never been an impy goo fan to be honest, other than the artillery. one of the guys at GW was pushing daemons, which sounded interesting, but id rather has a chaos army that included daemons (or daemonettes anyway). 'nids are a possibility, but i like to have a backstory to my army, makes battles more fun (thats why my SM army was a chapter of my own devising rather than one of the main ones- a rogue chapter at that). cant get that with 'nids.

I've been kicking around the idea of a traitorous group of deserters from the Space Wolves 13th Company of The Wulfen. I good use the Wulfen as a special kind of Posessed squad and remove the Wolf Priests completely, use Chaos Hounds for Fenris wolves etc...

Of course you can. I myself, having browsed the Tyranid gallery on the GW site, have come up with my ideal Tyranid Army- Hive Fleet Gunganir. First discovered in the wastes of Alakron V by an Imperial mining crew (who they devoured, naturally), they have since escaped the planet's confines, and now roam the galaxy, consuming all in their path. Led by an unnaturally ferocious tyrant, whom the Inquisition have named 'the Hairy Tyrant' due to its un-tyranid like mane of hair, they are one of the most dangerous enemies of the Imperium, and have slaughtered all forces sent to exterminate them.

See, not so difficult. While I was browsing the Nid section, I even came up with basic conversion designs for my nids... converting a Carnifex into a Death Beetle, Using left-over Carnifex bits and Tyrant Guard parts (and plenty of green stuff) to make a Tyrant that doesn't look sucky, re-jigging the Lictor using Hormagaunt parts and a Carnifex carapace, adding some extra-legs and a Hormagaunt head (and Predator style dreads) to a Zoanthrope...

... what? This is all still hypothetical. Don't look that way at me.
Yeah, but no real characterisation, or motivation beyond "See something = eat it"
