What Do You Think of "Kill la Kill"?

I like the show, but I think calling the power suits Goku Uniforms is a bit of an exaggeration. From what I've seen so far, none of the kids would have even been a match for Krillin. (I would have said Roshi, but girls dressed like that are his Kryptonite). Also, I'm unimpressed by Ryuko's intelligence. I mean,
Gamagori's "shackle regalia" renders him invulnerable but immobile, but it never occurs to her to just throw him out of the ring, even after being explicitly told ring-outs count in the match!

Bull.

While it's true that the words for "Uniform" and "Conquest" are the same, "seifuku", they use completly different Kanji, and are completly different words.
We were talking about the word Seifuku, not the Kanji of it.

Dude, it's skimpy outfits made for you to drool over, if they tried to make a point of it, they wouldn't make it sexy.
Except, when the entire point is that being sexy doesn't somehow make you lesser via being objectified, and that being who you are, even if it means idiots will ogle over you, can only make you stronger, making it not sexy would defeat the point.

You can't throw Gamagori outside the ring... he is too heavy, and any force you use to try to push him off would give him power to activate the scourge regalia.

I really think it's hilarious how people are defending obvious fansevice. Dude, it's skimpy outfits made for you to drool over, if they tried to make a point of it, they wouldn't make it sexy. yes, you can actually turn nudity into something that's not made for you to jerk off at, and it doesn't look like this.
People say this but its generally understood that suckerpunch did the EXACT same thing with live action fighting and actually carried it off really well (depending on who you talk to).

The idea being that that in the movie the main cast had to dance and perform with a bunch of fat men watching her and her talent was losing herself in the art so she could put up with the oggling gaze of a load of creepy dudes. Only you dont see those dudes very often, its mostly implied from the strip club scene and the conversations about the performance. The movie makes the audience the creepy men staring at her. It makes you feel kinda bad for being the EXACT same bad guy as the movie shows. Movie bob explains it well.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/the-big-picture/6247-You-Are-Wrong-About-Sucker-Punch-Part-One

I think thats exactly what Kill la Kill is trying to do.

Kill la Kill is subversive because the main character is extremely self concious about the load of students oggling her in that outfit. A LOT of the speech is her rationalising the fact people are being really creepy staring at her whenever she fights. Its a personal challenge for the hero to accept and OVERCOME people like YOU, the viewer. The show goes right out and says people doing what YOU are doing now are actively one of the protagonists hurdles that she needs to overcome. You ARE the badguy because youre doing exactly what the students in the show are doing and she has to work hard to overcome that. I thought it was clever but it didnt capture me mainly because i already kinda explored that theme in suckerpunch and i didnt really need it again.

How exactly do you plan to throw him? Assuming you can pick him up, do you honestly thing he is going to let you pick him up and throw him out of the arena without trying to beat you with whips? Which could probably use to swing back up to the arena anyway?

Ryuko is a hell of a lot smarter than your average shonen fighting protagonist. She is smart enough to run away from a fight when outclassed, attempted to escape a fight when she gained the ability to fly to take out her #1 target, used pieces of Senketsu to cover up her enemies eyes and render them blind, among other various plans made up on the fly. Like tying a thread around her scissor blade to lasso Nonon's gunship and drop it out of the sky. When she actually starts fighting like your typical shonen hero, this happens. I'll have to give this show a watch, if it's anything like DBZ I'll probably enjoy it, "despite" the fanservice.
I'd say it's better. Alot better.

Seems like a shallow anime that?s not especially entertaining or worth my time. Lazy writing and repetitive fights. I also think the show is nowhere near as good as people say it is. It's like Dragonball Z, but with heavy amounts of fanservice. It's alright if you like that stuff, but it's not for me.
It is absolutely not Dragonball Z. No fight has been repeated twice and all of them contributed to the plot in some way. The story is tightly written instead of being made up on the fly. The "new powers out of nowhere" is foreshadowed beforehand and only used during the battles with the Elite Four, and the fact that Senketsu is evolving quickly is a plot point that is revealed in episode 12. The four extra forms she gets are actual evolutions instead of just longer hair and crazy stat boosts, like changing into a jet fighter for example. You are going to have to explain what you mean by "lazy writing" because if you haven't even seen it, I'm betting you just pulled that out of your ass.

