What does post count mean to you?

This has always been something that I have been curious about.

For me, the post count means two things:
1. How long someone has been on The Escapist
2. How loud their "voice" is

The first is easy to explain. Someone with 10k posts has been posting for a really long time. It doesn't matter if they post in RP threads or are having a back and forth discussion with 2 people about whether pancakes are better than waffles, padding post count on these forums is somewhat pointless--other boards have direct benefits for post count--and is a really tedious affair if you're going just for number.

The second is kind of hard to explain. Obviously, what someone says in their post is what is important, and it doesn't matter whether they have 10 posts or 10k posts. But when I am going through threads and scanning posts, I tend to pick out certain posts above others based on the post count. I don't just decide what to read and not read based on post count--obviously there are other factors that determine what I do and don't read--and even this translates into recognizing certain posters rather than their post count (or because of their post count I suppose).

So my question to you is this:
What does a user's post count mean to you?

Edit: I think it would be interesting if there was a way to see how many posts a user has made in each of the major boards (gaming, off topic, etc). Most of mine would be in off topic, lol.

The only use a post count has for me is a quick troll/spam-bot check.

Do they have an inflammatory post or a "See this video LOL!" link? If they have a handful of posts, they're probably a troll/spam-bot.

I've been here for over four years but have very few posts.

A chance to get the Neo badge. Also as a sign of how often people post here, and possibly how well known they are within the community. I mostly judge people according to their avatars though.

They mean EVERYTHING!!!!

Don't you understand, it's a conspiracy!!!!

The amount of posts you have, the more you control the escapist and the internet!!

How many times they've posted. That's it. Post count is not a factor for me when it comes to deciding to read or not read someones post.

I dunno, once I hit the 1000 post mark I guess I felt like I was actually a part of the community.

How could I take offence to your lesser user group/forum games posts. A real poster posts in the posty-est of posting boards, the Off topic/Gaming discussion threads!

Only joking of course man.

When people make really questionable posts and threads I do check their post count, but other than that it just tells me how active they are when I look at it in relation to their joining date.

I'm pretty sure we all do that.
Just like when you see someone that is quite obviously trolling, they usually have a <10 post count.
The only time I've seen someone with a >1k post count trolling, is when they were really mad, or suiciding their account.
I've actually seen more >10k accounts suicide, than <10k, lol.

It is the obvious thing to do really.

I rarely have seen an account suicide, though I did see it a few days ago. Think he was under 10k. Don't see so many 10k+ people, much less ones that are suicidal.
"I see you have 5 posts and joined less than an hour ago. I would read your thoughts on a certain game's ending, but I know you are trolling." *hits report*

What an interesting couple weeks that was...

Still, jealous that I joined only a month after you and you're outdoing me by a little less than 3.5k posts. Probably because I didn't start out as active as I am now. Used to have a major presence elsewhere.
You know, the combination of my join date and post count is actually rather embarrassing.

[sub]Yes I have no life.[/sub]
Lol, I've been here for about a year and a half longer than you have, and you have over double my post count.
I don't really post that much, and most of my posts are either starting threads or trying to keep them going. I post in the random thread here and there, but I don't get into long winded 4 page discussions too often.

And then I go a few weeks without posting anything at all, lol.

I avoided those discussions like the plague after the first few. And I still saw enough to represent the whole thing *sigh*
Agreed. I looked around in the first few and I think I posted in a couple, but after the first couple days and subsequent rage started to pick up, I just avoided them altogether. Its like whenever I see a "what is up with MLP:FiM?" thread. I'll pop in, see if the OP actually did make another one of those bloody threads, and then go on my way after quoting the 15+ people telling them to use the forum search bar.

Ya I was the same way actually. When I hit the thousand mark I felt like some people may recognize me and same goes backwards.

Lies! I've seen you post like once or twice back when I used to check the Katawa Shoujo user group. You know, before it got so active that I had to turn off the notices. -__-

Still, jealous that I joined only a month after you and you're outdoing me by a little less than 3.5k posts. Probably because I didn't start out as active as I am now. Used to have a major presence elsewhere.[/quote]

In the days of yesteryore, long before the advent of pub club, badges and even more than two subforums under the label of "Discussion," post count was worth paying attention to. Going Gonzo was a big milestone. A high post count didn't mean anyone was more important or a better user than anyone else, but it had some real meaning.

Since usergroups became a thing, and there are now legitimate ways of posting one-word comments that count towards one's post count, the number's lost most of its value. Still, with the boom of the Escapist population, I'd say "good riddance." Post count elitism is largely a thing of the past. :)

That being said, what my post count means to me is what it meant for everyone back in the day. I hardly ever use forum games or usergroups, so for me, this number marks my text contributions to the forum's community. I take a bit of personal pride in it, though I don't expect anyone else to care. I just can't quit love the Escapist.

Edit: Woah, only a couple posts away from 8,500 posts! :0

The higher someone's post count the more I assume that person is recognized (for good or ill) by others. Might not be the case, but it's what I think. Other than that, not much.
