A little context, you could sell my gf the clothes she's already wearing, so she is Apple's ideal customer. The day she upgraded, she was actually just going in to have the screen repaired on her old phone, but got upsold the full upgrade the second I turned my back. She just got mad because I was calling bullshit to the salesperson's face making them both visibly uncomfortable which was the only dignity I could squeeze out of the whole charade. Then I had to listen to her b*tch about how her new phone isn't appreciably different from her old phone, just like she has her past 3-4 upgrades over our 10 years together.Sheesh, tell us how you really feel
I forgive you.I have come to appreciate Apple a little more.
I never thought of cast iron being the standard for daily cooking. In my +45 years of being in kitchens, cast iron has always been for very specific purposes; stainless steel/non-stick has been what I've used by default. I once thought I was being helpful when I washed my mom's cast iron skillet, and you've have thought she caught me making a human sacrifice in her sink. We break out the cast iron maybe twice a year for specific dishes; stainless steel/non-stick does the heavy lifting the rest of the time. I'm happy for the quality of life improvement you've discovered; welcome to now, my friend!Anyway, my girlfriend and I bought a bunch of stainless steel cookware. I was used to cast iron, whereas she was using non-stick. After a few months of use, gotta say, I am loving stainless steel. Sometimes I fuck up and things stick, but generally we've been able to cook all sorts of stuff without any issues. We have salmon sliding around like its on skates.
We just bought basic Ikea stuff, but I sure am tempted to get something more expensive. Maybe carbon steel even.
Blugh, salespeople like that are parasitic. I get it's their job but come on >3>A little context, you could sell my gf the clothes she's already wearing, so she is Apple's ideal customer. If I hadn't lived it for 10 years, it'd almost be funny. When I pointed out she'd need a new charger, she literally asked the sales guy "which charger do most people buy" (y'know, like most people ask a sales person how much they should spend?), then got mad when I answered for him and said "let me guess, the most expensive one you sell, right?" She was mortified, and he looked at me like I was the asshole shouting out loud how a magician does his tricks while he's performing. Of course it WAS the most expensive charger AND cable, both of which she bought. And she boasted that her bill was only going up $10 before I had to reminded her it was going to go DOWN almost $100 if she'd have just paid off her old phone in a couple of months. Then she spent the next two days bitching about how it's no better than what she had and how she doesn't like the nominal changes they did make. Maybe I don't hate Apple; maybe I just hate my gf...Blugh, salespeople like that are parasitic. I get it's their job but come on >3>
My reply was a little more directed towards the stuff I quoted in your post, but after a situation like that I'd be pissed about it too
The charger doesn't come with the phone?!?! Isn't a basic feature of buying a phone (or say laptop) is getting a charger (especially a premium device)? I got a OnePlus Nord N30 for $250 last August and it came with a 50W charger (since super charging is one of its features). My phone bill is $15/month, I really don't understand how/why people have such high phone bills. My company gives us $100/month for our phones (for email use and what not, I only have Teams on my phone). My phone bill is technically -$85/month.If I hadn't lived it for 10 years, it'd almost be funny. Long story short: Apple's gonna Apple, and my gf is a fucking genius.
No, the phone did not come with a charger; it only came with a short USB-C to USB-C charging cable, and the adapter to plug that into was a separate $40 purchase, and she had to buy a longer cable so like $60 later. The three chargers she had for her old phone were rendered obsolete because "iPhone 17 Pro Max is new, so we changed the charger because you will pay for a new charger."The charger doesn't come with the phone?!?! At this point not many phones come with chargers anymore, just a short usb cable. My S22 ultra didn't come with one either. The charger doesn't come with the phone?!?! When l bought my Samsung phone, it came with a limited time freebie! Which turned out to just be a charger, that was annoyingly a different color to the cable the phone comes with.At this point not many phones come with chargers anymore, just a short usb cable. That's crappy that they give you a USB-C to C cord instead of an A to C cord, which then could be used with the older wall charger. Though, I'm guessing you could've bought any A to C cord unless Apple makes it so only their cords work. And by adapter, do you mean that tiny A to C dongle? I got one of those free with my Klipsch earbuds. No, the phone did not come with a charger; it only came with a short USB-C to USB-C charging cable, and the adapter to plug that into was a separate $40 purchase, and she had to buy a longer cable so like $60 later. As for high phone bills, I guess it depends on what you use your phone for. If you're okay with basic calling and texting, yes, there are a lot of plans/options where you can get a minimal bill. But if you're like a lot of people (I'll use myself as an example,) I call and text, but also stream a lot of videos and music which merits my unlimited data option which is more expensive. Mine is also not paid for with a $100/month stipend by my employer.

