I have no definitive answer to that: It depends on genre, tastes, and preferences.
But since this is an opinion-topic...

Uh, I like too many games to pick any one out specifically.

Tough one.
So, here's a few:

Planescape: Torment (don't ask why, even I can see that it has lots of flaws, but I never ever got as immersed in a game as this one)

GTA: San Andreas (I don't think I ever played any game as much as this)

Red Alert 2 (for it is very, very awesome, the rest of the C&C series is cool too, but this stand out head and shoulders)

I guess there are others, but whatever. These are all-time favorites for me.

Dragon Age: Origins... Seen from a time spent standpoint and replayability taken into account, hands down... It is the only game I've played which has held my interest for 3 consecutive playthroughs, for that collosal a game... My other favorite would probably be Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory, or possibly Crysis (I have beaten Crysis' SP campaign 5 times, so yeah <.< )

Best Regards :)

FPS - Half-Life (first one)
FPS+RPG - SYSTEM SHOCK 2
RPG - Gothic 2
RTS - Age of Mythology (just felt epic...) / CnC Tiberium wars (nicely done)
3rd person shooter - MAX PAYNE 2
don't_stop_shooting - PAINKILLER (not series, first one )

For me, it was Final Fantasy X. It was the first Japanese game I played, and the first modern rpg. I guess it was modern at the time at least... Anyways, I have very fond memories of it.

I think I'll have to toss in another vote for Dragon Age Origins. Seriously, I still remember that feeling of apprehension and excitement as we charged into the final battle, or the queasy feeling as you faced various "damned if you do, damned if you don't" choices. Mass Effect 2 was more polished, and had better replay value thanks to the combat, but DAO is just one of those special moments in the evolution of games. Rank it up there with Civilization, Myst, Half Life, and Portal (I'd vote for the last as the best SP game ever except that the OP seemed to want hours spent on it as a criteria).

I think I'm gonna have to go for Mass Effect 2. I really got sucked into the story and came to care about some of the characters. I quite enjoyed it ;)

You know, I would never have thought of that on my own, but I think you are on to something. What a great game that was, especially in the context of the recently post matrix 1 era.

I also wanted to share my fav experience from the game. I was clearing out a diner and was about to head down stairs (and by head down stairs I mean a head first bulletime dive with dual berettas at the ready) when I noticed a grenade sitting on a counter next to a vent. I looked at the grenade, looked at the vent, looked at the grenade, did a few bulletime dives for the hell of it, then looked at the vent again. Seemed like a no brainer... pull the grenade, throw the pin down the vent shaft (or something), and then stroll down stairs and collect any guns and ammo that might have been left behind.

I wasn't even sure if there were any bad guys down there, but as soon as the grenade left my hands I was treated to a scene of my grenade rattling down the vent shaft in slow mo, landing at the feet of two chumps who had just enough time to yell out, in that deep stretched out slowmo voice, "ohhhh, ffff...." before they were thrown against the wall in a heap.

Completely and totally awesome.

I'd say Final Fantasy IX but it's secretly a 2 player game so that doesn't count.

So I choose Mass Effect 2. Commander Shepard is the man.

Wow... only 1 person so far has said Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time...
I really couldn't decide between that LoZ: A Link to the Past and LoZ: Majora's Mask,
It should also be noted that I haven't played Twilight Princess through lack of owning a Wii...

Anyway Reasons.

Ledged of Zelda games... just the usual, awesome adventures, great stories, item collection, puzzle solving and bosses that feel like... you feel like it's an achievement to beat them.

Variations between the three: Lttp actually felt bigger in terms of the world you were in. Oot had a slightly better and longer story, and being the first one into 3d was just so mind blowing to see what they could do. MM following OoT was always going to be difficult, but MM is just as good as OoT, the urgency of having a timer to complete events also doubled as punishment for not completing things in time and having to redo them again, it actually felt like you had failed, but the game world and the puzzles were just awesome.

I'll actually admit to something... the boss in MM Great Bay Temple gave me motion sickness and I threw up the first time I fought it.

N64: Ocarina of Time.
Wii: Zelda.
PC: Half-life 1&2, Rome Total War, Medieval 2 Total War.
PS3: Crysis 2, Dead Space 1&2, Fallout: New Vegas, Heavy Rain, Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Uncharted 2.

That's the short-list and I've probably forgotten many amazing games. If someone had a gun to my head.. on balance I think I'd say Uncharted 2, I wouldn't want to decide, but they have got a gun to my head..

Yeah, on consideration, this is definitely up there. Bullet time you say? Videogames, you had me at sprites in Doom, now you're allowing me to actually slow down the passage of time? I love you.

Portal wasn't bad.
But the prize goes to the first Halo for me. First time I really gotten this deep into the story, it made me buy the books, get the DVD, etc. For me, this game is what games should be, a strong single player and good multiplayer (I only got to play the multiplayer once on a LAN party, and trough XBconnect when that worked, but it's the only game who's singleplayer I replayed dozens of times)
Get KoToR ....SO good. I played that...oh man for months.
