I was super focused on code vein 2 to the point where I missed a new suda 51 game coming out somehow. But yeah I just noticed this new Romeo game out of nowhere the other day and instantly jumped in. Didn't spent a ton of time on it so far but it's characteristically trippy in a by-now familiar way that makes me nostalgic for killer 7 of all things. Gameplay is very arcadey and fast but also satisfying, they added a touch of souls dna with the respawning enemies and limited heals and dodge rolls but the lack of a stamina bar lets you curbstomp most things. I love how you can unlock all the weapons very easily and try em all, so far I like the greatsword and pistol combo. Only cleared 2 levels so far, playing on orange chocolate which I assume is hard mode and while most mobs are very easy the electric head boss kicked my ass a bunch. Was fun though, felt very satisfying defeating him.

Also the pixel art spaceship navigation and the bastard growing thing adds some variety both visually and in the gameplay, not sure how deep it goes with it so far but it's definitely a work of love and I'm enjoying every second. Also that J-rap in the start menu is equally old school and nostalgic-feeling. Reminds me of FLCL.

Recently completed Islets. Its a very sweet, relatively short 2D explorer-platformer. Bit of a limited moveset but enjoyable.

Bought the new Cult of the Lamb Woolhaven DLC, but only got about 30 minutes out of it-- i hadn't realised the base game had been removed from PS+, so as soon as the license was checked, it locked me out. Feel like there should be a warning when buying DLC for a game Sony has decided you should no longer have access to.

Also been playing Skelethrone, chronicle of Ericona, a pretty by-the-numbers metroidvania. Its janky and a little frustrating. Enjoyers of dark swordy metroidvanias would be better off going for Death's Gambit or Blasphemous.

I stuck with the default sword and pole arms/spear, and rocket launcher. The other weapons are fun, but like the default sword for it's practicality. Believe it or not they're hitting paul's combos for each weapon, the game doesn't tell you about. Especially for the gauntlets.

I did my entire playthrough on normal. The second boss still gave me trouble there too. I do have it on hard for new game plus. Very hard does unlock after you beat the game on normal or hard. I didn't care much for the Souls-likes mechanics of respawning enemies, but this isn't technically new, as Suda did this before with Killer7. Heaven Smiles would also respawn, when you got to certain save points or shops.

I noticed bosses are much more easier or manageable, when you have all the powerful tools at your disposal. I'm still not a fan of most of these bosses. Combat is good, but I still say Killer Is Dead has the best combat out of all of Grasshopper's titles.

Now that I'm approaching the end of Relooted, I wanted to share some thoughts after reading some of the criticisms and reception of the game I've been seeing, in case anyone is interested in playing this game.

FWIW, it has exceeded my expectations and hopes- I love this game.
I should point out that my tastes in gameplay have been running divergent to a lot of the critical and gamer culture opinions. I love games that focus on providing a total experience, narrative through gameplay, and offer a unique vibe. Recent games like Keeper, Sword of the Sea, Neva, and South of Midnight were largely dismissed as being good but not worthy of high praise because they didn't do anything particularly novel with gameplay, weren't particularly challenged, and offered no reason to replay them. Yet I loved them for what they are- total and complete experiences that were beautiful and fun to play.

Relooted combines platforming, a puzzle aspect, and a narrative. None of them are amazing by themselves, but IMO all work on their own and, more importantly, create the kind of "greater than the sum of its parts" gameplay experience that are my favorite games. The rhythm of getting a Mission Impossible style briefing with cultural lesson; scoping out a space, deciding on entrance and exit points, where to place team members, and deciding on whether to go for optional objectives; running around the joint preparing your route; then run-platforming your way out of there is like the perfect type of 30 minutes gameplay loop.

So if you see reviews they'll say there is jank and really the only jank is there are some awkward animations in the dialogue here and there, but nothing serious or frequent. And the UI with the planning phase of a heist did get annoying sometimes. My biggest criticism is that sometimes it's hard to know how to plan for the heist before you get to run around in the space as the playable character and that made me start over. Since the whole loop is very fast it wasn't a problem but maybe a long dev/play-test would have ironed some of that out. Compared to some of the "jank" and UI struggles I've seen in more popular games, it actually feels like petty complaint (I'd rather die than attempt a Larian game with a controller again, for example).

