It depends on the rifle and what you’re shooting. For reference, I think .223 Remington is very similar to the 5.56 they use in M4s or M16. And 30-06 I’m pretty confident is what your granddaddy’s M1 Garand or Lee Enfield fired.Rifle ammo can be smaller than I assumed.

You're half right. The Lee-Enfield fired .303 British, which was slightly less powerful than the 30-06.