I had a chuckle at "not especially entertaining." You can have your opinions though, even if they mean little because you haven't actually watched the show.

I got my terms mixed up, here is a better explanation.

If Kill la Kill wanted you to jerk off to it, it probably would present itself completely differently. Almost all of the "fanservice" shots are so ridiculous that they are silly as oppose to sexy. They also tend to pass quickly, don't occur twice in a row, and are overshadowed by the rest of the awesomeness happening on screen. And when these moments aren't occuring during fight scenes involving Kamui, the camera usually focuses on places that matter, like the characters faces and so on and so forth. The rest of fanservice throughout the show isn't all that frequent, and makes an honest attempt at equal opportunity (Sanageyama, Aikuro, Tsumugu and Gamagoori have all spent significant amounts of time on the screen while naked or nearly naked). And a fanservice show wouldn't have turned Ryuko into... just watch episode 12 or click the link above. It's even more horrific in action.

There is also the fact that it portrays everyone who think of Ryuko as a sex object instead of a person as disgusting/greasy losers while everyone who treats her with respect are pretty respectable people in their own way. And the fact that this show doesn't have any sort of male audience surrogate like Kirito so you can have weird fantasies. Also, they could have handled Mako and Ryuko's relationship a lot differently (in a very bad way), but the way it is presented is actually heartwarming and adorable as oppose to providing fetish fuel for yuri fanboys. Let them marry Trigger, or I'll riot.

Also this show passes the Bechdel Test in every way imaginable.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test

1. It has more then two females in it - Way more than two females!
2. Who talk to each other - Many many conversations.
3. About something besides a man - All conversation in this anime.

In fact this anime almost fails the Bechdel Test for guys.
It goes pretty far beyond the requirements. Going strictly by power levels of action-based characters, the girls have ALL the top spots.

Tsumugu < Inmuta < Gamagoori < Sanageyama < Nonon < Ryuko < Nui < Satsuki < Mako (with the power of friendship!)

Not to mention we have Ragyo stepping onto the scene, a women so powerful she emits fucking rainbows from her body, a wardrobe full of Kamui, 7 stars weaved into her back, and controls 70% of the worlds fashion industry, which puts her handily above Satsuki. How this show could possibly be misogynist at this point is beyond my comprehension.

Well, just because the show points at itself and goes "Look how skeezy this is, ain't it dumb", doesn't make it any less skeezy.

The whole design is super fetishizing and in no way meant to deter the audience from salivating over it. Which is fine, but don't try to apply some point to it, because there isn't any.

It's trying have its cake and eat it.

As for the show itself... There's definately talent on display here, it's just a shame it's all spent on crazy for the sake of crazy. But then I'm not a fan at all of the most badass awesome show ever, Gurren Lagann.
(wow look at me bringing up a dead thread)

I recently had an interest in watching this anime as stream with my friends but...those outfits just really grate on me in the worst ways. and if what I'm hearing of the second episode is true...I don't know if I'll be pushing through that show at all.

I just...I can't get over how skimpy it is. Do these cons outweigh the positives? (providing you watched it up to date) Or is it something that I should skip if sleazy outfits aren't my thing? Which is a shame because if they added a lot more fabric those would of been the coolest powerup suits I've seen in a very long time.

I couldn't get past episode 2, so I wouldn't know. But apparently episode 4 or something is unbearable even for fans of the show.

It doesn't get better? Oh well then.

Shame, I really like the studios other animation Little Witch Academia, which is the exact opposite of this show. So much so it's surprising that they are the same studio.
