The only thing I remember is only caring about filling my wagon with ammunition and stopping every quarter mile to hold a vote that the train should go hunting. Characters could only hold 200 pounds of meet at a time, and we always had plenty of food, but that didn't stop me or anyone else from blasting everything in sight to Narnia, even if we didn't need to.

It ended there sir. Started on the East coast. It was all about the trek from the east to the west - pioneers, were they not?

It ended there. It was not about the great migration east because, well, there wasn't one.

There's prolly some free version of it, since its deemed educational.
I hated the game 'cause my father tried to have me play it, and I got killed by a snake.
I always got dysentry.

Ah the Oregon Trail, takes me back to when I was 4 years old and first learning how to use a computer.

Woah, Oregon trail. I spent most of my elementary school days on that. As did everyone else in my class. The most memorable death message I remember was when I was "ravaged by a cougar". I am completely serious. And you always caulked the wagon and floated, or got the ferry. Fording had a death rate of something like 80%.

Edit- And I killed so many animals that eventually there were none left. I could sit for a full 10 minutes and not see a single squirrel. Of course, the hardcore way to play is to start with 0 food, 0 money, 0 ammunition. Just lots of grandfather clocks.

I hate to say this but...
Were you paying attention in school?
(and please don't tell me you aced it with flying colors)

It ends there, as manifest destiny called for.

Anyone play that one game that was like this but pirate-y? You had little point-and-click fights against famous pirates, and tried to get to the New World using currents without hitting rocks, sinking, or having everyone die of scurvy. So much fun, I always bought all the gunpowder and cannonballs I could and only lemons for the crew to eat.
I haven't played that one. It's probably because we were distracted with Sid Meyer's Pirates [http://www.mobygames.com/game-group/pirates-series] which gave you far more than an Oregon Trail like interface to conduct your freebooting.

Recently I was messing around with Rings of Zilfin [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvHfqC7Epz4] and realized it had some similarities to Oregon Trail in that you chose a direction and entered a travel simulation.

I don't remember history class and especially the history of my own nation. I do recall that my strong suits were math, english/grammar, and psychology. And my grades sucked because I was lazy.

It's named for the Oregon Trail to the northwest United Sates, and you could start in the East for a harder and longer journey, but the real ORegon Trail started in Independence Missouri, and progressed west through Kansas, Nebraska, Wyoming, Idaho, and finally Oregon.

That's what Skool Daze [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6BxBfk0LY4] was for.

Thanks for the enlightenment, dude. I'm a bit rusty on my American history, although I studied it for two years :/

The only way I can win at Oregon trail is to play as a carpenter so I can repair my wagon myself, start with 6-8 oxen and tons of food. Then you move at the fastest pace the entire time and cut everyone back to shitty rations once you hit halfway. Hunting is a waste of time.
