Finished the gauntlet towers in MK11. Wasn’t as interesting as the MK9 challenge towers but oh well. The konsumables made most of the really tough ones pretty trivial but the challenge grind was acquiring them from the krypt or match wins. I hope if there’s another game they put less focus on gimmicks like this and stick to the actual fighting, which is what’s actually engaging.

Now I’ll probably go back to RDR2 in a final push to nab the last couple trophies. At least deadeye makes most of these mission challenges - other than the timed stuff - easy enough.

Today was demo day. Played two.

The Shore
Walking simulator lovecraftian horror game, tho it does have a few brief action bits. I also like the moody environment and music. It does somewhat successfully set the tone. But yeah, other than that, pretty standard walking simulator stuff. Go to a place, pick up item, some dude narrates the plot, use item in different place, more narration. I have a feeling this is a first effort for the dev, since it comes across a bit amateurish at times in stuff like voice acting and general polish and because it runs like garbage, which I noticed is very common when UE4 is used by inexperienced teams.

Monster Hunter Rise
Took me a while to relearn how to use my favorite weapon (Charge Blade), but yeah, got into beating the crap out of some monsters with style. Other than that, yeah, it's World, but with a bunch new stuff and some ideas further refined like the grappling hook mechanic and mounting monsters. You get also get a doggo and a cate now, and you can ride the doggo! Anyway, it's on Switch, so it obviously doesn't look as nice as World, but I can dig the feudal Japan vibe it has going. RE Engine putting in work. It's 30fps with dips tho, and I do miss the responsiveness I got playing MHW on pc. Supposedly Rise is also coming to pc. If yes, I'll probably get that version.

Well, when your jet fighter can carry something up to and including 100 missles(not counting the special ones), why not? That's approaching the number of missiles an Ohio Class SSGN can carry(154 cruise missiles plus torpedos) and the submarine doesn't have to fly.
It's better than that actually; you start with over 180 standard missiles, though subs can fly, they just don't have to.
Yeah, its one of the fun things about arcade air combat games. Although I was disappointed they didn't really give the f-14 phoenix missiles. One of the things that made the f-14 so cool aside from its swivel wings was the phoenix missile and how the plane was designed to be able to launch all 6 phoenix missiles at once at various targets.
They did actually, if you load up all the hardpoints with the multi-lock missiles, you end up being able to lock on up to six different targets.

I got up to the elevator with the train on it in Resident Evil 2, but for the life of me (or rather, the life of Claire) I can't figure out how I'm supposed to avoid G's attacks. The space the boss fight takes place in isn't large enough to get around him, and though he only has a couple of attacks, they come out extremely quickly, hit over a wide range, and his combo deals pretty significant damage - and he has a lot of health and almost never staggers, so I take a lot of hits in the process of trying to deal them out and die.

Is there some trick to this that I don't know about, or do I need to go back to the police station to grab some more green herbs that I might've left behind?

Edit: So, apparently it was 'use the flame rounds from the train'. Time for the laboratory, I guess. Fight was definitely not as frustrating in the remake though.

But what is this garbage storyline? Literally why the fuck weren't they joking about making a "Doomverse" back at Quakecon?
I don't know about any jokes, but a few points:

a) The idea of Doom being part of a shared universe is one that goes back decades, what with Doomguy apparently being the grandson of B.J. or something, and Commander Keen being someone's relative. I don't know how seriously it was taken, and few would take it seriously now, but the idea of Doom being part of an "Id multiverse" isn't a new one.

b) The Quake Champions comic references the "Hellverse," and if we go by the game itself, we have the likes of Doomguy and B.J. among various other characters who herald from different worlds/dimensions as well.

c) Even if they were joking about a "Doomverse," Doom 2016 kind of hints it's in the same continuity as the Doom 1>Doom 64 one. Poorly, I might add, as the game's story is a mess, but it's there.

Doom 2016's story worked great, because it wasn't taking itself seriously.
You're right that it didn't take itself seriously. I disagree that made it "great," or it was even "good," period.

Doom 2016's story is a mess. Its worldbuilding is a mess. It's an actual regression from Doom 3. And among everything else, there's a sense of keepaway on the narrative front. That most people at Id didn't care about story, but they allowed people to work on a codex, only for the codex and everything else having the feeling of making things up as they went along. In Doom Eternal, its plot and worldbuilding is clearly planned. This is obvious as soon as we meet the Khan Maykr. Doomguy knows who she is, we don't, but by the time she's killed, we understand exactly why Doomguy hates her so much. Doom 2016 has barely any of this. The mentions of Argent D'Nur and the Night Sentinels for example come right before those things are introduced. Even if Doom 2016 had a plan for its world and plot, it's a poorly executed one.

But Eternal is trying to be serious about its story for whatever reason. It's got a lot of cutscenes with one note characters nobody gives a shit about.
I care about them. :(

It wastes time throwing around one cliche line after the other, and unlike in 2016 where Doomguy just fucks off and goes and kills demons, here we gotta stand around and wait for whoever the fuck this is to finish throwing threats/sucking our dicks so we can get back to the good stuff.
Doom 2016 did the same thing. The only difference was that Doomguy didn't care what was going on, but you still needed to go through cutscenes. Certainly that causd disconnect for me, in that I wanted to know what was going on, but the character I was playing as didn't.

