OT: I would say the greatest thing the Halo series has done, is it is the first an expanded universe has been so massive and so necessary.

They've entertained us.

They're not the greatest of games, but I'd love to see the level of customization for multiplayer games that Halo has spread to other games.

They legitimized FPSes on consoles. Simple as that, yet it's done a world of change for the console market. They were also the first games to implement mechanics like friction (reticule slowing upon moving over an enemy) which helped FPSes work better on consoles.

Plus, they're loads of fun.

A lot really:

Saved the original xbox, and therefore allowed the xobx 360 to from to form.

Proved that shooters were viable on the console.

Changed shooters in a few ways:
Gernades would considered another weapon slot, so before you had to switch to grenades in order to use while not having a gun ready after ye threw it, no grenades are more or less equipmeant rather then acutally weapons, throw a grenade and you gun is still in your hands.

Introduce regenerating shield and hp, allowing for faster pace gameplay, and allowing you to take on hordes and still be able to fight on, knowing ye be able to regen ye hp back, though I do draw then line when it is not explained, in halo mark 6 has biofoam (healing kits) built into the suit (so hp is irrevelvent), cod has no explaintion.

Thirdly, and the last one of this section I will cover, the two weapon slot. I understand the glee that can come with carrying 3+ weapons, but in a way it does kinda defeat the challage, after when you can carry all the weapons? You will never be caught unprepared for the foe at hand, tanks? rockets lauchers, long range foes? snipers rifles, close quarters combat? shotguns and submachine guns, plus geranades. With two weapon slots, you think, hmm good all roundwer weapons? long range weapons, heavy duty weapons, close quarters weapons, instead of go like ooooh weapons lets take them. Also helps define player roles in mult-player and co-op games: the sniper, the heavy weapons, the close quarters guy, the all rounder.

Brought us redvsblue and likely kicked off the machinma genre entirely.

Provides fun for millions of gamers across the world (me included)

Also deals with a rather deep theme when looked at it, The misuse of religious beliefs.
The Covenat is entirely based on the single minded belief that they will ascend to some higher plan when they activate the rings. The belief was proven wrong when they encounterd the humans which an orcale (monietor) said that humans themselves were holy relics, not the technology there were seaching for, a fact that went entirely agaisnt their religion, to safe their power, the prophets overed the exstintion of the entire human race. And when the truth of the rings true pupose came to light the elites quickly abanded the Convenat to saved the galaxery from the prophets mad plans, and svaing humanity in the process. The near destruction of an entire galaxery and because of the misuse of religious beliefs, rather deep when looked at.

At face value the games are rather shallow when it comes to story. But a look into the expaned universe show some rather deep things, watch the Halo: the return videos, a story about an Elite's jounry to redemption, while reliving his past shame.

Its a good series, plus it has to be said Bungie really cares and interacts with their fans, more so then Valve

Agreed. I've never played any of the Halo games, but I love Red vs. Blue so that's good enough for me.

Halo was just "realistic" enough for a very wide Audience which might have been turned of by games in general because they couldn't get behind some of the Compromises that are needed to make Games Fun.
Like the Health; in a War Scenario, there might be someone who gets a lucky hit and you drop dead without ever knowing what hit you. That'd be realistic but it wouldn't make a Game very Fun to play.

If you have your normal FPS Character who takes about a million Bullets to the Head and still is fine so long he tapes some Healthkit to his Balls and tell someone who never played Games before that this still makes for a gripping Challenge he will not believe you.

Halo solves that little Problem by having the Power Armor. The Power Armor allows for easier Suspension of Disbelief because now the Protagonist is a Supersoldier in hyper advanced Scifi Armor, instead of just being able to absorb more Bullets then a small Nation's Army because the Game needs it to be so.

Okay so I'm fairly new to the world of Space Marine FPS excitement but I've always been skeptical about people singing the praises of the Halo franchise, to me it just seems a touch bland and uninspiring to venture further into the whole sub-genre.

Anyways, what with the re-release of the original game and the announcement of Halo 4 way back in the year, I thought it might be interesting to start up a discussion a la the People's Front of Judea/Judean People's front/etc. of "What have the Halo games ever done for us?"
In essence, it revolutionized the FPS formula as we know it. There's no hyperspace arsenal to speak of, so you can only carry two main weapons at a time, forcing you to think about what to carry and what would be most appropriate for your situation; grenades and melee attacks are their own separate buttons and don't count toward that 2-weapon limit; vehicles are prevalent and are integrated seamlessly into gameplay so if you run across a jeep, or a hoverbike, or a tank, or even a Space Plane, you can jump right in and the game shifts instantly to a third-person perspective, with no loading screen or separate map or anything. While none of these things were new in themselves, Halo was the first to combine them all together into something good, which has been followed by nearly every modern FPS since.

Yes, for if it wasn't for Halo then Zombie Hitler would have risen up to send is armies out to conquer the world. Thankfully he now spends his days in SP and Mp under the gamer-tag xXJewHaterassassinghostXXx.
That was the most awesome thing I have seen today.

