Final Fantasy 4: Just completed the Magnetic Cavern. Though I've played the SNES (2) and DS versions before, in both, that was as far as I'd ever gotten. Other than a few story spoilers, everything past this point is unknown to me.

It's definitely not aged perfectly; the implementation of ATB is pretty simple and the party members' mechanics are pretty varied in how useful they are, like the jobs in 3. But as the first of a new era and one that set a standard going forward for several games, I think it's still worth playing, at least so far. Hopefully I still feel that way by the end.

In between games so I've been playing a bit of Binding of Isaac.

I'm close to the 10,000 trophy milestone and thought I'd hit 10k with a special Platinum but can't make up my mind on which one "deserves" it.

Romeo Is A Dead Man - Currently on Chapter 6. While having some annoying sections, this level is so much better and gives you mostly a lot more space to do combat. I actually like the puzzle/key aspects here. Simple and effective. I've got so more worthwhile upgrades, can now do 2 bloody strikes attacks. You can upgrade to one more so you can store 3. The Bastard Summoning System I getting much better with. Helps I upgraded two of them, and one I got is already overpowered. Once I get another upgrade slot, I will be able to summon four at once.

A friend of mine bought me Dino Crisis after finding out it was on Steam, because he wanted to see what I made of it and if I'd manage to get further than he did back in the day. So far, my thoughts on it can be summed up as 'It's Resident Evil 3 with dinosaurs'. Admittedly, the average velociraptor is a fair bit more dangerous than the average zombie, but you don't usually have to deal with groups of them. Inventory space feels pretty cramped even with the ability to mix items, but I haven't outright run out so far. And I do like the change to full-3D environments from matte backgrounds. As for the port, I've noticed a couple of clipping issues, but I honestly have no idea if those were introduced in the port or if they happen in the original version anyway, and considering the key binding options menu and the lack of a proper quit button, I'm guessing this is just the original PC port with some texture upscaling and compatibility with Windows 11 and the Dualsense controller, not that that's inherently a bad thing.

I've only played up to the first story choice so far (I decided, knowing nothing, to take Gail's route to the basement), but I'm willing to see where this goes, and if it can replace Resident Evil 2 as the best fixed-camera-tank-controls game. Probably not, but you never know.

(I haven't quit Final Fantasy 4, I'm still playing that too. I tend to not just play one game at a time unless something is really sucking me in.)

I'm enjoying Dead Island 2 much more then I expected. I mean I assumed it would be a decent zombie bashing game, but its also got a pretty good story that doesn't do the usual 'man is the real monster' thing that I'm so sick of. Also the main character I chose has ended up being, Jacob, pretty damn lovable. He's got a really fun personality that is quippy, but it doesn't feel forced.

The game has also managed to get a bit more difficult, which is nice, although I still don't feel like I really need to utilize all my skills to win, most of the time. There are a few rough enemies to deal with, but if you can get them isolated then its usually not too bad.

Reminds me of my thousandth being the OG Demon’s Souls plat. I had to be careful because I was trophy hunting all the God of Wars beforehand and was close to spoiling it as the next one I got would’ve put me over.

I did everything! At least everything that adds to 100%. I'm only missing a trophy for beating a high score in one of the three GameBoy games.
I think I was about 98%. I know at least one puzzle I realised the answer for but forgot to go back and do.

Lorelei... was ace for the design aesthetic as well as the puzzles, so I don't know if you'll necessarily find these other puzzle games as rewarding but could try Chants of Senaar, The Roottrees Are Dead, The Seance of Blake Manor (not finished), and maybe TR-49 (I installed it and took a very quick look).

Oh that last point probably just killed the game for me, banner saga worked like that and I absolutely hated it.
Yes, that weird effect where characters moved faster proportional to how outnumbered they are... it's a bit like punishing you for success.

Ok I got a sort of map in Haven so I'll just accept that making progress in this game will be slow for me, with lots of flying around in circles but every time I play I do get further along. Since that means playing is this charming couple, that makes it worth it. It's the kind of game where objectively it's a mixed experience but the things I like I really like so it's good.

Was listening to a podcast yesterday where someone brought up how they didn't like the combat in this game because it's turn-based and I just had to roll my eyes. Yes, it's kind of "turn-based" but not strictly, you can and sometimes have to charge attacks while the enemy is doing things, and you're controlling two characters, so it's very much its own unique thing. I can't say I always enjoy it but it's interesting. Meanwhile, Clair Obscure is glazed to high heavens because it's turn-based but you get to doge and parry and spend time in menus equipping things, yay!

I know, I know, another rant about the inconsistency of consensus reception about gameplay but my god sometimes it's so glaring I can't help it.

Played Sennaar and liked it a lot (stealth bits notwithstanding). I'll check out the others!

I bought Ghost Recon Wildlands Ultimate Edition for £16 on Epic. Spent half an hour having to install Ubisoft connect, remember my password, cursing profusely etc

I have played one Ubisoft game before, Farcry 5, and when I played it, I very quickly understood what people meant about Ubisoft games, this appears to be the same.

