You have just spent 50+ hours in your favorite RPG/Shooter/Racing/Puzzle game. You are the ultimate badass, no one can touch you. But one day, as you are almost done with the game, you discover that your save is corrupt/bug makes it unable to continue/crazy girlfriend or sibling deletes you save slot. The end results usually includes a broken controller and television.

I told that story to ask a question. When has a ruined play through has effectively erase hours of your life?

Since my migration from consoles I have not had this problem. There is a program called "drop box" that I copy saves to, I always back them up in at least 2 places and use multiple slots, since an incident in PoP: Warrior Within.

Naturally I lost all of my game saves when I had to switch from XBox 360 Pro to Elite. The Pro version kept having repeated RROD problems, even after a round trip to a repair shop, so eventually it just had to go. Needless to say I felt buggered.

I had my SoulCalibur 3 save data corrupted, twice. Chronicles of the Sword mode was so fun though, I needed to play it!

That Yu-Gi-Oh card game for the PS1.

Me and a buddy of mine tried loading a save file, it told us we had illegal data. Illegal Data!! What the hell does that mean?!

Closest I have come to that is Super Mario World. We made it to the last level. We were heading to the boss. My buddies mom walked in the room. Stepped down to hard and knocked the cartridge loose. And we cried like babies.

I've really only had this problem with Gen II Pokemon games before the clocks went dead. Even then, it only happened once, and I was fairly early through my second playthrough, so...yeah. I don't recall anything happening recently.

I still take precautions when available, but not to the point where I'm backing things up on flash drives, MediaFire, whatever.

Playing through Batman: Arkham Asylum for the second time, trying to get the Hard Mode, Riddler and "Arkham's Biggest Mystery" achievements all in one go. I was a little past Killer Croc when my save file got corrupted.

Haven't touched the game since, it's just too frustrating. I'd spent hours, meticulously combing every inch of Arkham Island as it was presented to me, to ensure a minimal amount of backtracking. Annoying.

Disgea: Hour of Darkness

I had 2 saves, one with me being level 300+ and another with me at 20 something (To try out other weapons and team members, instead of pwning all with a dragon and an axe...) one day I was playing my second save and went to save and I accidentally saved over my first save...

Haven't played the game since.

I must have a curse. I lost every shiny I ever caught in Pokemon, except for Red Gyarados, to a save loss. I lost my shiny Tyranitar, Lugia, and Mew (all acquired legitimately) in Gold, and my shiny Mighthyena in Sapphire. Gold cartridges tend to lose their save files after a few years, but I simply lost the Mighthyena to some asshole who overwrote the save file when he got a hold of the Gameboy Advance.

Memory card with 1.4k hours of Vagrant story was stolen... 400 hours save of Disgaea 2 was killed by my treacherous left hand at 4am when I turned off the game midsave. 600 hours save was killed by my five year old son getting up before me and erasing it. Come to mention it, he also killed everything on that card.

Now I am going to sulk in my rage at the memory of all that.

I had a 99% completion game on San Andreas all I needed to do was find the last horseshoe which I did so I went to save it. As I saved it a black out happened which corrupted my save file for it.

Also recently I accidently repartitioned my entire hard drive losing every single save game I had on it.

Hrm... i recall that happening to very hard hardcore char in torchlight. Can't remember the exact details but it involved me not paying attention after the game crashed and getting the savegame overwriten with a corrupted save fron steam cloud. Resultet in not even displaying the character in character selection and i almost finished it.

Also i can't remember having seriously touched torchlight since the, which is sad.

Being a former avid Oblivion whore(I say former because I have two 100% completion on my friend's XBox which I barrowed several years ago, and have lost all sense of wonder in the game on my own Box.), I lost a whole day of pure fast leveling on my most recent profile by a currupt save. I didn't touch the game for about three months after that.

Tip for others: save often, never overwrite your save, and just delete all saves older than your 20 most recent saves.

Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn.

I must've been about 30 minutes away from Irenicus (final boss). I always just quicksaved my games rather than do a normal save. So one day my brother went on and quicksaved, I lost everything!

At least it's taught me a valuable lesson, haha.

Lost my Fallout 3 save. I had all stats at 100 except for barter, I had all areas explored, I had every unique weapon, I had all S.P.E.C.I.A.L.s above 7, and I had the ultimate line of perks all at level 20.