It seems Apple changes the combination every iteration solely to put customer in a position to have to buy new accessories. It used to be their proprietary connection to their proprietary charging box, then it was to a USB to their proprietary connection, now it's USB-C to USB-C which is arguably more universal, but far from their previous practices of switching shit up just enough that your new phone demands additional investment for basic operation. The thing that killed me was when (a couple of iPhones ago,) my gf had to buy an adapter for a headphone jack since they designed the phone so that the charging port and audio out were the same connection. I scoffed at her, then went to upgrade my Android only to see they did the same shit. I keep Bluetooth headphones handy now, but still had to invest in an adapter of my own when wireless headphones inevitably die. At this point, the biggest "innovation" either side could do is reinstate the dedicated headphone jack, and they'd look like the most benevolent genius on the market selling what is old as new. That's crappy that they give you a USB-C to C cord instead of an A to C cord, which then could be used with the older wall charger. With wifi being so commonplace everywhere now, I'm on wifi well over 90% of the time so I don't really care too much about data limits. I only ever used up all my data a couple months back when my internet went out at home for a week.

Funnily enough, the cheaper you go with phones, the more they give you. My previous phone from some random Chinese brand came with the fastest charger I've ever had and a free case.
XD Yeeeah. I wouldn't say hate her, but god that all sounds infuriating to have to deal with. Doesn't help you've been getting salespeople that have been complete rats about it as well.Maybe I don't hate Apple; maybe I just hate my gf...
I meeeaaannn, wasn't it the pro-consumer side of the debate begging Apple to go USB-C like everyone else? So now that they were forced to we've got people complaining they went to USB-C...? Like, I get it's annoying, but the standard has to move along from the old one sometime, right? Unless the preference would've been USB-A for the charging blocks and USB-C for the cable ends for our phones/devices. But with everything else slowly moving along to USB-C then it's inevitable the charging blocks would follow suit. Standards change. People have to buy the stuff needed to make the switch. No, the phone did not come with a charger; it only came with a short USB-C to USB-C charging cable.

Oh, I'm not complaining that they made the switch to USB-C whatsoever; I'm complaining that they've changed the charging cables/block every iteration of their "new" phones every time just to sell the necessary peripherals. They didn't improve charging capabilities, they simply made it mandatory that you buy new chargers because... you had to if you wanted to charge your new phone. I wouldn't be surprised if the next iPhone has still USB-C to USB-C, but the charging block is shaped like a middle finger, and you have to buy an adapter to plug it into any standard outlet.I meeeaaannn, wasn't it the pro-consumer side of the debate begging Apple to go USB-C like everyone else? Now, granted, this isn't to say that Apple can't include their own charging block with each phone anyways. They can. And they should. But "We're trying to be more green" was their initial excuse, and it was a laughable one at the time and still is, and screw them for being the biggest trend setters in the industry. But also screw everyone else for following along what they do anyways (looking at you Samsung, you cowards)
My phone still has a headphone jack but honestly, it is becoming pretty useless, it's pretty hard to go back to corded headphones after getting wireless earbuds just a couple years back. I've only used the headphone jack like twice in the last year, once on vacation getting some super cheap wired earbuds on the road trip (as I didn't bring my earbuds), and then very occasionally at work to troubleshoot an audio issue (to bypass the PC and make sure it's not a PC issue). It seems Apple changes the combination every iteration solely to put customer in a position to have to buy new accessories. When I wasn't working from home, my wireless earbuds would often die over the course of my 8-hour workday, so wired earbuds made sense to have in my backpack, so the practicality of a headphone jack has never gone away as I imagine a lot of people might want headphone fidelity regardless of charging capability. Because there is a solution to a created problem does not negate the fact that the problem was manufactured, i.e.: if I prick your finger with a safety pin, but I have a band-aid to stop the ensuing bleeding, I have not "solved" for the fact that I pricked your finger in the first place. Maybe there's a technical reason to remove a once basic feature, but I find it hard to believe given they solved for it in the same breath with peripherals that fix it. I used to be able to charge my phone AND listen to music via earbuds at the same time; now I have to choose one or the other; selling me Bluetooth earbuds is a solve, but also unnecessary when older phones literally didn't require it.My phone still has a headphone jack but honestly, it is becoming pretty useless, it's pretty hard to go back to corded headphones after getting wireless earbuds just a couple years back.
