I prefer Beck's cover of Diamond Dogs and Everybody's Gotta Learn Sometime to the originals.

Metallicas "Turn the Page" by Bob Seager is an absolute auditory abortion that should have never been allowed to surface from the cesspool of musical travesty. Seriously Turn the page is one song that absolutely did NOT need to be covered, and Metallica proved that once and for all.
This. Turn the Page was phenomenal at every point in the song, and the sax riff should only ever be played on a saxophone.

A Perfect Circle's cover of "Imagine", originally by John Lennon.

Yes, it's from eMOTIVe, but don't let that stop you from listening to a good song.

I actually loved that song a lot. Sure, I've never heard the Bob Seager one, but Metallica's cover wasn't the auditory equivalent of stabbing yourself in the nads, as you two are making it out to be.

I hadn't heard of this song before hearing the cover, but it's a thousand times better than the original. Totally amazing.

Sword of the Warrior - Persefone [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AV4mgToh1M] (cover)

Sword of the Warrior - Cacophony [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=In3ltTi707U] (original)

Only 2 I can think of that I dislike is ... Musically it wasn't bad, but I was always put off by the way the video for it completely changed the meaning of the song. It's supposed to be about the ennui created by long tours, but instead they turned it into a lament about prostitution. I dunno, it just grated with me. My wife, though, who's a big fan of both Metallica and Bob Seger, liked the cover. For me it's Seger all the way.

As for other covers I've preferred... I love Dr John's cover of Cruella de Vil, not to mention Band From TV's covers of You Can't Always Get What You Want and Minnie The Moocher. In fact, on the whole I find I prefer covers of Stones songs to the originals; I guess I'm just not a big fan of the Stones sound.

Brown Eyed Girl - Everclear
Imagine - Jack Johnson
Come Sail Away - Southpark

A lot of songs I like are apparently covers...but I don't keep track of such things.

The Animals' version of The House of the Rising Sun
Good call, and kudos for knowing they didn't write it.

OT: Ben Folds (in my opinion) critique of Dr Dre's casual misogyny:

EDIT: I don't think the video has imbedded properly but heres a link

Anyone remember "Blinded by the Light" by Bruce Springsteen?? No?

Video Snip!

Well the cover by Manfred Mann is so superior that no one even remembers who released it first.

Video Snip!

I'm a Springseen fan and I never even knew about this. Thank you!

EDIT: before this is hidden as a low-content post, let me see if I can find another cover. Remember, I think covers can't be better than the original, only different.

King of Wishful Thinking: Go West (original) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ry4iwzS4Na0], New Found Glory (cover) [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFwrLZijNLk]

I preferred TCADs cover of Metric's Black Sheep.
Yup, I like other songs by Metric but there is just something about Brie Larson's vocals that are perfect for this song.

Lots of mine have been listed like:
Hurt by Cash
Mad World by Gary Jules
Smooth Criminal by Alien Ant Farm
Blue Monday by Orgy

One I haven't seen yet that is not necessarily better but also super amazing is:
Chasing Cars by The Baseballs- http://youtu.be/CwPJtYIzzKA

most of these make me sad, but I probably have a shitty taste in music, or maybe I'm a snob.
here's mine
