The only time I feel a remake is necessary is when the original game had a lot of serious problems with it, and the new game is simply trying to address those problems, while retaining most of the good parts. Otherwise, a re-release might be a better choice, in my opinion.
It's probably why I only got two on my list.
Master of Magic (PC)
This game was awesome back in the day, but suffered from massive amount of bugs and crappy AI. A remake of this where they simply tweaked the numbers for better balance, and have an added multiplayer mode would make this an instant hit.
Romancing Sa-ga 2 (SNES)
Never translated and released in the US, but wildly popular in Japan. this game was re-released on the virtual console AND on as a phone app. I would just like to see this game translated and released state side. Seriously, SE, I would pay good money for it. Hell, if I have to, I'll create your damn marketing plan for you just so it's viable enough for you to release it state side, dammit.
Final Fantasy VI. No, I'm not missing a numeral, I meant good-ol' SNES FFVI.
People need to see that that game DOES NOT and I repeat DOES NOT hold up the way they think it does in ANY category. Soundtrack, graphics, gameplay, writing, nothing. It has most certainly aged. A remake could both fight and prove that.
Oh the game would still hold up well, but reall,y go back. There are some annoying songs on that soundtrack, the battle themes are unimpressive, and some boss fights are incredibly unbalanced and unfair. That game isn't rough around the edges, it's outright jagged.
By unbalanced and unfair, do you mean piss-easy?
[sub](Hint: Cast Vanish then Doom to massacre about 75% of all bosses)[/sub]
And when that doesn't work: Genji Glove + Offering or Ultima spam work wonders. If you don't have those fancy items or spells, always remember that Sabin is a wrecking ball, Cyan's first sword ability has no extra wait time and Celes' Runic absorbs all magic.
OP: While I don't care for remakes (give me something new please), for the sake of the thread I'll say: Seventh Saga
After Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSiver came out and the possibility of a 3rd Gen remake popped up, I wasn't sure, but after Black/White and the subsequent 3DS, I began to think that actually, I would love to see Ruby/Sapphire redone. Taking advantage of the 3DS' higher graphical capabilities, Hoenn (which is probably my second favourite region after Johto) would look gorgeous, the 3D effect would be amazing within battles and the soundtrack (already the best soundtrack of the series) would clearly benefit from the higher quality audio.
Plus it would take Gen IV's stat changes, Gen V's EXP system and if the last remakes of a Pokemon game are anything to go by, make it one big love letter to its fans.

Yeah, hmm, FFIV... if I remember correctly most battles boiled down to exploiting elemental weaknesses. But yeah there were a few slightly more dificult fights - Fatal Eye (10 seconds to death)- that's all I got.
Sorry, I beat that game so many times as a kid that I just find it too easy as well. Hell, I played so much that I decided to grind a level 99 Dark Knight Cecil for shits and giggles. Porom and Palom were not too shabby either (Palom had Meteo before Tellah, and could actually cast it, haha)...
Waitaminute - did you just call FFIV's soundtrack unimpressive? GRRR!
And of course it's a bit rough around the edges by todays standards, it was made in friggin' 1991 on the SNES!!!
Well the sound quality was low by Uematsu's addmitance, but I meant some of the songs. The town song gets on my nerves after a while, and "Final Battle" is seriously lacking focus. Oh, and don't get me started on the fact that every note in "Fabul" sounds like they whammy bar'd the fuck out of it.
The boss fight I'm thinking of particularly is Golbez after he uncontrollably slaughters your party and Rydia shows back up. Granted, I'm playing on Active and mx battle speed, and the DS version, which I hear is the tiniest bit harder, but seriously, overpowered much?

I think FFVIII is a perfect candidate for this. It was just shy of perfection, really.
Two things:
A) Re-write, some of the events in that game were absurd.
B) Eliminating or seriously inflating the amount of possible drawn spells per turn.
If we have to cap it, make it between 25-50.

Well, generally I say I reserve this treatment for games that had SERIOUS flaws like game crashing bugs. (i.e. the entire KOTOR franchise)
If I recall, FF8 has already had multiple releases, and most of the changes you're talking about are more a choice of aesthetics rather than severe game play issues. So I'd be inclined to disagree there.
To use a similar example, Chrono Trigger has already seen 3 remakes. It is also one of the most popular SNES games to ever hit the market. At this point, I can't imagine anyone who plays games who haven't yet played CT. Are there places for improvement? Probably. But for a similar reason, I don't think a remake is necessary.
All of the old PC games from the mid to late 90's. I want to play the Homeworld games again and I want to try my hand at No One Lives Forever, among others. These games were highly acclaimed when they came out, but playing them again is hard, between OS support and whatnot. Console games are easy to replay, just find a cheap-ass auction online (though good luck finding some games), but for people like me who are shit with computers beyond installing programs and getting online, there's little to no way to play PC classics that aren't supported on new OS's.
I always curse my general lack of PC gaming as a child when I go through my old gaming magazines.
