What is an acceptable desktop for a man? (Or due to responses, what does a REAL man have?)

If the girl had worn that much armor and a helmet, I'm sure nobody would've cared to make remarks about it.
Your points are well made, and I do agree the level of sexualisation is very different but within context a muscle bound group of men in armor or a woman standing in a coat should be on a similar level - but because of who decided to displayit this creates the eyebrow raising.

Also, not that I am a poor sport or anything but here is a spartan-lady:

Alright its a fanart, but it's not that easy to find one!

It's amazing how many people have come back saying they have the inky blackness of infinity as their wallpaper. I always thought that having an interesting desktop was a little little visual flavour to the otherwise average day.

I see now I am a big girl's blouse - real men dont stimulate their optic nerves like that, that's for chumps.

I don't have pictures of any women (Anime or otherwise) as my desktops for a few reasons, I don't really have pictures to put up (Except maybe Samus Aran...), my computer is in the living room and is easily visible to anyone who is in there (And is where people go when they are in the house) and I also spend alot of time staring at my desktop gormlessly while thinking of lots of things (Which would get me a few more strange looks, especially if I had the Yuna picture...)

On the other hand though I've been to friends houses who have their computers in their room, away from their families and they tend to have alot of pictures ranging from anime characters (Fully clothed) to outright pictures of porn (Along with matching posters across the walls) I don't judge them, It's their personal space they can do what they like, whether it be admiring anime/game characters they liked or if they just liked porn.

As a side note: I think that anime/games characters wearing very little would be more tolerable than for example the Megan Fox picture as CG characters are designed a certain way, real people usually have pictures where they are wearing clothes.

This is what I have on my desktop at work, spread across two monitors:

At first I just thought it looked neat, but now it's grown on me.

Real Men use CLIs. None of this wussy "graphical user interface" nonsense.
And, my good sir, what is the default colour of a CLI? =]

I now have a picture of my two year old daughter in her "princess dress" sitting on an old chair she calls her "fone" at my parents house.
It always freaked out the IT guys at work.

Mine is a Victorian Era Velociraptor riding a bicycle captioned with the word "Bitches".

Yes. It is awesome.

You know, in the end I think you can't win no matter what you do. If you pick an image that pleases your family then you won't probably like it. So just wallpaperize your desktop with whatever you want and act proud in front of everyone. Sooner or later they'll have to stop bugging you when they notice that their teasing has no affect on you.

It's kind of like wearing clothes, isn't it? You can't please everyone, so just pick with whatever you think is best. I'd say go with eyecandy if that's what you want. After all, you'll be the one using the computer, right?

I used to have a background of this massive cat sitting next to a lighthouse, both of them towering over a small ocean-side town.
Mind sharing a link? Lighthouse + giant cat sounds like a nice change to my current boring desktop.

I don't think anyone would think you were a homosexual for having a background with a bunch of Spartans from Halo as your desktop. They're not "Muscley Men", they're wearing huge suits of armor. Same goes for Space Marines.

The fact that it's a Halo background, on the other hand.....

wish i knew a website to get nice wallpapers...

anyway how do you know the men in halo are muscle bound? they could be blubbery or skinny and made look intimidating by armour so they wouldn't be such an embarrassment