Another criticism is pacing, and that is one I strongly disagree with. The game is like 5-10 hours, broken up in chapters, with most chapters adding a team member (and associated mechanic), a sort of "training" mission to get you up to speed on how to use it, and then the heist. Some reviewers have complained that this feels like constant tutorializing. I disagree because metroidvanias and action games are praised for adding new mechanics throughout a game while others are criticized for being repetitive, so it's like you can't win with opinon about pacing. Relooted keeps things moving along by adding to your heist kit. I also think dismissing the "training" missions are just tutorials is unfair- these are core game moments, where you're developing narrative through gameplay. And since it uses the platforming and action element of the game, it's like any other narrative driven action game.

Frankly I think people are coming in with their own genre preferences and judging like that. The puzzles aren't as hard as the Talos Principle or Lorelei and the Lazer Eyes so it's a "bad" puzzle game; the platforming isn't as ball-busting as Silksong so it's a bad action game; the narrative isn't as hearbreaking as Claire Obscur so it's a bad story game; etc. It's kind of a like how some reacted to Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, calling it a bad metroidvania etc. But these games aren't interested in being some definitive challenging thing, they're going for having you play through a story with a smooth total experience. And that kind of thing just isn't interesting to argue and talk about I guess.

The biggest set of criticisms of the game though are from a bunch of racist/anti-woke assholes and they can just go eat a dick. Any search for this game on youtube or Steam comments is just a slew of racism, coupled with celebration over its low player count. Congratulations racist assholes for doing your part to sabotaging a game. Fortunately, this is the kind of game that lends itself perfectly to patient discovery. I see the makers of Raj- another game with no discerning individual gameplay elements but was a delightful experience for those who liked it- are making an ambitious sequel. These linear, play-once, single-player action adventure games offer the same experience on release days and 10 years later, where world of mouth and as the racist grifters move on to their next targets hopefully allow the positive Steam comments to catch up to reality, allow more and more people to find their way to these games.

Thank you for the deep dive. I did not know about this game until you mentioned it. I'll be sure to check this out if I ever get the chance. I've been checking ratings in.It's mostly positive ratings and reviews on steam. Professional critics definitely like it. I'm just saying ignore the grifters, because they don't dictate anything as usual.

Bastion or Transistor? There's that third other game, but it's turned based which isn't quite my vibe.
Both of the first games you mentioned are good, but I suggest Bastion. It has the best story and narration in my opinion. The gameplay is simple but uncomplicated. It does pull a few unique twists here, and there.

Looking for opinions: what Supergiant game should I play first, Bastion or Transistor? There's that third other game, but it's turned based which isn't quite my vibe.
I would say Transistor was their weakest game, still good, but I think their other games are stronger. Bastion is their first, but its also really good, go for that.

I'm gonna go along with everyone and say Bastion, for the simple reason that it came out first. It's also the most linear and straight-forward. I played it after Transister and Pyre, was worried it wouldn't hold up as well, but that was wrong, it was fantastic.

Honestly, just go in order. Transistor is super cool and while Pyre is their least popular, it is my personal favorite. I generally do not like "turn-based" but this isn't like some jRPG, it's way cooler.

First I've heard of this game. Looks interesting enough for 20 bucks, at some point when my backlog's a little less swamped.

Final Fantasy 4: Though it was the franchise's second attempt at a serious story, they were still figuring things out, so the story's fairly simple; as a result I haven't had a lot to say about it. Currently I've finished the first Underworld arc, and I'm headed for Eblan next. The bosses are getting a bit more complex, but again as this was the first game to use the ATB system there's usually only a couple of things to keep track of at once. At least it's more engaging than 'grind until your HP is high enough to win' like FF3.

I'm still enjoying it, but playing it again after an 18-year gap, I can definitely see that being fairly simple compared to most other JRPGs I've played since then is kinda letting it down. I would readily recommend it as anybody's first JRPG ever, though, since it's simple enough to understand and get into while not being completely braindead like Mystic Quest. Maybe not as good as Paper Mario or TTYD, but lacking a Nintendo console, it's about as good a baby's first RPG as you can get.

Steam nextfest is going on so I've been trying out demos.

