This. A New Zealand immigrant has explained this to me.SBoggart said:Australia is the America to New Zealand's Canada.
This is what I know.
Just one point I'd like to make. Aborigine is a general term referring to indigenous peoples globally. However, it's usage in Australia is as a general word for indigenous Australians. Largely because no one bothered to learn all the names of the 250+ "peoples" that were reduced by %80 within the first 130 years of Australia being discovered. We really didn't care about them. In fact they were officially listed as being "native flora and fauna" well into the 80's.Neverhoodian said:-snip-
This is basically true but Queensland is reputedly stronger in accents than the rest... Maybe Northern Territory as well... and as a general rule the further in and isolated the stronger the accent.Tower 87 said:Tough one for me, I think the further north the hotter the accent. although sometimes its hard to know where a specific American accent comes from. That's one fairly unique thing about Australia, we all sound pretty much the same all over the country.Dags90 said:Where do American accents fall in there?
LIKE AMERICA!?!? Please stop saying this it's not doing good things for my patriotism.innocentEX said:Australia is alot like America

Ahh, I might have just got it mixed up with something... don't like 90% of the people or something live along the coast (like not directly on, but on the coast as opposed to towards the middle)? Maybe that was what I was thinking...Isaac The Grape said:Assassin Xaero said:Majority of the country is uninhabitable desert (?)
Kinda. But, not really, but...
Just look at this picture. No I'm not going to upload it to ImageShack.

About 80% of all the population lives within 500KM of the coast. People do live in the middle of Australia (there's a town called Alice Springs that is on the map purely because of this) it's just that aside from mining there's very little reason to do so.Assassin Xaero said:Ahh, I might have just got it mixed up with something... don't like 90% of the people or something live along the coast (like not directly on, but on the coast as opposed to towards the middle)? Which sucks because unless its a global release we never get games on time! Do you know how long it took to get Super Smash Bros. Brawl here in Ausland? A long timeMcupobob said:People in Australian live one day into the future.
Now that's just not true. I live in a small country town, and there's racism and homophobia aplenty. I think as you get closer to a city, larger population ensures you'll find greater numbers of racists/homophobics (idiots) but the percentage remains more or less the same...joshuaayt said:*In the various suburbs around the city, racism and homophobia are basically the status quo- in fact, I believe it could be mapped on a chart, the proximity to Major City vs dickishness of local populace.
Come on. Tell me what isn't awesome about that.I said:All the wildlife and plants are out to get you. So, it's basically like a Death World. Even kangaroos can kill you!
To easy. Julia Gillard is currently PM.Tower 87 said:Back to Topic