One of the big things with Halo was successfully bringing the FPS to consoles. They made it easier to play with a controller and sent it to mainstream gaming.

Popularized the FPS genre on consoles. I don't like the Halo games much but there's no denying that it was a major force in making devs want to make shooters on consoles and opened up a fresh market from the PC crowd.

I could go into a massive essay about how the haters are just hating, and listing point by point all the things the Halo series did spectacularly right, but in order to save on space, I'll try and limit it to a few key points.

Firstly, you have to look at the context of the time. Before Halo, the only console shooters that anyone had even heard of were Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Timesplitters. And while Goldeneye and PD were instrumental at getting FPS's onto the consoles, they were hardly without faults. Certainly in the control department, Goldeneye and PD both now handle like complete arse, thanks in no small part to the unwieldy N64 controller and its single analogue stick.

Halo, along with Timesplitters, showed that you could make a first-person shooter that not only worked on a console, but worked beautifully. Moreover, where Timesplitters was almost entirely focused on multiplayer, Halo CE had a massive single-player campaign unlike anything else at the time. FPS' at the time were still largely enclosed, corridor-based affairs. Halo used that template for the opening level, then proceeded to throw the player into a wide, expansive world full of epic levels. This was a game where vehicles could freely be commandeered in order to get from one side of the level to the other. Perhaps most importantly, it was a game that had absolutely brutal AI. For the time it was released, Halo's AI was absolutely top-of-the-shelf, boasting enemies that exhibited all sorts of adaptive behaviour depending on how the player acted.

Secondly, Halo was one of the first, and to this day still one of the only, shooters to focus on emergent action as opposed to scripted set-pieces. In order to understand what I mean, you really need to compare it to something like Modern Warfare. In the Modern Warfare games, action in the single-player game is largely scripted, and revolves around pre-arranged set-pieces that deviate very little from playthrough to playthrough. They allow for bigger bangs and more spectacular sequences, sure, but they also get very repetitive after more than one playthrough. In contrast, action in Halo is largely non-scripted, and is defined between the Covenant/Flood AI and the player's actions. While this means that Halo usually lacks the spectacular set-pieces of the COD games, it allows the player to create their own set-pieces, using the game's mechanics as tools with which to do so. If you want to run up to an enemy tank, plant a grenade, then escape away on the back of a friendly Warthog before it blows up, the game will allow you to do so. Alternatively, instead of grenades, you may want to ride shotgun in said Warthog while AI (or preferably a co-op teammate) drives, using a rocket-launcher to take out the tank while your team-mate drives the Warthog over a spectacular jump. Or you both may decide to ride Ghosts instead, making a convoy that destroys the tank through sheer relentless firepower.

That is where the real joy of the campaign, and indeed multiplayer, resides. Being able to pull off crazy stunts and action sequences, not becase the game scripted them, but because you wanted to see if you could pull it off. That's something that even modern shooters rarely allow for.

Lastly, Halo 2 standardised online-multiplayer for console FPS's. After Xbox Live was released, but before Halo 2 came out, online shooters were a weird mish-mash of ideas. Some games would have some features, others would have others, but none had what we would recognise today as the fundamental basics of online multiplayer. Halo 2 was released and not only offered the best online action of any shooter at the time, it also standardised how games should go about handling their multiplayer. Every online shooter running on a console today owes a debt to Halo 2. That game was the single most important multiplayer shooter since Unreal.

Ultimately, it's one of those "You had to have been there" kind of things. You need to imagine a scene without Call Of Duty, Resistance, Killzone, Gears, Half-Life 2, Bioshock, etc, in order to appreciate what Halo brought to the table. At the time Halo came out, Half-Life One was seen as the pinnacle of the FPS genre. That's how far back we're going.
*slow clap*
Brought a tear to my eye.
Halo, to me, means hours of gaming with multiple friends, all nighters with varieties of pop, and after school unwinding with an xbox controller in hand. In short friends good times and the most "DID YOU SEE THAT"'s that i have ever heard

For the industry it was one of the first FPS's on the consols that started the moving of PC to consol.
It also gave us the regenorating sheild that ballenced games better than the simple health pack system could.
You cannot forget the multiplayer, it was again one of the first games to do that on the consol and I think the first online multiplayer game.

It was a good well polished game in of itsels and in general was a pritty good game.

Since then not much changed everything was refined but no big changes.

It made the xbox extremely popular. That's probably done more for the industry than most people would like to admit, as saving the xbox was akin to giving indie developers yet another place to sell their games through the marketplace that was brought out later.

I can't be arsed to say any other reasons as they've already been said, however i will say:

Oi, just because Halo did regenerating health and two weapon systems right doesn't mean it's their fault that other developers suck at it. That's like saying if I invented something decent, all the people inventing useless crap are now my responsibility.

Pretty much Red Vs Blue, creation of tea bagging and I guess created the xbox community since Halo was one of the first games to be relase on it.