MightReya. Play an anime schoolgirl fighting giant monsters. Its kind of an interesting 3d brawler kinda thing, but the controls are rather complicated and he camera isn't fast enough.

Panzer Dragoon Zwei remake. Well, its Panzer Dragoon 2, looks ok, but it feels off. Granted I only played the original once back in the day when I rented a saturn, but the music seems quiet, the effects seem lacking and it just has a bit of a cheap feel to it. But, I also remember not really being into Zwei back in the day so... I don't know.

Warshift 2. RTS where you can directly control your commander. Its interesting but still feels pretty rough. Like aiming with your commander feels weird, also when you try to use an ability the camera likes to move. Moving your mouse curser to where the abilities are is close enough to the side of the screen to move it. Could be cool once it releases though.

Starship Troopers: Ultimate Bug war. I ended up liking this more then I expected. Your allies are pretty dumb and suicidal, your weapons look way too similar and kinda boring in general, and the game treats your character like they are the super special, which I kinda hate. But shooting the bugs is pretty satisfying, like Helldivers 2 satisfying, they have good animations and blow into chunks just like I want. The choice to make all your allies 2d pixels is weird, when the bugs are 3d, but I kinda like that the map is just a big map with objectives that you roam around helping out. I have a feeling I will end up getting it when it comes out.

Spirit of the Dome. Tower defense with a really stark art style. Seems pretty standard for a tower def game with heroes and abilities. Its ok.

Vampire Crawlers. You know Vampire Survivor? This is a dungeon crawler created by the guy who made Survivors and its using the same stuff from Survivors and its pretty damn good. You choose your crawler and they start with a few weapon cards then you roam around the dungeon fighting enemies, leveling up and getting more weapon cards. It really is Survivors with how quick it plays and how you unlock things, after a run you can spend gold in town to get permanent bonuses and new crawlers. There is a bit more personality since now each of your heroes talks, which I don't remember Survivors having, unless it was added. Either way, very good and definitely buying it.

Transistor is okay, but gameplay wise its very simple. Honestly watching a lets play of it would let you get like 80% of the enjoyment of the game, since the best part are writing and music.

Transistor is... okay. I'd say its more worth playing (as opposed to just watching) because the gameplay is more interesting, unfortunately writing is pretty weak compared to the rest of their catalogue and music is just okay (despite the main character being a musician).

FYI, the japanese version has more gameplay stuff in it (they removed a bunch of stuff when localizing it because they thought dumb american couldn't possibly understand character having a special ability). Honestly the game is okay at best, gameplay is super boring, but the story goes in bonker direction so its kinda fun for that. Years later they made a sequel for mobile if you wanna track it down.

I'm playing the Pixel Remaster edition on Steam that has all the mechanics that weren't in "Final Fantasy 2". Considering that's probably the most accessible version right now, that's for the better. The 3D version is still available on some platforms, including Steam, but that's almost an entirely different beast.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I've been moping about since I miss playing games but don't have my PC, then I remembered that Supergiant puts out all of their games on Mac. My plan is I'll try Bastion first, then convince my girlfriend to play Pyre so I can watch over her shoulder and see if I want to play too. She actually likes Fire Emblem and Dragon Quest so there's a better chance she'll actually stick to it.

Lol I assume one of these is meant to be Bastion?

Still on Spider-Man 2. Fun game, glad they got the inevitable discovery on the part of Harry that Peter is Spider-Man out of the way fairly early on rather than saving it for the big climax.

I downloaded a couple of VR demos from Steam's Next Fest: The Amusement and Tammuz: Blood and Sand.

The Amusement
's conceit is that it's a room-scale experience, which means you're meant to move around inside your room to find and manipulate things. This didn't get along well with my cramped living room, and the experience itself was horribly cramped and claustrophobic- and things only got worse when I found myself out-of-bounds, as the game would simply black out the visuals until it considered me back in-bounds. And the terrible movement mechanics meant that accidentally being out-of-bounds was extremely easy.

Tammuz: Blood and Sand didn't have its executable and wouldn't run.

I really looking forward to this one. I've only played the game once at a Circuit City. Other times I saw videos on YouTube way later. I like the first remake and have a physical copy on Switch.
