Currently popular culture is trying to decide how they want to use the word.

SWAGG double G usually, is an item or behavior that 'shows people who you are and what you're about' usually it's an article of expensive clothing. The end message is usually how cool someone is but it can differ. Typically it's based on context if someone IS swagg it's behavior that makes them cool if they HAVE swagg it can go either way.

Schwag with a sch is usually a stolen item or illegal drugs that are crap.

I know I'm a cop and had to have real life criminal/rapper/thug types explain it to me and since those are the types who usually start the trend I'm going with that definition.

Uh, one time I walked out of an exam, i happened to have one hand in my pocket and the other arm swinging, like arms usually do when walking, and a friend remarked on my swag, so...yeah.

EDIT: However I instinctively feel that you do not choose to be swag, swag chooses to be you.

They don't call him the Broswagonist for nothing, this scene was just way too awesome. This right here is the perfect example of Swag.

Did someone say swag?

And this ladies and gentleman is the furthest from swag you can get. This man has absolutely no swag and should never be considered to have swag in anything but his name :p

Everyone, stop right now. The fact that OP has to ask what swag is, means they will never have it. They will never be able to achieve it, they will never, never realize the power of swag.
And for anyone trying to explain swag to the OP? You also, if even ever having swag, now have no swag whatsoever.

It's the crap you get free at conventions, E3, preorders at gamestop but those are usually digital though.

It's colloquial language for having a cocky sense of self-assurance. When said un-ironically it should be met with scorn and derision.
Unless you are one of those few people who truely have Swag as pointed out above. The only two I can also think of are Bruce Campbell and Isaiah Mustafa.

Swag = Phat Lewt, Coinage, Booty, Treasure, etc.
Also, a type of window valance that only covers the top of the window and is used to hide drapery hangers and hardware.

The Flash clearly possesses copious quantities of swag, as evidenced by this clip. Everything prior to 1:15 can be skipped.
Conan the Barbarian, also possessed of much swag (Of both kinds even!)
*insert generic Conan image of choice here*

From the Urban dictionary:

Swag
apperance ,style ,or the way he or she presents them selves.

He got a killa swag

If you want a more proper meaning, look at MASTACHIEFPWN's post:

Noun:

Adjective:
Denoting a coat or jacket cut with a loose flare from the shoulders.

Synonyms:
verb. strut - brag - prance - peacock* - boast - swank - vaunt
noun. strut - swank
adjective. swell - stylish - chic - spruce

*I had no idea peacock was a verb, excuse me while I go laugh myself to tears.

Swag is essentially just how badass or cool something is. This can range from how funny something is to how awesome your kill was ETC.

For example this video proves what sawag is.

[small] Sawag is just my way of saying swag. [/small]

To me it means useless shit, promotional materials handed out at conventions or conferences. Usually manifests as carry bags you'd look like a tool using, buttons you're going throw away the nanosecond you get home and t-shirts that you're only going to wear when painting your house or mud wrestling. Sometimes you get pens though, I'll use the pens because I never seem to have one the few times I have to jot something down. I've never heard of it used any other way, unless it's a dialectical thing or it became an internet colloquialism while I wasn't looking.

It doesn't matter, you should never have to use the word "swag" anyway. Here are some alternatives:

Here you go, straight from urban dictionary.

Swag:
The way in which you carry yourself. Swag is made up of your overall confidence, style, and demeanor. Swag can also be expanded to be the reputation of your overall swagger. You gain swag, or "Swag up", by performing swag worthy actions that improve this perception. A person can also "swag down," by being an overall pussy and garnering negative swag for their actions. Swag is a subtle thing that many strive to gain but few actually attain. It is reserved for the most swagalicious of people. Swag can also be quantified, with point systems existing in some circles of friends.

This is basically what it means, this is the most common use of it anyway, others may mean something else when they use it but they are misrepresenting it. Swag really isn't something that should be overt or talked about and the type of people who constantly yell swag or talk about all their swag, usually have no swag. I can take the word or leave it, I don't love it or hate it and I usually only use it ironically or if someone has done something truly amazing as to make them worthy of this ridiculously played-up word.

It's basically good loot. In the real world, yeah, it's mostly used by hipsters from what I've seen.