So yeah, it's an Ubisoft game. Polished, lots of "content", reasonably engrossing 3rd person open world gameplay, will probably get bored way before the end. Played for a few hours this evening, the hours flew by without anything particularly memorable happening. That feeling of "I really should have done something better with my time" sunk in very rapidly afterwards.

I enjoyed that one for a couple of hours, but I played with my group of friend and it was mostly us screwing around and killing each others.

As a "serious" game, there's juts way too much padding, I don't think I could see myself really playing it. I liked those things when I was a kid and could only buy a game every season or so, but as an adult with limited time, just give me a strong 10-20 hours over repetitive 100.

Beat Dead Island 2, yeah, I quite liked that and I do really want to see where the story goes since while it was mostly satisfying, it also leads to a sequel, which is apparently in the works with an eta of 2028. There is a new game+ which is tempting since harder combat would be fun, but I also would want to see if the other player characters are as lovable as Jacob, I'm guessing not, but I would like to see.

Grabbed Nioh 2 and returned it. The character creator was pretty impressive, but the game kinda just starts out with a ton of choices and the first area has 2 pretty strong enemies that you are supposed to avoid, but one is right in your path. I feel like I'm supposed to have an ai or player companion or something, probably should have done the tutorial, but meh. I'm sure I could have gotten into it if I tried but Shinobi: Art of Vengeance was on sale too.

So I've only beaten the first boss in Shinobi Art of Vengeance, but its pretty cool so far. The graphics are fantastic, its by the dev of Streets of Rage 4, it better look good. Music is really good too, gameplay is mostly tight, but the controls are a bit complicated. You have that kinda annoying diagonal down attack when you do a heavy attack while jumping, which always takes awhile to get used too and jumping off walls feels more oldschool and less smooth then I want it too, again, just things to get used too. Looking forward to playing more tomorrow after some more Gobliins 6.

Since it's now on Playstation Plus Premium, playing Spider-Man 2. Only through the tutorial/first mission, but it feels like a pretty solid start. Web swinging is still fun, but I'll need a bit of time to get used to the web wings because my gaming instinct makes me want to correct for altitude drops that aren't actually happening in the same way as a lot of games with that sort of gliding. Very much enjoying the characters, though, and the first scene with Kraven the Hunter was surprisingly intense, which promises a fairly dark story.

Big Hop
Was too easy to overlook this indie mascot 3D physics (kinda) based platformer, it unceremoniously plopped out on the store surrounded by a constant flow of slop sharing sometimes a similar surface-level art style and often a similar level price tag. Indeed, I didnae neither till other content creators platformed it lit n' figly. Checked online reviews and they were as glowing ,so why not, gave it a go and yes it's alright. Defo comes with its own moments of challenge in the side universes reminiscent of mario galaxy where sometimes I think I just kinda cheesed through some of them out of frustration. Though it only really hits its stride when you find your first town, at least for me anyway, cos of the sudden wave of characters presenting a richer example of where the whole vibe of the writing's at. Only complaint apart from the insane spikes of platform challenge is how quickly and easily hats are disappeared. Where my fucking hats at, big hop?? Paid good money for those!

It's trailer day today;

MiO: Memories in Orbit
I suppose this is a more breezy hollow knight type metroidvania, not breezy in the difficulty sense but breezy in the way the character moves more like a leaf in the wind. Soundtrack is probably the best part, instantly melancholic and mysterious, like a 5tth suicide attempt more out of habit than conscious thought process. It also plays best off total intrigue, so am feeling justified in not explaining a goddamn thing about the narrative. Not cos I don't understand it, don't print that I don't understand it in the headlines!

Crisol: Theater of Idols
This is a very indie, very Spanish folklore take on resident evil 7 gameplay meets bioshock strong world building, and am a lil shocked how under the radar this seems to have gone. I suppose marketing was the first cut in the budget. But hey, your own blood is literally the ammo for all your guns! And by extension your health too! Yeah best get good with accuracy in this clunky mannequin murdering adventure, alas you finna be bleeding anemic on the floor in no time lol. Praise the sun! With all your delicious blood!

I think the one thing I might get from it is stealth killing all the enemies is the villages/strongholds etc, but at the same time, the stealth element isn't quite good enough to hold up on that alone.

Still, £16, that's maybe 3 pints down the pub if you're very lucky.

Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined reminds me of an issue I always forget I have because it (thankfully) rarely shows up; written dialoge with an accent. There's a whole bunch of old english-y type dialoge from NPCs in this game, and it's constantly tripping me up when reading. Just put 'old dialect' in parentheses above the text boxes of these NPCs and I'll imagine the rest.

Demo of Unbounded. Er, Unfounded. Unmounted? Unbounded? Oh, UnMourned!

