Guilty Gear Xrd also runs on unreal 3 and that game was both spectacular and colorful as hell. The engine is not the issue, the way it is used is.
I keep thinking it was on Unreal 4 for some reason. Thanks for the reminder. I will add that to the list in the edit.

That's mostly the early levels, and the game mainly uses orange and blue contrast. The game is awesome and is still better looking than Gears of War, Inversion, Dead To Rights Reboot, dark Sector, and Wanted: Weapons of Fate. It's Wild 9 combined with Mad World, and the best Duke Nukem game ever made. The game falls under good looking, which is why I have the parenthesis for a reason. Not the best, but still good looking. I give 0 fucks about your opinion and "OK, bro" attitude.
Ok bro.

Is now a bad time to point out that Resident Evil 4 has a lot of brown and grey as well?
No. You did the right thing.

It's a really good game, but visual identity isn't its strongest suit.
Yep. DMC3 suffers a similar problem, but not to the extent of RE4. In the early to mid part of the game, you are in a gothic tower with lots of browns, greys, and dark greys. While I'm at it: DmC (2013) has some good visuals, as long as you are in Limbo. When not, the game looks like Unreal 3 Engine: The Game. It's for artistic reasons, but still looks like shit. You can also tell where they cut corners. Granted, the world looks more colorful in the final mission, because Limbo has merged with the human world and demons are no longer invisible to humans. DMC5 has a similar issue with its muted and washed out palette. There are some environments with color, but that is in very specific parts of the demon tree. DMC4 is actually the most colorful game in the Devil May Cry Franchise.

Bit of everything

Beat SteamWorld Dig twice in a row (again) and got every trophy for the game, including the no death speedrun w/200k gold and 150 orbs. Which apparently has become the rarest trophy in my collection, with a 0.90% completion rate.

I'm replaying some favorite levels in Hotline Miami and just trying to get A+ in general.

Replayed Overcooked with a friend just for the hell of playing a co-op game.

And some This War of Mine. I have a theory about a sweetspot between comfort and tedium, and it applies perfectly to this game.

Watch it be called a “classic” filter in the Remake or something.

I’d also love to see a remake of MGS4 that fixes the biggest technical pitfalls Kojima lamented, but barring a complete miracle that ship has sailed, caught on fire and sank.

I believe they went to U4 with DBFZ and onward, but yeah Xrd was actually made back in like 2013 for the arcades so it was still U3.

Yeah, I'm not sure MGS4 can really be fixed on any level. I'd love to list off some problems but I think it would turn into an essay of shit that would require a complete overhaul. And I actually did enjoy the game somewhat but damn it feels like there were a ton of misteps.

Started Resident Evil 3. Made my way through the city, having a couple of encounters with Nemesis and losing a lot of health to everything, having to heal a bunch. Get into the restaurant and meet Carlos, decide to hide from Nemesis in the kitchen, which winds up dealing with Nemesis. I go down into the basement which I opened before, so it seemed like the way I needed to go; it's a dead end with absolutely no items. Even the door to the freezer can't be interacted with beyond 'it's a freezer'.

I come back up the ladder and Nemesis is awake again and directly on top of me, and kills me before I can even react!

And like that, I'm done. If this is the shit I can look forward to from here, it is not worth it.

For what it's worth, it is worth it (IMO). Most of the decisions in the game aren't arbitarily bad or good, they have different pros and cons. The basement/kitchen one is one of the few where one is outright worse than the other.

It's more that the game was practically pointing at the basement with a neon arrow, since I just opened the hatch with a key item before that all happened. For not just nothing at all to be down there, but to get spawn-camped by Nemesis when I went back, that is bullshit. You'd have to be psychic to know to immediately leave the restaurant if it's your first time, let alone to dodge Nemesis's attack when he's attacking the instant the room loads.

I definitely agree in that specific case - no-one in their right mind would choose the kitchen over the basement. But, like I said, it's, IIRC, only one of two choices in the game where one is arbitrarily worse than the other.

Explanation: I chose to hide in the kitchen because I heard about that somewhere before, and then went into the basement afterwards because I'd just used the key item to open it before, so I felt like that was being telegraphed by the game designers. When I came out, Nemesis spawn-killed me, which probably would've happened regardless of the choice. Specifically, what I'm like 'how was I supposed to know that' over is 'leaving the restaurant after hiding and blowing up Nemesis, instead of going into the basement that I came here to open'.

If you already got that, I'm sorry for over-explaining. I just worry that you aren't quite following me because I've been explaining it badly.

Been playing RE2Remake again. I completed Leon A two nights ago, and finished Claire B last night on Normal. I already did all S+ Rank runs on Normal. I finally got the Lore Explorer achievement. It took me way longer than it should have to get that achievement. The final note was looking for was in the bathroom of the orphanage the entire time. I did not even know there was extra ammo for Claire's Mac 11 and a first aid spray. The B scenarios are harder; especially for Claire early on, but at least you get items faster and the powerful weapons sooner. I just hate that you get new pistols, but the ammo for them can't be crafted. Claire gets a rapid fire revolver and Leon gets a pistol he will always hold gangsta style. I might try for an S+ rank run on Hardcore, but I am not making any promises.

I have purchsed and own Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem for the Gamecube that I can play on my Nintendo Wii and this is the first time I am ever even playing this game.

So tell me, given what I've heard about this game, is the plot essentially Lovecraft? Are there Eldritch Forces at work here? Am I gonna be assaulted by tentacled abominations?

Basically a Lovecraft game. Eldritch forces are at work, and you'll be facing creepy monsters of various horror and have to keep your sanity in check. BTW, you have beat the game 3 times to get the true ending.

So Eternal Darkness is up there as one of the best Lovecraftian horror games of all time?

Followed by Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and Bloodborne?

Yes. The gameplay has not exactly aged well though, but is manageable. The story and voice acting are on point. Still holds up excellently.

Followed by Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth and Bloodborne?
That's up to you to decide.

Depends what floats your boat most.

ED is especially big on the psychological angle, third person and highly regarded as one of Gamecube’s best titles. It has sanity effects as a mechanic, including some 4th wall stuff, and like a dozen playable characters each in a distinct chapter. There are three paths to the end and each act as a permanent piece of each play through towards completing the greater whole.

CoC also has psychological elements like audio-visual tricks but is also more survival horror-ish. It’s also first person and the gameplay is generally considered rough around the edges. Xbox or Windows only IIRC.

Bloodborne is less about toying with the player psychologically and more about placing them in an engrossing world with layered stories to discover while essentially beast hunting in third person. The psychological elements it has mostly involve a malleable status effect called Insight on the player character and influences how they perceive certain key encounters, as well as accessing unique abilities as the game progresses. The audio-visual presentation also exudes Lovecraftian horror exceedingly well in terms of art design and atmosphere. It’s also a PS4 exclusive, but if rumors hold true it may end up on PC within a year or so.
