A friend of mine had finished about 99% of all quests and missions in Guild Wars (with all expansions), had a chest full of green items, a couple of hundred k gold, and a ridiculously long list of skills. Needless to say, he also had an extremely long list of titles. Then his character vanished. He e-mailed, asking if there was any way to retrieve what he'd spent so many hours on, and basically got the reply "nope, sh*t happens"...

Since my migration from consoles I have not had this problem. There is a program called "drop box" that I copy saves to, I always back them up in at least 2 places and use multiple slots, since an incident in PoP: Warrior Within.
Yes, Drop Box is so useful. Automatic server backup ftw.

I was at the final boss in Mother 3 when I was forced to system refresh after a huge virus infestation.

I've done this to my brother by accident, playing through FF7. His was the first save file, mine was the second, we had both gone about the game in different ways, different characters/materia/weapons/sidequests etc (he was on Disc 3 and I was still halfway though 2).

I was talking to him while saving, did the same Down-Double Circle tap that I always did when saving, but this time it didn't register the [down].

It was not a fun evening after that.

A loooong time ago, my brother had a friend. We'll call him Drew. Drew, we didn't realize until later, is an idiot. But before that time, I lent him my Pokemon Blue. The one with 117/150 pokemon captured. That was huge for me, at the tender age of around 10. He comes back with it a few days later, tells me he got bored with MY file, and had started a new game.

The day of the Wii's release was a mixed bag. I was then a die-hard addict of Phantasy Star Online and had recently got my friends into it. So after getting up in the morning to get the Wii, I got back home and invited my friends over. After learning all the Wii had to offer then first-hand, we loaded up Phantasy Star and started a good several hour run.

I had a 130+ level character with an entire arsenal packing and an inventory spanning 3 characters of just good drops for future characters to have a headstart. My friend's characters were a product of such an endeavor and thus could easily ascend levels thanks to me collecting good drops perfect for speed-leveling.

After the run through, i select quit game so it can autosave. My friends were leaving and are about to retrieve their memory cards which saves one by one when quitting/autosaving. I turn my back to (don't remember) and one of my friends starts switching out memory cards...

Later on I start up phantasy star and with all do relevancy to this thread, the save data is corrupted as was the future of that friendship from that day. Not only was my phantasy star data gone but everything on that 64mb memory card (an exceptionally large memory card for gamecubes). My entire library for the gamecube including my high level character was now rendered useless/gone by a careless (or possibly jealous-sabotaging) friend. I have not played that game nor any of my gamecube games to this day.

Closest I have come to that is Super Mario World. We made it to the last level. We were heading to the boss. My buddies mom walked in the room. Stepped down to hard and knocked the cartridge loose. And we cried like babies.
Huh. Your SNES must have not been made by Nintendo then, or you'd managed to damage yours. (If anyone is about to call me a Nintendo fanboy, you haven't heard the story about that one gameboy...)

On topic, I haven't had my data corrupted directly, but... Well, I was playing Ratchet & Clank: Going Commando. Now, I love Insomniac Games. They were the people who gave us the Jak series, and Ratchet and Clank is fun as hell, too. However, I despise the vehicle sections in every game (Except maybe Ratchet: Deadlocked). Why? They are so ridiculously fucking hard. I always, and I mean always had to get a friend to do them after re-trying for the fifteenth fucking time. So, he got me past that god damn bike segment in R&C:GC about three hours in. About seven more hours of gameplay later, I hit new game by accident. I pushed the circle button out of habit from messing around with the PSP... Did I mention that the circle button makes a new game start over whatever save file is highlighted? Without user conformation?

As I just said in another topic, I save the flame wars and the trolling for YouTube.

While I didn't lose my game progress, I was trying for 100% completed achievements for Mass Effect 2 (I know, I'm a whore). I only have the Insanity achievement left and I was playing as an Vanguard. At one point, I double checked to see it was on Insanity, and it was. But what I didn't remember is that it would save changes automatically, unlike Mass Effect 1 where you had to select "save changes". Couple days later, I double checked again to discover that it was set on hardcore. Insert disappointment.

The only time I ever lost any significant amount of data was waaaaaay back when I first got my original xbox. It came with a copy of Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. I had finally completed the opening dungeon (I was really bad at games back then) and was actually making some progress, when my sister accidentally deleted my save. I got mad at her, then traded in the game.

My Guild Wars account got hacked into some time ago, I lost over 1000 hours, but I wasn't that pissed off. I had Obsidian armor and the rarest bow on my Ranger, and all of my other characters were wearing the 15k armor sets, I think my Assassin had like 3 or 4, but it wasn't important. I enjoyed earning them, and the differences were purely cosmetic, so it's not like I lost the best armor or weapon in the game, I merely lost the most expensive armor and weapon in the game. I remember having a sephis axe drop for me, requirement 8 with a +15%^50% mod on it, pretty much making me an in-game millionaire at the time. That was by far more enjoyable than the moment I bought my Obsidian armor (that was quite a "wooooo" moment though), and that's all that matters, not having the armor itself.

Plus, it gave me a reason to start again, which I did, and then I bought another account, on which I'm trying to get Obsidian armor for my Monk, but they nerfed quite a lot of the solo farms so I can only really do feather farming, which is very easy and very boring. I prefer farming the materials for the armor myself, which is a lot more fun, but no, it's nerfed.

Oh yeah, I lost my save on Oblivion too, which kinda sucked.. and Battlefield: Bad Connection 2 won't let me save, I've tried to start the campaign 3 times now and every time I quit and come back it says my save is corrupted. Fuck it, I'm not doing that first mission again. I don't know why I wanted to do it in the first place, the story will suck gigantic dick anyway.

*Sniff* All those hours poured into Oblivion... All accidentality overwritten by a new character during a bit of friendly banter with my friends. Why could I have paid more attention?! WHY?!?!

As you can see, I am distraught over losing all my hours in Oblivion. I still haven't gone back to that game, I can't bring myself to play it again.

Something like that happened with my Spiderman 2 save. Except that I accidentally overwrote my save with my sister's, Which I was doing it for her because I didn't want something like that to happen.

I've got two examples, who both include games made by Bethesda. Hmmm...

Anywho, my first example was with Fallout 3, the first game I got for my PS3 a year or so ago. My brother and I had yet to fully work out all the kinks concerning the use of accounts, so he was using my user profile when he played. And he had yet to understand how the saving system worked in Fallout 3, so about a week or two after we got it, he managed to overwrite my 50+ hours save. Since I hadn't thought it necessary to make a back-up save, I lost all of it.
I was grumpy when I found out, to say the least.

My second example is with TES IV: Oblivion, where I met the inevitable bug during the Vampirism Cure-quest where the old lady refused to accept my bloodgrass. Since I wasn't going to remain a vampire, and had no saves from before I turned, I had to make a new character. This was maybe 20 hours in.
I got grumpy that time as well...

While this example isn't something to do with saves, it still ruined my game.

Every single copy of "The Orange Box" that I bought got scratched. I bought it three times for 360, and I just re-bought it from Steam.