Literally why give Doomguy an elaborate backstory? In 2016 he was a fucking force of nature. It didn't matter where he came from, only that he's an unstoppable entity of pure rage that has been killing demons in Hell for potential eons.
First, I don't know what we lose by giving Doomguy a backstory. He had a backstory in the very first game - an extremely basic one, but it was there. Second, Doom 2016 does give backstory. Vague, hinted at backstory that I suspect was kept vague because Id didn't want to commit to anything at that point, but it was still there. Prior to Doom Eternal, I was theorizing that Doomguy was a former Night Sentinel, while others were circulating the idea that he was the same guy as the original games. I was wrong, yes, but the fact is that there was a backstory there. So even if Doom Eternal is somehow lessened for exploring his backstory, it's backstory that Doom 2016 still laid the groundwork for.

That's all you fucking need. It's fucking DOOM. Rip and Tear!
Speak for yourself.

Doom 2016 came out in, well, 2016. That's over 20 years since the first Doom. I'm sympathetic to the idea of Doom not needing story, but the industry's moved on from Carmarck's infamous "story in a game is like story in porn" quote. In the context of the IP, Doom 2016's story is a regression from Doom 3. In isolation, it's terribly conveyed. Doom Eternal's story is better for many reasons, among them is that the story is conveyed in the game itself, not in endless codex logs. I agree that gameplay is more important than story, but story is almost always welcome (for me). Doom effectively squandered its story potential until this game, and it wasn't the only Id IP to do so (*cough*Quake*cough*). So thank the Father that at least someone at Id realized the worth of story, even if Carmack didn't back in the day.

But no, we have to talk about how *SPOILERS* he was found by these Night Sentinel shits and was trained by them and became their champion and blah blah blah I am falling asleep at this insultingly basic storytelling the writers think is good to interrupt gameplay time and again.
Well, again, speak for yourself. Doom 2016 bored me with its lack of story. Doesn't help that the gameplay had issues as well, that Doom Eternal also solved.

Aaaaaand I just lost an hour of progress, including a long unskippable cutscene that wasn't even that good, to not knowing how many zombies were in a room because they were hiding behind the camera, and I can't tell the difference between three and seven sets of shuffling footsteps.

Oh, and for some reason, the self-destruct sequence and escape music get activated a good number of minutes before the actual timer does. Your guess is as good as mine.

Edit: Finally got past G4 on my third attempt after taking two insta-kills, and now it's time to see what Leon's got.

I take it you were playing RE2 original. Funny enough, I was playing RE2R. I was continuing my playthrough of Leon A Scenario. Currently in the sewers and will finish the rest tomorrow. I am tired for tonight.

Yeah, I played the remake a while back, like October 2019 I think.

Continuing on my gold rank run in RDR2, I just got the Dark Bay Turkoman as Arthur through a neat trick on a mission in chapter 3, and for free. Looking forward to bonding with it through the rest of whatever missions I’ll need for the final trophies.

I’m also considering giving the RE2 Remake another try, just because dammit if I’ll let it beat me. Hope I have a cloud save yet because I deleted all my local data in a (gentle but still pissed) rage quit.

I got irritated by Mr X bum rushing me in the lab when I already had run out of ammo going back and forth through those evil plants finding everything to gain access, or make the serum? Yeah I think that was it. I also missed the flamethrower before taking the tram so kinda screwed myself there. But it was the one thing I couldn’t find access to for some reason. I even scoured every nook and cranny in the sewers during the chess piece puzzle which ultimately wasted further ammo beforehand.

I’m sure there was a much more efficient way of doing it all, perhaps even without the flamethrower. But by that point in the lab it felt like being a slug in a maze of brick walls (yeah my health was also low enough to be hobbling around). Usually I make several saves at different areas but my only other one was too far back to alleviate the frustration.

Getting the flamethrower from the King/Queen room as Leon is pretty important, yeah. I can understand that you'd have a hard time without it. Here's a hint: Once you pick up the King Plug, don't take the Queen Plug again immedaitely - you can get directly from there to the King door that the flamethrower is behind.

For getting through the rest of the Nest without it... honestly, I never did it without the flamethrower, so I don't know how much I can help there. If you really don't want to completely start over, a point-blank shotgun shell or magnum round in the face should stun Mr X long enough to run past if you have any of those, same for the Ivy zombies if you aim for the bulbs. Since you said you don't have any healing items, though, you might just be better off starting over, or at least going back to that long-way-back save.

And that's why we rotate saves boys.

Well that and game breaking progression destroying bugs. *stares at Cyberpunk in the corning with 20 rotating save files*

And that's Resident Evil 2 down. It still holds up pretty well if fixed-camera-tank-controls don't put you off of a game automatically, and it's a major improvement over the original game in a number of ways. Still, I don't think it's quite as good as the remake, and there are some issues I have with it like the plot and characters not being that great, or Sherry's parts - both escorting her and playing as her. Worth a look, but as groundbreaking as it was in 1998, don't expect it to rock your world now.

Time for the last of the tank trio, Resident Evil 3. Going to play on Hard mode because Easy seems too easy.

Edit: Yeah, I know about Zero and CV, but I'm just not that interested in those two.

Isometric rpg. But with no fighty bits. So it's basically all about the talky bits and the clicky on stuff bits. Which kind of makes it a lot like a point & click adventure game, but with stats and dice rolls. Wasn't really feeling it when I started playing, but it's quickly growing on me. It reminds me a fair bit of Discworld Noir, both conceptually and a bit in terms of writing, tho I'd say there is also a bigger chunk of China Mieville in there.

I picked that up on Steam about Christmas 2019, but I never played more than the intro. I think I met Kim in the hotel and that was it.

Maybe I'll give it another look sometime once I get done with RE3.

Va-11 Hall-A. It's a really excellent Visual Novel so far. Great setting, interesting characters, especially Dorothy, the plucky and professional robot sex worker with the body of a thirteen year old.

It's supposed to get full voice acting in an update later this year. Might be worth while to wait until that's out if you think that might hold your attention more.
