I was under the impression that the basement was the religion and politics section. That is where the trolls go, isn't it? Because religion and politics are personal beliefs so people get very angry when discussing them. Besides, they only made that section in an attempt to tidy up the off-topic section.
Anyway, it's funnier if it's R&P because that actually exists, making it a clever inside joke. Otherwise it doesn't really make sense.

The basement? I suppose the thing was funny at some point, but now it's a terribly unfunny and overused joke. When you have people saying "Stay out of the basement!" when they themselves joined less than a month ago, you know that it's being overused.
Although I suppose it is far less annoying than the TV Tropes brigade. "OMG I hate you! You linked me to TVTropes! Now I'll be stuck there for hours because I'm retarded! Oh woe is me, you have shown this site that I am a complete waste of space upon this planet because I lack willpower and am too fucktarded to know how to close an internet browser!"

The basement is... the basement. The easiest way to get there is by being banned, although there are several other ways to get there (most involving occult chants and ludicrous amounts of LSD and acid). If you really want to get there with your account reputation/eternal soul intact, go to "The Scary Thread". It was the only thread to find it's way into the basement, and it offers a window into what the basement offers. Your mind will be scarred forever, however.Ahlycks said:

Halfway down the basement stairs was a terrible place to put the forum, as the super-concentrated troll aura in the area has had very adverse effects on all involved (see any large R&P thread for proof). Not only that, but all the chipping and digging gave the trolls an idea... they'd trip and dig themselves, into the R&P forum!
This is why random trolls come from nowhere and attack that forum.
MaxTheReaper still hasn't escaped, but the evil chittering and laughter still seeped from the basement, striking fear into the hearts of many.

In a terrible second, <link=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/profiles/view/Mcupobob>Mcupobob wrought terror upon the Escapist. The first post was innocent enough - Slender Man and a scary playground caterpillar - but it was followed immediately by Terrifying Smiledog.jpg and Squidward's Suicide, followed quickly by "The Face" creepypasta.gif and suicidemouse.avi.
Things went downhill from there.
The thread was quickly relegated to the basement, but still held ties to the Off-Topic portal, so you can still visit it. After the transfer, the troll laughs disappeared. We theorize that they currently cower on the other side of the basement, terrified of the Scary Thread.
And so there it is. As you travel down the stairs to the Religion and Politics, stop at the door and look into the void to your right. But if you stare into the abyss for long, it stares back at you...