Sigh. Ain't buying the full game so don't expect anything productive, thorough or useful here. It's just old man yelling at clouds, or pigeons, or pigeons shaped like clouds. Down the local park, drunk on cheap leaded alcohol, scaring away the kids either way. They need a bit of horror in their lives, it builds character. And I need the ethanol, so everyone's a winner. Unless they're kids buying this game, cos it provides neither to either.

- Now, idiots who don't know wtf they're talking about might call this a PT wannabe, it's not. It's a Visage wannabe. And Visage isn't a PT-like, whoever put that idea in your mind is your enemy and needs to be psychologically castrated before the public for mass negligecide: PT is repeating corridor/spot the difference (till you get bored and quit) simulator like all those cheap ass games called like Exit Station 8 or some shit, whereas Visage is a wander an abandoned house (till you get bored and quit) simulator. It's an important difference your grandparents need to know about. Or your parents if their parents are dead already. -

There are a few Visage wannabes noticeable of late, they each have this cliché attempt to begin with a shocking intro cutscene, never as effective as Visage and somehow cheaper and triter looking each time. Then you awaken in a perfectly normal abandoned creepy house that you explore, trying to figure out how many light switches you're supposed to turn on or off till a spooky event like a window repeatedly opens and shuts while it locks you in the room, pointing at some shitty "sanity" symbol in the corner as if it means a goddamn thing worth worrying about. Rinse and repeat in every room or corridor till you get bored and quit. Did I mention the cheesy xylophone """creepy kid-like""" music? Is it even worth mentioning? Personally I just prefer to hide in the dark till the insanity takes over and kills me from, um...insanity? It's still way more closure than real life ever gets you. Uh, me I mean. Unless you're one of the kids at the park then definitely you. You need to learn this existential horror, so you don't buy these cliché cheap ass games thinking they're good or some shit. I'm here to help, see! Now be a good kid and sneak some bottles from your parents booze cabinet for me would ya.

Still working on Spider-Man 2. I've definitely been enjoying the gameplay, although I'm still getting a bit messed up by the introduction of parry-only attacks in this game, and other than one moment in the story so far (Miles, come on, man, save those people), I've been liking the story a fair bit. It's refreshing to have a superhero story where basically everyone of importance save one know the secret identity of their loved ones, the main couples are actually loving couples, and the one person who isn't in the know on the secret identity makes a whole lot of sense to be out of the loop and is a pretty great guy.

Finally finished Tainted Grail, final playtime 45 hours. That's quite a lot for a AA RPG. Not much to say that I haven't before, it's very good. And the ending manages to stick the landing, offering up multiple options with agreeable viewpoints on all of them. The epilogue is surprisingly extensive, and gives a lot of thought about how to do another playthrough. I only unlocked less than half the achievements, and judging by their unlock conditions a lot of them seem to be about hidden stuff you have to go out of your way to seek out.

The game is absolutely plagued at every turn by its biggest flaw, and that's its balancing. Past the halfway point of act 2 at the very latest the game becomes so easy that calling it a cakewalk would be an overstatement of its difficulty. Pretty much everything I just mowed down with a ridiculous crit rate while ducking and weaving around enemy attacks. And I didn't even try to optimize my build, I just picked what suited my playstyle. After a point I stopped even doing stealth archery because barging into every encounter made them go by faster. The generous stamina system, the slo-mo power, and the very strong bonuses you can easily get from the skill trees end up breaking the game in combination. Rewards or new equipment cease to excite, because you're insanely overpowered anyway. It kind of reminds me of a TTRPG campaign where the DM is way too generous with rewards and bonuses, and as a result ends up kind of scrambling to create any kind of challenge.

Not that the numbers or gameplay systems are the only sources of imbalance: the AI is straight up laughable, and flat out broken at times. I ended up cheesing multiple boss fights by just getting the dumb bastards stuck on level geometry, and plinking them to death with a zillion billion arrows. Dodging attacks is mostly ridiculously easy, making defensive skills or armor feel borderline pointless even on the hardest difficulty. When there is actual challenge, mostly in boss fights, it's usually of the frustrating kind: it feels like their movesets are not properly designed for a first person perspective, often coming out with attacks faster than you can react or gauge distance.

The game also majorly loses steam in the third act. It's set pretty exclusively in snowy mountains, which is a very boring environment to traverse for 10 hours. The main storyline screeches to a halt as the game basically just chucks a bunch of sidequests in your lap, and these aren't small sidequests either: they're more like mini-acts of their own with whole casts of characers. They're enjoyable enough, but it's hard to think of a better way to ruin the sense of buildup and escalation. But I suppose it's just something you have to take with a game of this budget.

Like I've said previously, this is a seriously excellent game from a first-timer studio. The core is rock solid, the game's problems lie more with budgetary constraints and things that can be fine-tuned with better QA. This is like a great first album by a rock band: full of energy and passion, clearly rough, but also full of promise that's just begging to be fully cashed in on.
