Flash of the blade originally by Iron Maiden. I personally prefer the Avenged Sevenfold cover.

I like Disturbed versions Of "Land of confusion" better then genesis
I have said it before, I will say it again, and I will say it with my dying breath: blasphemy! Collins, Banks, and Rutherford got it right the first time and any other attempt will pale in comparison. My opinion on most covers is that they are different, not better or worse. With that in mind, a few covers I like, but still think comparing them to the original is impossible (apples and oranges and all that).

September: Earth, Wind, and Fire (original) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfLEc09tTjI], Pomplamoose (cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xycnv87N_BU]
Heart of Life: John Mayer (original) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=omKqns8qyHw], I Fight Dragons (cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJjL7Hjwqfs]
And Your Bird Can Sing: The Beatles (original) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iC6D2N4nylg], I Fight Dragons (cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n2H4aP62Gyk]
The Future Soon: Johnathan Coulton (original) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kEL_xwdp04], I Fight Dragons (cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilX0kjhQ7jA]

In Flames' cover of Everything counts, seriously, it's bloody golden.

Oh I am gonna get grief for this, but, deep breath:

David Cook's version of World I Know. Very vocally complex take on the original that was sorta talk sung.

Have you heard his cover of The Beatles' Come Together? It was in Across the Universe (which had some interesting Beatles covers to begin with).

Thousand Foot Krutch version of Unbelievable.

Rise Against's version of Anyway You Want it.

Tupac's version of Broken Wings is slightly better than the original, but that depends on my mood.

Edit: Also this:
Improved the original so much.

Pretty much any cover done by Johnny Cash will outstrip the original, but that may just be me.

Also Save Ferris's version of "Come On Eileen" is much better then Dexy's Midnight Runners version.

Also Alestorm's version of "You are a pirate".

EDIT=And as has been previously mentioned the Jeff Buckley version of "Broken Hallujeh" is far better then Leonard Cohens (and that Wainwright blokes as well for that matter).

Also Johnny Cash's cover of "I Hung My Head"
Not to mention Johnny Cash's cover of "One"
Johnny Cash could cover the noise of someone taking a dump and make it beautiful.

Some might consider this ear poison, but I prefer it to the Animals version. It's tricky though, since even their version is based on the original folk song.

As for Bugotak, awesome, awesome, Siberian throat-singing band who make use of a variety of traditional instruments and techniques and apply them to modern songs, as well as putting out some fantastic original work.

I liked Celldweller's cover of "Tragedy" by the BeeGees. My dad's a longtime Beegee
s fan, and he liked it when he overheard me playing it.

Most of the Iced Earth covers with Matthew Barlow are better than the originals.

The originals are still kickass though.

I feel like I should be whipped for saying this...... but I really like the Alien Ant Farm cover of Smooth Criminal.

DON'T KILL ME!!!

Now, I want to make some things clear: I HATE everything else they have done. I HATE the video from the cover and I LOVE MJ's original song and video. However, I also love the rock version. Sue me.

I would post it, but the music video itself is just too horrendous.

Boyce Avenue. They have made a career of doing amazing covers:

Katy Perry's Teenage Dream and Firework (no seriously, they sound amazing in the cover)
Coldplay's Fix You and Every Teardrop is a Waterfall

Really, everyone should go check these out.

Lynrd Skynrd never covered Black Betty. The cover you're probably thinking of is by Ram Jam, an extremely underrated band.

woops my bad. thanks for the correction... should definitely fix that on my ipod then.... hmmmm who should I kill for this typo.
